Kranjska Gora is smaller than I thought, and the hotels are packed tightly along the open sides of the ski slope. The Hotel Vijolica looked smaller than it really is, and they have carved out a perfect location on the ski slope. Getting to the hotel requires a quick cursory drive through the town, or along the base of the ski slope. Listen to your GPS if you are driving! We pulled in to the hotel for a four night stay and were met by the manager and showed us which parking spot was ours. Each guest who drove had a covered parking spot for their car, nice. Not that you need to drive here, the hotel has a service to pick you up from the airport if necessary. They can even secure your ski or bicycle rental if you need it. From there we unpacked the car into our apartment, and ski equipment locker room. The locker room stays locked, with a room key, unlike many other hotels I’ve used. This was a nice feature being right on the ski slope. Getting to our room, I thought the hotel was warm and quaint. Once in the room, I realized they utilized the space very well. Our apartment had a master bedroom with closet space for the biggest clothes horse I know. We didn’t use a quarter of the space available, but we are NOT clothes horses! The kids had a day bed and a trundle in the living room, there was a kitchen table for four and a well-appointed kitchen. They even squeezed a dish washer in there! The windows are large and allowed great views of the Julian Alps surrounding us. The back door opened on to a nice patio that we would have used if it were spring or summer. The hallway at the entrance of the room had more spacious closets and a safe for our valuables. Everything seemed custom made for the hotel. The bathroom is still smaller, as is normal for European hotels, but not cramped. The only fault I would give the bathroom is the quantity of hot water and the speed of getting the tank hot again. Each room has its own hot water tank in the bathroom, so plan your usage if there are four of you! The other bad thing I would say is that the beds were very hard. Not that I cared, but it was mentioned by my fairer half. The pillows were awesome, I thought. One of the first things I noticed about our room was the smell. It smelled good. Not that typical hotel smell of disinfectant and fabric softener, but honestly clean and fresh. I’m not sure what it was, but it smelled fresh for our entire stay. We brought our own breakfast and lunch, so we could eat out at dinner and I have rated one of the local restaurants. The kitchen had everything we needed to make and enjoy our meals, very well thought out. To get on the ski slopes, just walk to the equipment room (with boot heaters), get your stuff on, and ski down the hill. We carried our skis 5 feet from the door, put them on and downhill skied to the first lift. If you put on your skis on the top side of the Hotel, you can ski down to one of the first four lifts. It is a great location. One of the ski runs is less than 20 feet from the hotel. One day, my kids and I skied from one of the farthest runs to the hotel in one run. Getting tickets, guides, school, or anything else is very easy as well. The hotel gets it for you. We paid through the front desk for our ski package. We did have to go to the ticket center at the base of the slopes to get the tickets (bring all your passports for photo ID), but we skied all the way to the ticket counter. We walked the entire town in less than an hour, and most walks to specific destinations took about 5 minutes. Park your car and forget about it until you leave. My last note, many people may fear skiing here because of medical emergencies, but trust me, the hospital that you would go to is great. Just have the hospital location in your GPS (in another town) or talk to the hotel about travel arraignments to the hospital if needed. Our medical emergency (badly broken arm) only cost 210 Euro at the emergency room, and the treatment was excellent (according to our Orthopedic surgeon).
