“Don't see what all the fuss is about...”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

Me and my friend were interrailing around europe for a month, and booked all our accom. before we left. Slovenia was towards the end of our trip and we had bumped into lots of people on our way who had already been and had absolutely raved about this hostel to us (as did the reviews online, hence why we booked it). Granted, we only stayed for 2 nights, but I honestly don't see what the hype is about this hostel.
The staff were really lovely and really helpful, the all you can eat breakfast (always a winner when you're on a budget) for a relatively cheap price was great and the location relative to the train station was perfect (although the directions we got from the hostel were not the most helpful).
But apart from that, there was nothing special about it unfortunately, and it was one of the worse hostels we stayed in during the month. We stayed in a 12 bed mixed dorm, which we were totally used to by this point in the trip. But, we got to our room and it was basically like 12 mattresses on the floor. There were supposed to be 2 showers and 2 toilets for the room, but one was 'out of order' (looked like it had been for a while and nothing had been done about it to be honest) and so we were sharing a shower, toilet and sink between 12 people... putting it simply: it was disgusting. There was a distinct smell of uncleanliness and damp to the bathroom (to the point I actually couldn't use it). Turns out (found out on the morning we left) that there were much cleaner communal bathrooms downstairs that we could've been using the whole time but, despite the fact that one bathroom was out of order, there was no advertising of this. The room itself was horrifically dusty and unclean. Also, the 'lockers' they provide are only big enough to fit a small bag, rather than being able to put your whole bag in for safety (which is the norm in hostels). The atmosphere in the bar area was non existent... thankfully we could sit and watch the world cup in the evenings but I genuinely don't know what we would've done if that wasn't on. The food served was overpriced for the portion size given. There was no kitchen, so we couldn't even cook our own meals. There was only WIFI on the ground floow, so didn't have it in the rooms (also a norm for the other hostels we stayed in) Maybe you would have a completely different experience if you were staying in one of the private 'cells', but personally, we just couldn't understand why everyone raved about it so much.
It's such a shame, because this hostel was one of the ones we were most excited about staying in. Maybe we just caught it on a bad couple of days.
The one saving grace about this place was the staff, they were really really nice and helpful.

Room Tip: Maybe the more expensive private 'cell' rooms would be better.

I stayed at Celica for 6 nights this month (june 2014) after a friend of mine who is from Ljubliana recommended it to me. The place is awesome and full of character. Everyone that I met in the staff was super nice and always willing to help out. The bar staff were also great and always pretty nice as well. I wish was there to watch the world cup from :) There are great places around it and is a quick 10min walk to the center. Ursa thanks so much for all your help & can't wait to come back :) (Marcelo - Brasil)

Converted from the jail of the former communist army and situated in the graffiti-covered art ghetto/student party zone compound, this hostel is one of the coolest I've stayed in with lots of nice touches like stair railings made of driftwood and a beautiful Indian-inspired sitting area. In addition, the staff were helpful, breakfast is a great value, and there were lots of goings-on while I was there, such as a great free folk concert in the common area.
Which brings me to the downside--at least if you're looking for peace and quiet. This place is LOUD--not only was there partying on my floor, but music & laughter drifted in the window until late. (Luckily, I'm a heavy sleeper). Also, the rooms are short on storage space and two people in my four-person room had NOWHERE to put their stuff. No lockers, just the floor next to their bunk bed. (Which is more than the Tito-era guests enjoyed, I suppose!)

We were a group of six men on motorbikes and had found the address on the internet. The place looked interesting and we booked three nights. Well, the rooms are a sight! The artists who designed them did an amazing job. But the cells are really cells - meaning there is almost no room in them. It was ok for us, as we were on the road most of the time. Just don't expect any comfort.
What we loved was the spectacular scene around the house - an area designed by very creative artists, very colorful indeed.

Clean and well located hostel - room is a cell with a raised double bed under which you walk around and store clothes etc - can be noisey early on but seems to be okay after midnight

Bathroom down hallway and these had good water pressure and were clean

Old town area less than a 10 minute walk away

Staff were very friendly and helpful

Free and good Wifi in public areas

Had a great stay with friends at hostel Celica. Friendly staff, cosy rooms, decent and cheap food, good location (15 minutes walk from centre/ 10 from train station). A really funky hostel; from the artwork and graffiti all over the grounds to the quirky rooms to the traditional band that were playing in the garden one day, everything was very creative and fun. Only downside is that there are no lockers in the rooms (if you are sharing with other travellers would recommend handing valuables in at the reception desk which they offer for you to do upon arrival).

Cool place to stay. Lots of parties on the same block. The rooms are small, as it is a former prison. All the rooms are decorated by different artists. There is a tour of the rooms each day à 14h, so even if you do not want to stay in a hostel, you have a possibility to visit this unique place.

Room Tip: Each room is unique, decorated by different artists. Most rooms have 2 beds, but sometimes you have...
