I went to see the memorial that contains the heart of Fryderyk Chopin and I was not disappointed. Who came up with that concept?

We took a guided tour of Old Town in Warsaw and our guide told us the story about how Chopin wanted his heart to be in Warsaw after he passed away. So his sister carried it back from Paris in a brandy bottle.

Chopin's heart now rests in this church.

The Holy Cross Church is on the main road that leads to the Castle Square. It is very popular with wedding ceremonies and it is so very richly decorated - gold plated. The most interesting feature is found on one of the columns on the left hand side of the church. Here you can see a memorial where the heart of Chopin is layed down. Well, Chopin died in Paris and according to his wish, he asked that before he is buried, his heart is taken out (he was scared of being buried alive). When his sister arrived in Paris, she asked permission to take his heart with her to Poland. She then placed it in the Holy Cross Church. Something interesting about Chopin - look out for the benches that can play the music of Chopin when you press the button! You can find these in different places along the main road and in the square.

This church has a lot of charm - Jesus carrying the cross out front still has bullet holes from WW II .- and if you have seen THE PIANIST , it is shown in the opening scenes of the movie. Chopin's heart is something not to miss. And I have had the honor of sitting listening to an organ recital there - beautiful acoustics. Don't miss this when in Warsaw.

A beautiful church, very old baroque style. Masses on Sunday start hourly from 6am. I went to the 7am mass, and it was not crowded. Passed by later in the day it was very crowded, recommend you go early, though the organ did not play at the 7am Mass, maybe for the later Masses as they do back home.
