“Not your typical Euro Hotel.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 January 2013

The hotel is un-assuming, you really do not know you are at a hotel until you walk through the doors but once inside it is beautiful. Originally an old home it was renovated and turned into a hotel but even with the renovations, they kept much of the charm of the original structure. I believe all the rooms are suites and they are massive. Our room had at least 4 massive chandeliers, hard wood floors, 2 balconies, a fireplace and even a formal sitting room. The only down side to our room was the bathroom. The toilet was in it's own seperate room (which was nice) but don't sneeze or you will knock your self out on the sink. The shower was a new addition to the room and it was unusual, nice but unusual.

We did not take advantage of breakfast or meals in the hotel but I also didn't hear any complaints. The hotel is beautiful and charming, it is also in the old part of the city so cars are technically not allowed unless you have a pass to enter that part of the city. When we return to Ljubljana, we will be back.

From the time we stepped through the front door we felt welcomed and very comfortable. One of the staff members met us at the entrance to the old town where our taxi stopped to drop us off (the hotel is in a sealed part of the city). The rooms are huge, in fact more of an apartment feel than hotel. Our suite had a separate bedroom, lounge room, bathroom and kitchen/dining area - so much space.
The location of the hotel is fantastic - within walking distance to the charming shops, river, castle and other main attractions.
There is complimentary wifi available throughout and the tv has many English channels (very welcome after 3 weeks of traveling and only being able to watch CNN or BBC!)
We had breakfast at the hotel and found it reasonably priced (€10 each) - breakfast was not included in our package. The selection at breakfast was good, however not a cooked breakfast.
Overall this was a very pleasant place to stay and I would definitely stay here again when next we travel to Ljubljana. I will also be recommending this hotel to friends and family traveling to Ljubljana in the future.

First please know that the hotel area is located in a section of the city where cars need a code / card to enter. Basically gated. No worry we called the hotel and a person ran two blocks to the gate and let our car pass. This hotel appears to be a converted private residence. Our one bedroom suite was gigantic! I estimate the total footage at 1500+ including the two separate balconies - that said the bath was a bit small. The style was more Russian than Western Europe. There were at least 6 crystal chandeliers throughout the suite. I would happily stay here again!

The hotel is hidden behind a big wooden door, and that's part of its charm: when the door is opened you get your first glimpse into the wonderful world awaiting you . The staff are refreshingly friendly and warm and the rooms are very large and perfectly appointed. I especially enjoyed the vicinity to the music conservatory that allows you to experience a free "concert" from next door, and the spa, although I didnt use it ( this time) looked peaceful and relaxing. The location in the center couldnt be better, so I was just steps away from this glorious city center. The breakfast was no-hold-barred- fabulous. So, my verdict? Fantastika, as they say in Slovenian!

Room Tip: Rooms facing the courtyard are lovely

I was expecting more polish as this property is now a SLH member and has been written up in several well respected travel articles. We enjoyed our stay, but the hotel doesn't have the details down - ie. the only have 2 umbrellas (one broken) for their entire Hotel? They need better towels in the rooms & more towels in the spa, our kitchenette area in our suite was very basic and made the entire room feel cold. The staff was friendly and helpful, but they could have offered the drinks in the lobby when we arrived. All little things that add up. Make sure to get specific instructions on how to get to the hotel with the one-year-old car restrictions in the old-town area. The GPS in our new car didn't have all the changes in the now-pedestrian roads and you need a 'key pass' to drive up to the hotel. We liked the music coming into the room from the music school in the adjoining courtyard, but one morning the scales started playing at 7:45am.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for taking your time to review your experience of the Antiq Palace. We value your opinion greatly and will use your constructive remarks to further improve the level of our services. We would like to thank you for your kind appraisal of the friendliness of our staff as well as unique ambience of the Antiq Palace, which dates to early 16th century and enjoys a convenient and premium location in the heart of the Old Town centre of Ljubljana.

One of the unique aspects of the premium and central location of the Antiq Palace is its proximity to the neighbouring Music Academy, which not only gives the building a feeling of warmth but also is considered as an “attraction” by number of our guests, who enjoy the notes of the classical music echoing on the internal courtyards and the corridors of the Antiq Palace. We however understand that this is a pure matter of preference and, hence, for the guests, who prefer a quieter atmosphere Antiq Palace offers a number of suites which are situated either on the top floor or facing the Vegova street, which are exempt from the music sounds. We apologise sincerely for not being able to recognise your concern about this matter, which could have given us an opportunity to find a suitable and comfortable solution for your stay.

