Excellent rooms, very friendly staff, unseen high quality in Slovenia, and very rural and rustic environment, close to Portoroz. When you sit outside for breakfast or evening dinner (optional if you alert the owner in advance), you are actually sitting under the vineyard ranks and with a nice view on the nearby salt fields. Top pick!

We decided to stay here because we wanted a good location for doing lots of day-tripping. We were there for almost a week and traveled all over Istria, over to the famous caves of Slovenia, up the coastline north of Piran and into Piran for dinner and browsing around many times. I must say that this is definitely more like staying at an agriturismo than a regular B&B and is priced accordingly. Darko is very friendly and speaks excellent English, but many times we returned to the house and did not see anyone around -- so it can be a problem if you need something and there is no one to ask for a whole day. The rooms are very simply furnished with left-over pieces – nothing fancy – just utilitarian. We went with Room 4 because of the balcony, but Room 3 also has a nice balcony, so we'd recommend either. They both face the road, but we did not have street noise issues, and if you're in the back, you won't have the beautiful views of sunset over the salt pans. Noise issues will happen if there are other people downstairs; there doesn't seem to be much insulation between floors and rooms.

We had dinner there our first night and Darko is an excellent chef – everything was delicious – freshly caught fish, freshly picked greens for salad, fresh cherries in a tart. Breakfast was a little bit of a problem because the helper speaks only Slovenian. The first two days it was just bread and toast – yes the cherry jam was wonderful, but we prefer not to eat bread and more bread – and the fruit was rather old. Finally we saw Darko and asked for some yogurt and the breakfasts improved. I do not think they have the experience of serving many international travelers with different breakfast expectations but if you can find someone to ask, then your requests will be met. One other negative is that we were not able to use the bikes – they were not in good shape at all and one had a totally deteriorated seat! But all in all, we had a nice stay and if you do not want to be in downtown Piran, then this is a very nice alternative.

We recently spent a night at Casa del Sal and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The house itself is lovely and beautifully decorated. We were served a fantastic beautifully presented breakfast - including several types of homemade jam, fresh fruit, homemade cherry cake as well as the usual ham and, cheese - out on the terrace, with a great view of the salt flats. Our hosts were very friendly and welcoming.
They were helpful in every way, including sending on our passports that we had forgotten by mail. We visited Piran in the afternoon but were glad to get away from the hustle and bustle there after a while and enjoy the sundown from our balcony at Casa del Sal, followed by a very good dinner at a fish restaurant in the vicinity (Ribic, with a lovely garden), so all in all it was a great experience. We would love to come again!

Room Tip: If you don't mind a bit of noise from the road, room number 4 has a great balcony with a fine vi...

We were only there for 1 night but left wishing it could have been longer. We only came across it by chance on Google and couldn’t find any reviews so decided to take a punt and go for it... and couldn't have been more impressed.

It’s located between Portoroz and the Croatian border and looks out over the Salt Pans where they produce sea salt which they still do to this day. We had one of the rooms (number 4) that looks out over the salt pans and it was a great view, especially watching the sun set over the glistening salt pans.

Although it is a couple of kilometres from Portoroz and around 4 KM from Piran we felt it was much better staying here than in the towns and we were able to use the hotel bikes to cycle to the towns extremely easily. There is a cycle/walking route that runs all the way around the coast and it takes just over half an hour to cycle from Casa Del Sal to Piran.

The room was spotless and spacious and had a nice bathroom, the balcony was great with views across the salt pans and we really had no issues at all with room apart from the standard “2 single mattresses pushed together rather than a double” problem we seem to encounter in a lot of places around Europe.

As soon as we arrived we were shown to our room and offered a complimentary drink and cakes in the front garden which were excellent and throughout our 1 night stay the owner and his son were really friendly and made us feel extremely welcome.

We decided to have dinner at the Guesthouse and couldn’t have been more impressed. 3 courses of great seafood, local produce (I’ve never had such tasty home grown potatoes) and a bottle of wine all for around 50 euros for the both of us, which was incredible.

Breakfast the next day was more of the same, excellent home made jams (try to guess the green one?) cheese and meats, fresh bread and fried eggs with Slovenian ham. Easily one of the best breakfasts I’ve had.

Only negatives I could think of are that it’s close to a fairly busy road and if you are affected by the noise of cars going past this could be an issue (although we didn’t notice any traffic when the windows were shut). It is also not in a town with not much directly around the guesthouse and you need to travel (walk, cycle, drive) to get to any of the towns (we actually saw this as a benefit rather than a problem).

You could probably find cheaper places around the coast but for sheer value and what you get for your money, this is difficult to beat. We’ll definitely be looking forward to going back when we get a chance to visit Slovenia again.

Room Tip: Room 4 had a great view
