Metropol Hotel

We were in Warsaw on holidays and stayed for 4 days in Metropol Hotel. Location of the hotel is very central. The Central station is just 5 miniutes walk and 700 meters away. Metro and Tram line is opposite the hotel and very convenient. " PALACE OF CULTURE" which is the symbol of Warsaw City is just 400 meteres away from the hotel. Breakfast was so palatable and varied at the hotel. Staff at the reception is very amiable and supportive and fluent in English. Rooms are very clean and impeccable. Old Town and Lazienki Park are not far off. On the whole a very nice hotel to stay on most reasonable tariff. I along with my wife had a wonderful stay in the last week of June2011.

Room Tip: Get the room at 6th floor. Best view from there.

Clean and pleasant hotel in the city center. Staff is OK. Everywhere is close (in the end is the same city center - next to metro stations, trams and buses - if you like). Delicious breakfast - a large selection of dishes. Big queue for the dining table.
You can always attach to something ... (some noise from the street).

I stayed there one, being on a tight budget and unexpected business. Got the hotel cheaply and it was the reason for quick buy (prepaid 4 nights for ca. $150). The hotel is one of those post-communist relics you may still meet in C&E Europe - basically a totally depreciated asset being taken advantage off. NO AIR CONDITIONING, no sound insulation, no view to the outside world (huge ad covers the building), basic cleanliness (not dirty, so OK here), tiny beds and just OK basic bathroom. Door to my room were broken (lock) so all I had was just a handle chain lock from inside.
Either the hotel awaits major reconstruction (which would make it nice location good choice) and then wait until it undergoes one (adjacent Polonia hotel has the same owner is it is way way better) before paying more than $40 / night (seriously) or it is just set to be this way, in which case do not get fooled and overpay. It's OK for a very basic stay, but it's pretty much it.
One good thing is very decent breakfast, I must admit.

Location wise, its fantastic. Just 100 mts from Warsaw Centralna Railway Station, on the next cross-roads. But locating the hotel is a big problem as a huge advertising banner stands in front of the facade obliterating the hotel completely and the name is written on the other side in sich small letters that you would need binoculars/microscope to view it. Reception was welcoming, jobs done quickly, help is at hand.
The room is adequate compared to European standards (where even in 5stars there is not enough space to move about - God knows why, and European hotels are so skimpy when their ensuites are concerned - another reason for God to worry about. We Asians are not used to such things). Sheets, towels were replaced daily and rooms were cleaned up. Soaps were provided. Be careful about the bathtub as its very narrow and slippery. (I always prefer the bath cubicles to bathtubs as you can properly stand and have a bath. Wonder how many tourists use the bathtub as it is meant to be as most of them are in a hurry to have their breakfast and venture on to their sight-seeing trips which starts early in the morning). Each room is provided with an individual balcony and the view from there is simply fascinating.
The breakfast was simply fabulous and there was a good selection, even 6 types of coffees are provided. Well that's a luxury. I would go there again just to avail that fabulous breakfast instead of choosing branded hotels where the fares are the same and choice is little.
Coffee/tea making arrangements should be provided in the rooms. How much does it cost?

To begin with the hotel did not have our reservation registered despite the fact that our travel agenca submitted the confirmation. Maybe it wasn't the hotel's responsability, but the reaction of the reception clerk was the first dissapointment. No reaction, no words, no feedback, no apologies, just talking on the phone in Polish, ignoring eye contact, ignoring any question (like Is there any problem? Can we do something?). In the end, we got two rooms, since the hotel had enough vacancies. What was a mystery for me, was why not give us the rooms from the beginning and clarify the problem afterwards?? Plus we had to pay in advance which is completely unprofessional.
The second dissapointment - the bathroom. Old, stinky, not 100% clean. You just wanted to avoid spending much time in it.
The third dissapointment - the room itself. In case you wanted to sleep, you closed the window to avoid the noise, even if not 100% isolated. If you wanted to be able to breath (very hot and due to lack of air), you had to open the room and then you realised that you feel as if your bed is located within the crossing outside. No possibility to rest at all! NEVER AGAIN!
One small positive aspect the breakfast, except the coffee which was simply undrinkable. The final dissapointment after a sleepless night!

The Hotel is located in the center of the city, with easy bus access (one, direct) from the airport. The transportation available near the hotel includes subway, bus, trams, and close distance to the central train station. Due to its location, almost all major attractions are of walking distance. As are many restaurants, cafes, and supermarkets.

The front desk personnel was courteous. Knowing how long my stay would be, the hotel staff checked me in into a room facing the least noisy side of the busy intersection. The maintenance staff was considerate and kept the room clean every day.

The room was well-arranged and clean. It was a very cold winter, but, thankfully, inside the room it was always very warm. I even wished there was an individual thermostat.

In the hotel, there is a pleasant bar, which sometimes hosts live music. That's also where breakfast is served. The food is very good and varied.

Clean room and bathroom, attentive service at reception and breakfast - very varied. Quite specific (unpleasant) smell in the room, requiring frequent airing. On the plus very good location, good price.
