Best Western Premier Hotel Slon
Ranked #8 of 31 Hotels in Ljubljana
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 24 April 2011

I can't fault this hotel, it's location was perfect for accessing all parts of the city. The rooms were excellent, and very comfortable. Breakfast was impressive, even by Best Western Standards - it had the best selection of food I have ever seen.
The WiFi worked brilliantly in the room and the public areas. the coffe shop was a nice place to go after dinner to have some cake!
The only potentialy fly in the ointment is the location of a popular ljubljana night spot on the opposite side of the road. This leads to some cosniderable noise if you are located on the front of the building, and on the Saturday night it went on until 5 am. you seem to get a break on Sunday and Monday but Tuesday night it started up again. the hotel does provide ear plugs, and i am a very light sleeper, but even this couldn't detract from one of the best stays I have had in a hotel.

Ljubljana itself is a beautiful place which more than exceeded my expectations, everyone is friendly, speaks impeccable English and there are lots of wifi hotspots across the city, so I didn't have to pay to connect once.

Food is good value for money, and as a female solo traveller I felt very safe being out at night.

As usual with star ratings in Europe, this hotel is really a 3-star by US standards, which isn't a bad thing. My room was large by European standards and had all the latest amenites including satellite flat-screen tv, pillow menu and complimentary Wi-Fi. Yes, the hotel was rebuilt in the 1930's to some will look dated, but it is not "worn", but rather is of a retro style. It is right around the corner from the main square and trip-bridge. Breakfast was included in the room rate, and it was one of the better breakfast buffets I have had - you'd be hard pressed to come up with something they didn't have (well, ok, no black pudding). In general, this is a good value for money compared to other capital cities in Europe.

We stayed at Premier Hotel Slon for 3 nights over the New Year period. The hotel is a good standard, comfortable, clean and perfect for a city break. During the New Year, this hotel is amazing as you're only round the corner from one of the main squares, the three bridges, the riverside bars and restaurants and it was easy to find a good spot to watch the fireworks.

Note that if you are hiring a car, this hotel charges for parking. What we did instead was to hire the car for a day from Sixt who is only a short walk away and drop the car off before walking back to the hotel. We when hired the car again from them when we left Ljubljana and drove to other parts of the country.

This is probably one of the better best westerns I have stayed in but as a chain hotel in a relatively old building, don't expect anything special. I would say however that we also stayed at another hotel for one night (Central hotel) who also claims to be a 4 star but is actually barely a 3 star (and not even as clean as Premier Inn/Travelodge in UK) and in comparison, this hotel was heaven!

I was on a trip with a very small tour group (8 people), but still traveling as a single. The room was a "room for 1," cozy, yet comfortable. I did not like the contortion I had to do to get into the shower, which had a curved door that slid around with virtually no space between the toilet and the entrance to the shower. The light by the bed was not very bright, but after touring all day, I was too exhausted to do any light reading before bedtime. There is a TV and small refrig in the room (loaded with beverages and candy, and no room to put in leftovers from a meal). The TV just repeats over and over and over the international European news; and even BBC repeats a lot of news (as in repeating news stories several times a day for an entire week, all over the Balkans). There are radio stations that you can get through the TV, and they are great. The fitness center gives you some great views, but is miniscule.

Try to get a room away from the side street that leads down to the square. People were up until all hours, and you could hear them. The breakfast buffet was great, although no variety to speak of (ate there for 3 mornings). Loved the loose tea, though--individual pots with their own infuser, and a small choice of loose teas. They had the coffee machines with choices of cappuccino, latte, hot chocolate, etc. You served yourself. I grabbed a couple of fresh fruits (apple, tangerine) each day as snacks.

There are 2 computers in the lobby area for those wanting to check their email. There is a wonderful pastry/coffee cafe just off the main lobby, owned by the hotel, and a regular restaurant on the other end. This is primarily a hotel for business travelers, but certainly accommodating for tourists. It is a block and a half to the main square. The hotel's central location is great. The walk to the main bus station takes about 15-20 min.

Only major complaint is my cups and glasses were not replaced daily.

Spent one night there in Dec 2010, on a business trip.
The location is fine, everything within a walking distance. The hotel organises reasonable priced airport transfers.
Staff was ok, breakfast good.
The rooms are quite small, but clean.
It is good for a short-term stay, for a longer one I would definitely choose something with larger rooms.

The location of the Hotel Slon is perfect, 30 seconds from the main town square and in the heart of the shopping district. Ljubljana is so small that it would be difficult to get a hotel in a bad location, but the Slon is really perfectly situated.

The hotel is something of an institution in the city, but has by all accounts had something of a makeover in recent years. Bathrooms are modern, tvs are small flat screens, in fact the whole place has a pleasant modern feel.

There is a branch of one of the cities top tea shops based in the foyer of the hotel, and there is even a "nightclub" in the basement which i found out after my trip may have been worth a visit after all.

Breakfast is certainly worth taking - it is a copious buffet option, which without offering real honeycomb or smoked salmon allows you to get a very decent morning feed and plenty of both healthy and unhealthy choices. The floor where the breakfast was served smelt very Eastern European however - that funny smell of disinfectant and boiled cabbage which is so hard to shift. in itself it is not unpleasant, but it stood out a little .

The hotel gym is as small as it looks on the website : if you look closely you can see that the photographer is trying to be clever with his angles. You can however manage a half decent workout if you get the space to yourself (if they have fixed the multigym which was not functioning when i visited)

Worth mentioning is their shuttle service to the airport - it is a couple of Euro more expensive than the same service which stops at a bus stop 100 metres away, but for the convenience of the service i would recommend it.

All in all a very safe choice - not the cheapest in town, but nothing to disappoint and Free wifi.

This was a great hotel. Clean and tidy, great rooms, comfortable beds, good location, great breakfast buffet and also a good restaurant (quite expensive) at the bottom.

We really liked it and would truly recommend it to others going to Ljubljana.
