We have just returned from a weeks skiing with Thompson Holidays and had a great time. We were sadly somewhat disappointed with the hotel Alpina.
The hotel was nice and in a good location with great views if you are in a room at the front, although much was made of good access to the slopes which is not the case for beginner skiers, with large piles of snow to go over, and then ice it was at times very scary! Indoors everywhere was very clean and the staff helpful. There were two main concerns . The first being the food. At best you would describe it as canteen food. If you went to the restaurant late to avoid the children you had what was left and that meant an even more limited choice.
The other issue we had was with the sauna. We assumed that the use of the facility was included in the price, with charges for extras such as massages. Not so. They charge 14 euros per day per person, which we considered to be excessive.
You can however use the swimming pool at the sister hotel. It was great, but more than 10 minutes walk downhill in the snow.

Room Tip: The eaves room had a little window and felt a bit dark, but it was quiet.

Just back - When we arrived the snow was bitty and only on the slopes, it fortunately snowed over night and for the next four days putting down 3 feet or so. We had brilliant skiing. Back to the hotel- reception on arrival was easy and we were soon in our rooms - we were two families with 3 children between us. We had adjacent rooms one with a balcony which we used as a fridge! The rooms were very warm on arrival but turning the radiator down and opening the window for ten minutes solved that. The bath room was very clean and warm. THe ski lockers were a little cramped for three sets of gear and there was a 5 euro deposit on the key, which makes sense. The public toilets on the first floor were without doubt the cleanest i've ever been in. Food - breakfast continental if you wanted it, healthy stuff meuseli, yoghurt, dried fruit, fruit juices variously. Less healthy stuff, cheeses salami,s hams, bacon scrambled eggs, hard boiled eggs sausages fried tomatoes/ courgettes changed daily. Nice selection of breads and croissants. Dinner - two soups every night, fish available every night, turkey, beef, veal, pork all made appearances - i tried just about everything, a big range of salad foods. You'ld have to be a VERY conservative eater not to enjoy the food. Puddings were a bit alternative. The drinks were expensive but have you been to Courchevel? The staff were friendly, polite and a lot better linguists than the punters. We had three children 5,7 and8 and they had a lovely time, learnt some Slovenian with the waiting staff. The whole hotel was a comfortable and had a relaxed atmosphere. If you want more formal or posh go to the Larix at the bottom of the slope. With Crystal and Hit hotels you can go and swim in the Larix and the Kompass hotel pools for free. Slightly different protocols but both lovely clean facilities. The slopes close at 4 pm, they are then groomed and then in the evening they open again from 7 to 10pm, and 11 on Friday (I think it was). The flood lights were very good and the skiing was excellent. Ski school Bernica have a great bunch off staff Manja and Tjasca. managed to speak at least three languages in one lesson - enthuse the kids at the beginning of the week and made them want to go back the following day. At the end of the week they 30 instructors put on a snow party, dancing, ski display, silly games and then each intructor handed out certificates, medals and group photos (6euro) to each of the kids. Really well done and it made the week special for the children who came from no where to skiing blue runs confidently and not being totally scared at the top of a red. I liked the five minute walk in to town we went lunch shopping everday got to know some of the shopkeepers- and some (very little of the lingo) They did appreciate us making the effort, the odd Prosim and Hvalla went a long way.

After a two hour flight to Salzburg, then a three and a half hour transfer to here, we were ready to relax, ready for the skiing the next day.
First of all- the Inter sport hire shop in the town centre was by far the best quality hire gear we have ever had, and first class service.
The Hotel is on the slope so you can ski in and out, and has its own locker room for storage of skis & boots (5 Euro deposit returnable when you give the key back). its good you can ski straight onto the blue run on a morning and return directly to the hotel off piste, but the negative is the fact its a ten minute walk into town down a steep hill.
The reception staff were friendly, and there was a slight mistake by them in alocating us our triple room (i had confirmed a balcony request via e mail)- there was no balcony- so after a quick visit to reception, we were allocated another room.
Rooms were very hot, so adjust the radiators when you arrive!
Rooms were adequate and clean, and towels were changed daily if you left them on the floor of the shower (which was allways hot).
The television had satelite coverage so there were plenty of English programmes on tv should you wish to watch television.
The housemaids actually came into our room a couple of times when we were still in bed at 08.00am, but left quickly when they noticed us!
The hotel was clean and tidy, just a shame there were so many kids running around unsupervised (not British by the way!)- and I felt the British were the minority in the hotel when we were there.
Food- adequate continental breakfast, as you would expect- and Dinner was again adequate, if not catered especially for British- there was allways something to eat, and a daily soup and a small selection of deserts or fruit.
You can not take drinks into the resturant, you have to purchase them in there, and at 3.5 Euro for a beer and 2.20 euro for a small coke- it was not cheap!
Unfortunatley the resturant resembled a McDonalds at times due to the kids screaming and running around!
Staff were allways pleasent, and helpfull when needed- unfortunatley I didnt think this was the case in the town itself!
Poor games room, with only a pool table working (1 Euro a game)- and free wi fi in the bar area where most folk hung out on lap tops etc.
There is a free computer on the ground floor with internet access should you require access to e mail or snow forcasts etc!
Nice to ski in and out of hotel onto an easy blue (which is rather red at the top though!)-we were lucky enough to have huge amount of snow when we arrived, and some serious powder skiing and mogul bashing took place.
The ski area is small if you are experienced, and not as pisted as some other resorts- unless there are competitions on- saying that for us it was fine.
The so called ski beach area at the base of the slope lacks in atmosphere compared to some resorts, and is a meeting place for ski school with a few bars.
English (or British should i say) were in the minority in the hotel when we were there, and no one appeared to talk to each other!
To summarise- a nice hotel i have rated just as average compared to other ski hotels we have stayed in- saying that it appeared good for familys with small kids.
I would probably not return, as the limited ski area after such a long transfer puts other resorts in the frame, but overall the skiing made this a decent hotel to stay in.

Room Tip: Ask for a piste facing room with a balcony- e mail the hotel direct and take your responce from them with you to ensure you get the room you asked for.

    Stayed here forhristmas 2012:

    Positives:

    Food
    Good 3 * hotel
Great kids club and childcare - you can use this even when not staying at the hotel.

    Negatives:

    Rooms far too hot
No family or adjoining room for families with 3 children
Cot charge for 6 nights €42 (a joke!)

    Location:

Although it sounds great being 'ski in/ out' the hill to hotel was awkward and like a sheet of ice. Due to the nature of resort you are actually better staying at the bottom of the resort where there are plenty apartments and hotels nearer to lifts and ski hire etc.

Lorax is a very nice one!

Also if traveling with Thomson or crystal beware of booking all hire etc through them as it is actually cheaper to do it yourself also the card charges they warn you of are not true!

Excellent location, directly on the ski slope. Prices are moderate, you get real value for the money you pay. The place is clean, the staff are kind. Delicious food in the restaurant; the only problem I had was a lack of wireless in the rooms - wireless service is available only on the ground floor and in the bar on the first floor.

Room Tip: Not higher than second floor, because there's only one lift and it's for four persons max. so you'd often want just to use the stairs.