Please be advised that we have taken all of your remarks regarding the quality and stock of towels and convenience items such as umbrellas into consideration and have as well made several improvements to the quality of finishing, tiling as well as the water heating in the bathroom areas. Furthermore several improvements were made on the matter of regular maintenance checks as well as staff’s efficiency and prompt reaction to resolving any possible inconvenience caused due to a temporary maintenance malfunction.

We regret sincerely for not being able to recognise your dissatisfaction with certain aspects and details at the time of your stay at the Antiq Palace, which could have possibly given us an opportunity to turn your experience around. Should such opportunity become available to us we kindly ask you to contact us at a time convenient for you to discuss the ways in which we can make your next stay relaxing and enjoyable.

Yours sincerely,
Antiq Palace

This week we made our second trip in the past year to Antiq Palace in Ljubljana. We returned to the hotel because of its fantastic location and enormous apartment-style rooms (and because we found a great deal on a luxury travel discount website). Unfortunately, we found that the things we didn't like on our last trip haven't changed for the better. I've included a few pictures of the details of our room to contrast with the very well staged photos on their website.

The historic atmospherics make this place...but they are also its downfall. We stayed in room number two this time. The room has a dated kitchen/dining area, a small bedroom, and a sizable lounge that we used as the bedroom for our infant.

The doors from the lounge to the bedroom and the lounge to the kitchen/dining area didn't fully shut. Thus, the entire purpose of getting an apartment-style room (so as to put our infant to bed in quiet) was defeated as we had to keep the television off and tiptoe around.

The kitchen is very poorly equipped -- just a couple of plates, a few pairs of drinking glasses, and not much else. Not a dishtowel, soap for dishes, napkins or paper towel, etc.

But most disappointing was the maintenance of the room. The paint on the doors was peeling, windows were missing panes (on the secondary, outside set of windows that help block the sound from the next door music academy), the bathroom was in disrepair (dirty, worn away grouting; bathtub faucet handle broken; wastebasket broken; etc.), the cushions in the dining area were dirty, the towels were threadbare, and two of the bulbs were out in the dining room light fixture. When the hallway light fixture burned out, we asked that it be replaced and despite speaking with the front desk multiple times, they were unable to change the bulb in over 36 hours (they offered twice, but only when we were in the room and our child was sleeping). Likewise, we asked if they could provide dish soap and were told that they would purchase some the next day...we never saw it. The coffee and tea items were not replenished during our three day stay.

On the previous trip, we stayed in room 12. It has been more recently renovated, so had fewer problems, but we were still surprised by some basics...for example, one of the metal cords on the modern design stairway was broken and in lieu of fixing it, they had just tied it off. The kitchen was also not well equipped.

The staff seemed nice (especially the young woman at the coffee bar in the mornings), but were not overly friendly or helpful (and when we first came in, the guy at the reception desk did not stand to help us with the door despite struggling with two large bags, a stroller, etc.).

As I said at the top, the location and the historic atmospherics in this hotel are fabulous, and the rooms are very big. The staff largely seems to be trying. But for those looking for luxury service and details, this place falls short. It is a real pity, because antiq palace could be a remarkable gem in Ljubljana. We will try another place on our next trip.

Room Tip: Street noise can be an issue, so higher up is better. Room 12 was far superior to Room 2.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for taking time to review your recent stay at the Antiq Palace. We value your opinion greatly and were grateful to receive both constructive remarks as well as your kind compliments.

We sincerely regret to heat that upon your return visit the suite allocated for your stay failed to meet your expectations in contrast to your first stay at the Antiq Palace. We constantly strive to improve our service and have not taken your remarks and recommendations lightly. We are pleased to inform you that the maintenance faults identified in the suites II and XII have been resolved promptly and we have placed a lot of emphasis on ensuring that the regular maintenance checks are performed in all suites on a daily basis as well as improving the efficiency of our staff in handling guest requests and complaints. Unfortunately, some of the interior features of the suites such as the original wood doors in our historic suites, cannot be replaced in light of their value to the property. However, we strive to ensure that the regular and careful technical improvements are made to the main attributes of our unique ambience.

We are sincerely to have not been able to recognise your disappointment at the time of your stay and act promptly to resolve the maintenance issues mentioned and ensure that your stay runs smoothly. Nonetheless, we sincerely hope, that such opportunity will become available to us in the near future and would like to kindly ask you to contact us at your convenience to discuss the ways in which we can make your next stay at the Antiq Palace more relaxing and satisfactory.

Yours sincerely,
Antiq Palace
