“Excellent stay”
Reviewed 24 June 2013

Just back from a three week trip around Europe that included many hotel stays but Pension Union or 'Union Hotel' was by far the most impressive. From the moment of our arrival we were greeted by a warm handshake and a 'so ye must be the Irish couple'. Tom the owner then proceeded to help with our luggage and personally show us to our room.

-A large room, plenty of storage, very clean. There is an elevator up to the room which is a godsend when travelling with heavy suitcases.

-Great location, just a short stroll down to the lake, probably better located than some of the bigger hotels like the 'Golf' that require a mountain hike to get up to it. A bank, shop, hairdresser and bakery onsite also.

-Great food, generous servings of food at breakfast that include eggs cooked to order, fruit, pastries, breads, ham and cheese. We had dinner there two nights also...the mushroom risotto was amazing....ordered it on two more occasions whilst in Italy and nothing tasted as good as the one I had in this hotel!

-Very personalized stay, the brothers provided a wealth of knowledge about the area and recommended the things to do/see and also the stuff that is a waste of time. They are genuinely interested in their guests and don't just see them as a number which we found in some of the larger hotels. To top it off they also offered to drive us to the train station at the end of our stay which was a nice touch. All in all we had a lovely stay and would have no hesitations in recommending it to other people visiting bled.

We stayed here for two night for a congress in Bled. The Hotel Union Bled is a perfect choice, you can find everything in the complex, good food, ATM, cafe, bar, beer, and local shot.
The two brothers were friendly and great hosts.
Pros:
- free wifi
- free parking
- great breakfast
- a bar for hanging out
- good food in the restaurant
Cons:
- a bit slow service in the restaurant when it is crowded

This family run B&B was perfect for our weekend stay in Bled, despite the weather putting a bit of a dampener on things. The brothers who manage were wonderful, we had a huge bag of laundry washed, dried and folded in one night for only 15 euros (quoted about 5 euros per sock at our accommodation in Piran!). When we inquired about what was on we were kindly given print outs of the agenda of the Bled festival, which we were lucky enough to be in town for. We were also able to park our car for free. One thing to keep in mind is the late check in which is 5pm. The apartment was dated but had everything we needed including a kitchen, tv, air conditioner and large bed which was all very clean and for a very low price. The noise at night from the main road did not bother us but I can see how it could for people who aren't used to it. It would have been good to have wifi in the room but it was available in the restaurant and bar for free. We enjoyed the breakfast with eggs made to order and delicious home made jam. The bar had cheap drinks and an outdoor area to relax in which we did while it was raining - when we weren't in town eating cream pie overlooking the lake that is. An easy walk down to the lake made it a great location and we would loved to have stayed longer in Bled at Hotel Union.

Many thanks to Lado and Tom for an excellent stay. I unexpectedly booked here just 2 nights before travelling to Bled as i had been let down by the Alp Penzion (see separate review). The service was fantastic, as was the food. The room was basically furnished but spacious. Having read others' reviews i specifically asked for the ensuite room, as i did not fancy going out into the corridor for the bathroom - i saw the doors to the two rooms where the door to the bathroom is and i think they are best used by one family.

Food indeed cooked on open fire, just what you need after a 2 hour walk along the Vintnar Gorge in the rain! Absolutely delicious. The steak was the best i have ever had. Rather unorthodox service in that for both breakfast and dinner, Tom (or is it Lado) will ask "What would you like?" but there is no menu! So when you ask what is there, he will say "Meat or fish?" And so eventually you find out what there is. For breakfast the question is the same but the only thing on offer seems to be scrambled eggs! Plus the usual continental breakfast which is already on the table. All lovely food but a menu would be helpful. There is a menu but this seems to be for visitors to the restaurant, not for the half board clients, although we were given it one night for the desserts. All rather quirky but food itself could not be faulted.

The Union is in a busy location on the corner of two major roads, but the traffic noise was not a problem with the windows closed. It is very near to the lake - 5 minutes - and the town (which is the most disappointing thing about Bled, just an unattractive 60s style concrete shopping centre). The lake is stunning and when the sun came out, glorious to walk around or take a boat out. Also very pretty at night. Castle worth a visit just for the views.

So i would highly recommend the Union as a reasonably priced, comfortable hotel with very friendly(if rather unusual!) service.

Room Tip: Ask for ensuite room rather than one with bathroom from corridor unless you are a family/party booki...

Pension Union was a lovely experience. We booked a 2 bed room apartment for us- 2 adults and 1 child (11 years) in late August. At 120€ per night for all of us, it was good value.
The location is on the main road leading to Lake Bled, only a block away. Driving in, we noted that there wasn’t a proper signboard indicating entry to the car park which is 50 meters before the hotel itself. There is no proper reception, so we parked in the private drive meant for the owners and had to search for some help. Finally we found an attendant who asked us to go back and park in the secured car-park and wait for the owner to arrive.
This is a family run place. Vlado arrived a few minutes later and checked us in to our beautiful 2 bed room duplex apartment on the second floor, which is however (unfortunately) furnished with cheap furniture. The large balcony which had a table with 4 arm-chairs, had a stunning view of the castle perched up high in the mountain.
Vlado and his family do all the chores here- they are the reception, the attendants, the cooks, the servers and the cleaners. We found it a bit strange to hear from him that cleaning the apartment, toilets and changing the towels would be done only on request!
The apartment had a living room, with the 2 bed-rooms above connected by a wooden staircase. The kitchenette was enclosed in a wooden cabinet and had a fridge, electric hot-plate and coffee-maker. The apartment had a TV, free internet wifi, leather sofa (4 seats), 2 desks and cupboards with lots of storage. It was very cool in Lake Bled when we reached (it had rained) but it must be noted that there’s no air-conditioning or room fan, if it gets warm. There’s no locker or room telephone either. There’s only one medium sized washroom and the only mirror is in here- there’s no other mirror in the apartment!
The breakfast was just superb, with hot eggs/ omelets, wonderful fresh baked bed, cold cuts, cheese, butter, fruits, hot tea/ coffee/ chocolate. The a la carte dinner was absolutely mind-blowing, cooked with such passion! In spite of the drawback we would love to stay here again.

Room Tip: If you sleep early, ask for a room away from the open dining area- else you may get disturbance from...

This was our cheapest stay during our 2 weeks in slovenia so we didnt expect luxury. The apt was basic adequate and clean. Lovely quiet location and much nicer than the big commercial looking hotels in bled. The brothers who run the place are very nice and the atmosphere is very relaxed. I thought there was only one and it was 2 days before i realised there was 2 of them.. They look very alike ..ha ha silly me. The restaurant i reckon is their main business with the rooms being an extra income. Proper order in my opinion because the food is suberb and well worth a visit to the restaurant if you stay in Bled. I would stay here again without hesitation

My famiily and I stayed at the Union Hotel in Bled in July of 2012. The room itself was very simple but definitely adequate for our needs. Suprisingly, the rooms were very quiet even though we were close to a street. The brothers who run the place were excellent hosts and very helpful. We also had dinner at the hotel one night. We personally loved the gnocchi. I'd stay there again.
