Owner description: Established in 1799-1806, this scenic and nostalgic cemetery features marble and sandstone tombstones called masebas, which reveal delicately carved symbols and ornaments, and the symbolic grave of the famous writer and teacher Janusz Korczak (1878-1942) who died in the gas chambers of Aushwitz.

This is well worth the visit and hours could be spent here wandering along different paths throughout. The further in you walk you will find gravestones that have fallen over, covered in moss and can be a bit spooky but also strangely peaceful. The paths further back are literally just paths worn by visitors so can be muddy and slippery. Closer to the front we noticed that some walkways had been donated and paved by family members in a extra memorial to their families. This cemetery is centuries old.

Jews of all backgrounds are buried in this large cemetery but the the spots that touched us the most were the mass grave and the monument to the Jewish children of the ghetto.

Nicely kept grounds of the old Cemetary.

We enjoyed an hour walking around and reflecting on the millions who died for our freedom

Such a moving experience walking through this magnificent cemetery, place of eternal rest for over 100,000 people of the Jewish faith. Hundreds of years of history can be found on the Tombstones, written in such beautiful Hebrew ordained in beautiful but traditional Jewish themes.
A must visit for Jews and Jews at heart.
