“Perfect location anda beautiful hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 February 2009

We arrived when it was dark but becauase we had a lake view room the view across to the castle which was lit up was stunning. This is a beautiful hotel in a beautiful location. Its worth paying extra for the lake view room with a large balcony if you can. There were robes and slippers provided and the room had a sitting room aswell as a bedroom. It was always cosy and warm
The spa pool is worth having a dip in if you are brave as it is quite cold. But you feel invigorated when you get out.
Its not far around the lake and a trip up to the castle is worth it for the fantastic view over the lake.
The lake was frozen over when were there and there was still a fair bit of snow around .The town was quiet but that could have been because it was February.
Allin all we had a lovely four night here and would recommend it .

We have stayed in this hotel twice before and had a wonderful time.
So we thought this would be the perfect place for us to have our wedding? WRONG!!! OMG what a disaster the wedding day itself was fantastic ! married in the castle above the lake, with our family and friends around us.
everything was going great until we got to the hotel were we had organised the reception.
Thats when it all went wrong there were no signs in reception telling guests were to go! the staff didn't seem to want to help! very difficult all they did was complain about kids and guests wandering around?
So luckily for us the best man took matters into his own hands and organised drinks for the guests while he sorted out the meal.
They put us in the furthest away room in the hotel, there were no staff at hand for the reception to begin with he had to run around finding staff. the table settings were dyer, they overcharged for drinks, they even charged us for each piece of wedding cake that was cut? can you believe that... For those of you who are dreaming of a fantastic wedding in Bled... dont have your special day ruined by having your reception at hotel Toplice and watch out for the satff who like to talk behind your back because they think you wont understand them? (unfortunately for one waiter some of us foreigners do speak the lingo)
Oh we did get an apology and a free massage for one of us?

Me and my mother went to stay at this hotel for 10 days. We booked through Thomson. The first thing I must point out and agree with as the other reviews have said is that the view of the lake from the hotel is magnificant, and the location is excellent.

However, my mother paid extra for a larger room with a balcony - this was the decription that Thomson stated, yet when we got there it turned out that this room was actually only a standard room as there are a few 'corner rooms' which do not have a balcony. The standard sized room wasn't especially big for a 5 star hotel and the balcony was the smallest i've ever come across with no chairs or a table on it. The decor was also rather dated and drab. Admittedly we stayed at the front of the hotel so we didn't get the lake view from the room which I can imagine was beautiful but it was so much more expensive that we decided not to in the end. The beds were extremely comfy though despite the loud noise of the road outside.

The food was great, the breakfast buffet had a lot of choice and tasted good, however I felt it was more of a 4 star standard as the hot food wasn't very hot. Other 5 star hotels which I have stayed in have had someone constantly cooking the hot food where as in this hotel it was just under a warm pot. The 5 course evening meals were excellent quality though with a great choice and tasted lovely - once we'd found the restaurant that is! The hotel staff didn't tell us clearly where breakfast and dinner was served when we checked in and seeing as Thomson had said in the brochure that we were to have a 'free cake' (which aren't even worth mentioning - they are tiny molds of chocolate with a squirt of cream in the middle. This was very misleading as there are delicious cream cakes on display) which was in the Panorama restaurant at the end of the hotel we assumed this was also where the evening meal took place but it wasn't so for the first night and were charged with a bill of 53 euros even after saying to the waiter that we were half board before we started eating, I don't think she understood.

One day we wanted to go and visit Lake Bojhin via the bus, so we asked the receptionist what times the buses went and where the bus stop was. She wasn't very helpful and told us to go to the wrong bus stop so we waited for ages with a load of drunk locals standing at the bus stop, we finally decided to give up and as we were walking back we bumped into the Thomson rep and he told us where the correct bus station was! The hotel staff genrelly weren't very helpful and there was one man on reception who was very sarcastic towards us whenever we asked him anything.

All in all we did have a wonderful holiday, the hotel is a fantastic location right on the lake with lovely views, plus there is a good sized terrace to sit and admire the view, sunbathe and have a swim in the stunning lake. It may be worth going just for that, however it is expensive for the service we recieved and I did expect more from the hotel staff and rooms.

  • Liked — The location - right on the lake, the hotel spa was excellent too
  • Disliked — The hotel sevice and staff were sarcastic, and the fact that apart from me at the age of 19, the youngest person there seemed to be my mother at the age of 55 which makes everyone look down their nose at you.

We have just returned from a week in Lake Bled staying at the Toplice.
The hotel was wonderful in the best position on the lake and with the most style.
The food was excellent and half board is a must as the menu is extensive and varied. The staff are all very friendly and helpful keen to help you enjoy your stay.
The facilities within the hotel are very good although the indoor pool is colder than the lake.
A must is a balcony overlooking the lake you can spend hours people watching.
There is lots to do out and about, we only went on one organised trip and spent the rest of the time walking in the beautiful countryside.
Another must is the toboggan run it's great fun.
We are already planning another trip.

Have just returned from a week in the Grand Hotel Topice on a package trip booked through Thomson Lakes & Mountains.

