We have watched the Hotel Triglav being renovated during previous trips to Bled and when we decided to spend Christmas in Slovenia for 2013 it quickly became our first choice. Factors which influenced this were its location on the quiet side of the lake, and the reputed excellence of the dining, in case other places were closed for the holidays.
We booked a suite, plus a single room for our adult son for three nights over Christmas and even though arriving early the rooms were ready. Our suite was beautifully appointed and a good size, and our son was also given a nice room with balcony overlooking the lake.
The staff were, without exception friendly, helpful and polite and all spoke at least acceptable English- most of them perfect. Breakfasts were very good with eggs or pancakes available on request in addition to the buffet items. Coffee in the urn was so-so but proper espresso and cappuccino were also available on request.
The highlight for us was the dinner on Christmas night. The dishes were all excellent, and alternatives were offered for my non meat eating wife. Each of the five courses was small but exquisitely prepared and presented leaving us satisfied but not bloated. The wine recommendations were pricey but fitted the occasion and we were not disappointed. The waiter/sommelier gave a comprehensive account of all we ate and drank. We rounded it off with local desert wine and some of the home made pear schnapps which was excellent.
Although only using them once, the pool and sauna were well equipped with fantastic views of the lake from the pool.
Downsides? Well, the weather was awful, but we can't blame the hotel for that but we would have liked some seasonal snow rather than the incessant rain. A minor annoyance that has been mentioned before is the lack of a bracket for the over-bath shower head rendering showering and hair washing more difficult than it should be. Our son's double room had a much better walk-in shower cubicle. A more major issue is the poor sound proofing between rooms. Maybe a legacy of a historic building, but even so, we could hear every word and movement from the next-door rooms, from both of our rooms. Happily neither disturbed us into the night, but it would be a potential annoyance for anything but a short stay.
Would we/will we return? Without hesitation!
