Fluxus Hostel
Reviewed 7 March 2012

Fluxus Hostel has been a very nice place to stay. An old apartment converted into a Hostel with a double room and private shower/bath, a 6-bed and an 8-bed room. The hostel has a common room and kitchen which is to be used by all. The rooms are very lovingly decorated with a lot of attention to detail. The staff is very friendly (but not constantly there) and will stay late for late artivals. Check-out was easy and the whole deal was good value for money.

The only downside to this place is that the walls and doors are quite thin, you can hear most of what is going on. That is not a problem with few people, but I imagine it might become a bit noisy when it's fully booked.

None-the-less, the location of this place is fabulous! Only a few steps to the Nebotičnik-Tower where you can find excellent breakfast with a great view! Or party on the weekends.

Not far as well, the Triple Bridge, Old Town and all cafés along the river. Especially in the spring and early summer this is great as all Slovenians love to sit outside and have a coffee.

We enjoyed the time at Fluxus very much and would recommend it for friends to stay there when travelling on a budget (Ljubljana has very few moderately priced hotels as all are newly built and rangy withom four or five stars and a bit expensive).

I stayed here with 4 mates after attending a heavy metal festival in Slovenia. I was firstly quite surprised by the layout of the hostel. We had booked the 6 bed dorm - ensuite - but when we got there discovered we had to walk through the other dorm room to get to ours, and that our 'ensuite' was in fact the ONLY shower, so people from the other room ended up walking through OUR room to use it. As such we had no privacy at all and even had people clearly annoyed when we said the shower was being used by us, despite us paying for the 'ensuite' room.
Similarly we had to walk through the other dorm room to use the ONLY toilet in the place, located in reception, which I'm sure wouldn't have been great for our fellow guests.
Besides this I must say it's a lovely, well-presented hostel in a good location. The 6 bed dorm is quite huge, there is a lamp and wall socket near each bunk, towel and bedding are provided. There are no lockers which made me a little nervous. Reception staff weren't always there but were helpful when they were. Quite a nice place place if you don't mind lack of privacy & you are not worried about your valuables.

The hostel is clean and presentable and in a perfect location for exploring the city. I was travelling with a friend and as we had a lot of luggage and valuables, we wanted a room where we could lock everything away safely. We opted for the double room which is next to the kitchen. It has a shower which is connected to the dorms shower by a partition wall. The light switches are linked, so if someone switches the light on in the dorm shower it lights up the private shower which can be a litte annoying when you are trying to sleep. Reception hours are sporadic. We were woken up by people talking unreasonably loudly late at night - normal in a hostel - but when I went to ask them nicely to keep their voices down I discovered it was a couple of guests talking to a member of staff. Overall, a great place for a single traveller in a dorm - small and friendly - but not good value for a private room.

We stayed here for 5 nights over New Year in the 6 bed dorm room. In reality, the 8 bed dorm room and 6 bed dorm room are pretty much linked so it is like a 14 bed. As far as value goes, we paid 44 Euros each for a DORM bed on New Year which was a rip-off considered we couldn't get any sleep any nights of our stay thanks to the number of people coming and going. There was absolutely no privacy. There are also no lockers in the dorms.

The sole shower for the dorm rooms is connected to the 6-bed part which means that everyone walks through to shower. If everyone takes 10 minutes in the shower and you end up at the end of the queue, you could wait over 2 hours - if only everyone ONLY took 10 minutes.

There was only 1 toilet between 16 people as the "private room" didn't have a toilet either. This is totally inadequate.

We had an issue while we were there with a group of Italians kicking a ball around the rooms, being very noisy and even leaving pornographic images on the shared computer. We informed reception and they apologised to us. However, because reception hours are sporadic (at best) the only way they could contact the Italians was via a hand-written note which didn't solve anything. If hostels insist on allowing large groups who think they can take over the hostel then they need 24-hour reception to monitor them.

Apart from that, the hostel is generally clean and the staff were as helpful as circumstances allowed them to be. The location is great though.

We've stayed in about 30 hostels and this one is the WORST. There was no hot water, but when we complained, the owner insisted it was a small problem and refused to refund the 2nd night, even though we only stayed for 1 night. And he said hostels are for young people who should not mind the water heater breaking down, which was just a machine's problem. He clearly did not understand the concept of customer service. He even said many hostels in Europe don't provide hot water, which is completely ridiculous - this is year 2010, not 1910! And to make things worse, he made rude racial remarks against us, saying that there are worse hostels in China and we Chinese should know better.

So, fellow travelers, if you still want to book this hostel, make sure you're not Chinese, don't complain to the owner no matter what, and don't book the private room which doesn't have its own WC.

The only good thing about this hostel is Vanja the manager, who's very nice and hardworking. But I pity her for working under such an unreasonable man!

Fluxus hostel is a great choice if you want to stay a few days in the capital city of Slovenia. We chose the in-suite room for 2 people, which is colorful and tidy, although a bit small. We had a personal shower, but toilets are shared with the other people (there are two other rooms, for 6 and 8 people). Gentle personnel, central location. Definitely recommend it