We booked what was described by Thomson as "a small double with lake view". On arrival and allocation, it was indeed a fairly small room with an en-suite shower room and was actually at the front of the hotel on a quite busy main road, but did also have a side balcony with a side view of the lake. So although, not quite what we'd expected, we weren't disappointed. It was a little noisy on the balcony during the day, but we were hardly there during the day and with the windows closed and air con on, you couldn't hear a thing outside, so no complaints there. Room was adequately furnished, but had no tea making facilities, something I often forget is not standard supply in Europe. Room was always immaculately cleaned each day as well.

What really sells this hotel is its lakeside location and the other facilities outside of your room. The hotel itself has a wonderful bygone air of elegance and is beautifully kept, from the lounge with floor to ceiling windows looking out over the lake to the boat/decking area outside the hotel and indoor pool (very cold - but very refreshing - as it is water from the lake) and the spa. The dining rooms also had fabulous views. We were on a half board package and dined in the Grand Restaurant each evening. I have to say, for a half board package, I was very impressed. My experience on these types of holiday is normally fairly standard buffet or same choice of menu, but this restaurant really was wonderful. You had a different printed menu each evening, with a choice from the salad cart to start, followed by a choice of soup, then about 4-5 choices of main course and dessert. We really had some exceptional meals and did actually eat in the hotel all 7 nights, which we don't normally do on half-board as we tend to get fed up with the food half way through the week. The restaurant staff were also outstanding, very professional and courteous and nothing seemed too much trouble. Virtually everyone made an effort to dress up a little for dinner too, which was really nice, cause you don't get to do that much anymore.

After dinner a couple of nights, we went into the casual restaurant adjoining the hotel, The Panorama. They had a very good female singer on a couple of nights and then as a complete contrast a very bad male singer a couple of nights - I guess you can't have perfection all the time!! We also had a couple of light lunches in The Panorama and also partook in the complimentary afternoon tea/coffee/cake that hotel guests were entitled to each day - a lovely touch.

As far as location is concerned, the hotel is situated right on the lake side and opposite a small commercial shopping centre. Walks around the lake were lovely and you could take a little boat over to the church island, where you then had 30 minutes to look around. We also did some good Thomson trips - to the Postjana Caves & Lipica Stud Farm and a day in the Julian Alps - both very good days. We also walked to Vintgar Gorge - a naturally formed gorge in rocks, where a little wooden bridge has been built all the way around it - quite stunning. As a round walk from Bled, it was approx. 7-8 miles, but you can also get buses there.

So all in all, I cannot fault the Grand Hotel Toplice (pronounced "Toplichey", as we found out!). It is a wonderful hotel in a stunning location. They even excelled themselves on our last day when we had a 5am pick-up to return to the airport. On checking out, we were given a breakfast bag, containing a couple of sandwiches, juice, yoghurt and some fruit - I thought this was a really nice touch.

I would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a nice relaxing break in good quality surroundings. We certainly intend to return.

Friendly, comfortable, excellent service, and made for relaxing, the Hotel Toplice is in a beautiful location. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff; from arranging for the loan of a wheelchair while we were there, to providing us with a packed breakfast when we took an early morning flight to return. The reception staff were always smiling and friendly and ready with good advice about what to do and see.
We had a comfortable and spacious room with a balcony and a lake view. It cost a little bit more, but the view was wonderful. Each morning the sight of the castle across the lake greeted us, and to the left over turquoise waters we could see the island and its little church. The bed was so comfortable and the mattress could be adjusted to suit the firmness or softness you preferred. The selection at breakfast was excellent, a range of fruits and juices, wide choice of cold meats, cheese, as well as smoked salmon, and a good selection of hot dishes. This would fortify us to enjoy the sights, a quiet 6 Km walk around the lake, or a ride on the little train which travels along the road around the lake. There is a good choice of walks and activities. A toboggan run swoops down from the nearby Straza hill and a chair lift carries you up to the top. You could walk to the top, a satisfying walk at the end of which the reward of resting in a field bright with wild flowers and enjoying the view of the lake below with villages and mountains beyond. Pletna boats row groups to the island in the lake where you can explore the Church and ring the bell to bring good fortune. A half hour is allowed for the visit, which is quite enough time.
We were fortunate in being there for the festival over the last weekend of July. On the Friday night the fairy lights of floating candles lit the lake, a quite magical experience. Stalls selling crafts, foods, honey or wine lined the road in the Park, music stands catered for a range of tastes, games and activities were arranged for children. There was a fireworks display on Saturday night followed by a laser show projected on the cliffs below the castle. The castle is well preserved, quite small and simple, worth a visit even with the stiff climb up to it from the lake as well as the many steps once you enter the outside gate.
A choice of three saunas is available at the hotel, all free to guests, massage and beauty treatments are available on the lower floor. There is an indoor pool as well as an outdoor swimming pool and lake swimming area. The hotel has a most comfortable lounge with good views across the lake. Hotel Toplice is close to the main shopping area and a few minutes’ walk away from the park. There are a number of restaurants nearby, or you could enjoy delicious meals at the hotel. The ‘a la carte Restaurant Juliana is excellent, small, very much a personal service, with a wonderful selection of dishes, tables beside the window have views of the lake and castle. The Grand Restaurant was also of a very high standard. From a choice of three starters, to a choice of soups, and a varied selection of interesting and tasty main courses, the meals were all a delight, enhanced by the opportunity to enjoy the views seated outside on the terrace. The nearby Panorama restaurant however did not impress, service and meal was indifferent, to say the most.
