But if you enjoy the unexpected and can adjust quickly, then this could be an interesting stay. The owner, Franc, is an intelligent, retired business man with an "old salt" personality suited to the experienced (35,000 sea miles) sailor and ski instructor which he is. He might show you a picture of his sailboat in the Antarctic. The old villa, located in a dead-end street just below Pyramid Hill, 5 minute walk from the city park, is being renovated, so the quality varies from a luxury apartment to small rooms without a wardrobe. The lady serving breakfast was extremely helpful and tried to fulfill all our wishes. Franc is a gourmet, so ask him for recommendations for good restaurants, several of which are within 10-15 minutes walk.

Room Tip: For longer stays, ask for a room with closet space.

Vila Maria is not in the center of Maribor but with map or gps it is not a big problem to find it. The owner Mr. Frank was very helpful and welcomed us even we arrived around midnight. Room was small but considering that we only slept there it made no difference. Vila is in the posh neighborhood surrounded with Vineyards so it has a special atmosphere.
From our window we could see ski tracks and mountains.
It takes 10 minutes to get to the center and there is parking in front of the house.
Would recommend for sort stays.

My writing must start with a compliment to Tripadvisor for the possibility of the exchange of views. My wife and I have two favorite travel destinations. Gambia in Africa where we have a self help set-up for the Gambian people. The other one is the Balkan, especially Croatia and Slovenia. On a number of occasions we have followed the advice of an acquaintance going over there quite often. His recommendation of Maribor and Vila Mira sounded right, comments by Lucyjunior left no room for doubt. Thanks, we had a fantastic 3 days at Vila Mira. Just one tiny complaint, no BBQ. Mr Frank said he will try for that next time. BBQ or not, we would love to return to this place and will keep a watch on our savings.

Terribly out of the way 'hotel' which was poorly furnished. Its' best suite did not even have a wardrobe for our clothes. All we had was a screen and hangers. It must have been very untastefully furnished somewhere in the 1930's. We had to go to our room from stairs which were outside. We were meant to stay for ten days and left after one night. The owner (Frank) did nothing to help as he went sailing the next day and we never saw him again. The only time we saw him was on the night of our arrival when he tried to persuade us that we would soon get used to the surroundings. Needless to say, we fled the following morning to a comfortable, central , modern four star hotel.

We worked out the way to Vila Mira as it is marked on tourist maps at the station. It was an easy walk with our suitcases, though a short uphill at the end, so don't bother with a taxi unless you have mobility issues.
Mr Frank the owner, was a delightful host - greeting us with an Australian flag when we knocked on the door. He also advised on a good place to eat and to find coffee - which proved up to his recommendations. As for wine-tasting...he knows this region well.
Our room was very clean, airy and pleasantly redecorated. The bed was typical as in many hotels in being a joined couple of mattresses, but it was comfortable and we did not fall through the gap.
Vila Mira is almost the last house in a small street so beautifully quiet for a good night's sleep - picturesque too with vineyards rising up the hill behind.
Breakfast was served by a nice lady who cooks your eggs as you wish - I enjoyed her omelet. There was also a choice of cereals, various breads and toppings, yoghurt etc.
The dining area beside the garden is graced with a walnut tree and a friendly setting for meeting other guests.
We ended up with miserable weather and thought our last night in Maribor was to be a washout - but hadn't reckoned on the hospitality of Mr Frank, who cheered us with an impromptu BBQ. He is the icing on the cake of Maribor.

Slovenia will amaze most Western Europeans like myself. Beautiful countryside and friendly old style agricultural atmosphere, yet efficiency superior to that of my home country. Paradise indeed.
Maribor must rank as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.
We booked at Vila Mira for 2 days but stayed a week. Owner Mr Zorko (he may soon ask you to call him Frank) adds to the magic of your story. You find a photo of him and Bernie Ecclestone in the common room. Vila Mira is only 500 m from the city centre with free parking, 300 m from the Railway station. For us busy Europeans, a piece of heaven just next door.

We stayed just one night in Maribor, we should have stayed two. Vila Mira
(the single 'l' is deliberate) was a perfect choice, a quiet place of charcacter situated on the edge of Maribor just beneath the vineyards, yet within easy walking distance of the centre. our room was very genoursly appointed and it was not the hotel's fault that there was a power cut in the morning so the shower could not be tested. Frank Zorko, the owner gave us a very warm welcome and recommended an excellent resturant, 'The Anchor'. Maribor is a very underated city. Although not as large and bustling as Ljubljana, it is nevertheless very attractive and well worth a visit.
