“Great stay over Christmas and NYE”
Reviewed 19 June 2013

We were upgraded from the Grand Union hotel’s sister upon arrival in Ljubljana and what a pleasant upgrade it was.

The Grand Union is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in!!
The service and bell boy at reception were very keen to help in broken English and a real asset to the hotel.

Our room was easy to find and clean. It was also quite large (compared to normal hotel rooms in my experience!). The tv was also huge as was the bathroom and walk in shower.
The hotel provided breakfast at no additional cost and although we only made it for 3 of our 6 mornings (opting to have a lay in) it as plentiful. Cooked breakfast, cereals, fruit , fresh meats, cheeses and pastries. There was nothing amiss.
The location of the hotel is superb, literally a 5min stroll to the famous 3 bridges in the centre of the City.

Of the other facilities within in the hotel all we used was the pay per view films (lazy morning!) and I also had a massage in the spa room next to the pool whilst my boyfriend did some lengths. The massage was good although quite a bit was lost in translation except taking payment.

Other things to note of Ljubljana:
- I would recommend the free site seeing tours run for free. Info online or from the tourist office
- Take the public bus to Lake Bled. It is amazing. We went Boxing Day and had a lovely stroll round the lake. I would imagine it is thriving in the summer.
- Lock a padlock on ‘lovers bridge’ – you will find it
- Try the Cutty Sark pub for food and drinks.. cheap and a good pub to spend the evening

Maybe we were lucky but booked and paid £77 for a room here and we were in for a great surprise. Centrally located, next to the triple bridge. We were shown to a large room with 2 double beds (we had booked twin). We were not here long so didn't have a meal other than the excellent breakfast or use the pool. The staff parked our car (no need to pre book) At 17 E per day. The room was cool and luxurious

Perfect location, just a 1 min walk from the old city center and the triple bridge. From the outside the hotel in art nouveau style still displays some prestige. That's for the good side! But once you adventure yourself into the hotel, another picture offers to you. Once passed the entrance hall, you quickly get the impression that the whole would need a serious facelift.
Be careful about the room you chose, we first got a very tiny room (no 624) with a bed that is at best suited for a hostel, but not for such a 4* hotel! The mattress was narrow and when lying on it you could touch the floor underneath! Quite shocking considering the price they ask for this! We complained and got offered a bigger room with at least a correct bed, but a window that was not closing properly... Anyway this was repaired by the staff, which (this is another positive point) are very friendly and helpful.
The swimming pool area on the 9th floor is correct. The pool has a decent size (water temperature at 28deg C), the 3 saunas are working at the right temperature. But same remark than for the rooms, the whole area has come into age!
Breakfast is one of the positive points: huge choice, there is something for every taste. But nothing outstanding if you're are looking for an unforgettable experience. This is a very big conference-style hotel, not a boutique hotel. Breakfast is in line with this.
Overall, this hotel is overpriced for what they offer. Refurbish the whole hotel and you could get the true number 1 address of the city. But for now there are for sure much better options in the old city with a fair price.

Room Tip: Avoid some of the rooms (like no 624) that are not at the level of a 4* hotel

Stay here for the location. A stones throw to the centre of town. Room 312 was large, had a balcony, no view to speak of however except a church steeple and office block - but it was quiet - apart from the muffled church bells. Not the most modern of rooms but clean and more than acceptable. Room service was efficient and all staff very helpful. Breakfast was the usual buffet, good range, scrambled eggs however were rock like. Breakfast room fairly unspectacular in design but functional. Didn't try the gym but if you want to run, turn left out of the hotel and head to the Tivoli gardens - 5 minutes away- a fantastic and very large park and woods. Would recommend this hotel if staying in the town.

Arriving by car, this hotel is a bit difficult to find, but the reception was excellent. Perfect location. Our executive room was large with high ceilings and nicely decorated. Breakfast dining area, which also serves guests from their adjacent business hotel, was routine and very busy.

Room Tip: Executive room a must

We stayed two nights just B&B, we eat elsewhere.
On arrival we were offered a choice of two rooms, one was a small suite with cooking facilities on fourth floor. The other a conventional large double on first floor. Both were typical of international hotels, lots of cherry wood in this case with large beds and sparkling bathroom.
The breakfast was excellent, even sparkling wine was on offer.

Room Tip: The room without cooking facilities had more style and is preferable if you do not cook.

You can't find a better location in Ljubljana than Hotel Grand Union Executive. I love art nouveau, and this hotel is full of it. So lovely. The first room assigned to us turned out to be a single so they moved us next door which turned out to be basically almost an apartment, and a large one at that. We had a separate living room/kitchenette/dining area/office all in one very large room with a half bath attached, plus a large bedroom with excellent closet & drawer space and a large bathroom with a shower as we had requested. It was an amazing space and so comfortable.
The staff at this hotel were probably some of the friendliest we've ever encountered. Our car was taken to the garage for us and our luggage delivered almost in the blink of an eye.
The breakfast room here is amazing. Very large and elegant, and offering just about anything one could ask for, even sparkling wine!! I've never seen a spread for breakfast like this anywhere. It made a great start to the day. If in Ljubljana again, we will certainly stay here every time!
