We stayed at the Tempfer Apartments in September 2013 and had a fantastic time.
We rely heavily on TripAdvisor or similar reviews, and were a little concerned before going, at the small number of reviews on here. Also if I'm honest, that many of them had been written by people as their only review. Cynical as I am, I prefer multiple reviewers and I like to see travellers' photos, so I have included some of mine.
However, this did look like the ideal place for us, so we booked it for just over two weeks, after some email communications with Borut, the owner.
He is friendly and professional, and we wish all owners were as helpful.
Also, we found it worth contacting him for a price directly.
Firstly, the apartment was absolutely spotless. It is newly furnished, modern, comfortable, and extremely well equipped. It was great to have a dishwasher. The bed comfy, shower powerful, wifi signal was excellent etc etc. Borut told us he was about to start repainting the place, but to be honest it looked fresh and newly done!
Towels and bedding are included, and changed regularly. Borut had supplied toilet rolls, dishwasher tablets, some washing up liquid, and most importantly a bottle of wine!
The views from the balconies were lovely, our views looked to the Austrian mountains.
The TV had Slovene satellite channels, often you could find a film in English with Slovene subtitles, which you could watch if you liked.
There are three decent Gostilnas (inns/pubs) in the village, within a 5 minute walk. Our favourite was Mojmir, but the other two were very good too.
The food is good; and cheap for the Eurozone. Salad is available in most places, for 3-4 Euros, it is a help yourself salad cart. The garlic soup is wonderful, we ate a lot of soup and goulash and loved it. The tapwater is safe, and tastes lovely. Slovenia is very eco-friendly, and you are encouraged to drink tapwater, instead of filling landfills with plastic bottles.
The walk to the Tromeja (Tri-border with Italy and Austria) starts in the village, about 300m from the apartment. Or you can drive to Arnoldstein in Austria to take a cable car up most of the way. The walk to Zelenci Pools is nice, and the Pools themselves (a tributary to the Danube) are beautiful.
We visited tons of places using this as our base, including: Venice, Salzburg, Ljubljana, Monte Lussari, Grossglockner Pass, Tromeja, Bovec (via the lovely Vrsic Pass - snowy one day we were there) Kobarid, Velika Planina, Postojna Caves, Predjama Castle, Zelenci Pools, Radovljica, Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj, Jasna Lake, Tarvisio, Mount Vogel, Vintgar Gorge, Kranjska Gora.....and more! A great base for some wonderful trips.
The Slovenes are friendly and welcoming, many are English-speaking but do try a little of their language - Doberdaan (hello) and Hvala (thank you) go a long way!
We absolutely would return to this area, and will certainly return to Tempfer apartments.
