“great views, fantastic pool”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 January 2007

I stayed on the top floor of this hotel and had a balcony overlooking the sea. The room was spacious the bed was huge, and the leisure facilities were great. There was a large indoor pool with wave machine and an outdoor pool. there is also a thai massage and therapy centre - which was reasonably priced and offered lots of different treatments. the pool had changing facilities and was very clean and well equipped. The food was buffet style but unusually for this kind of resort hotel was actually hot fresh and varied.

We enjoyed many things about this hotel, and could post many of the same comments as people have written about the Slovenija Hotel: friendly staff, good buffet which included veggie options, even the same curtains which didn't cover the windows! (we closed the shutters in the evenings anyway so this didn't really matter). We also enjoyed the pool complex (again the same one as for the Slovenija). There was just one unfortunate aspect of the stay: there is a restaurant opposite called the Meduza where a live band played extremely loud music until 01.00 every night - so loud that nothing could keep it out! It wasn't exactly heavy metal, more an east European pastiche of Elvis, Tom Jones, etc, but being subjected to the same act for four hours night after night at ultra-high volume was pretty painful! Complaining to the hotel management made no difference, event hough the Meduza is on their own beach. We tried to stay out for as long as possible most evenings, although there were times when we were sitting at other venues a long way down the road, sometimes with their own music playing, and could still hear the Meduza!

In every other respect I would recommend this hotel to anyone, especially if they have young children or wish to use the otherwise excellent hotel facilities; I would suggest they save money and take cheaper rooms at the back (shame to lose the lovely views of the bay though). For us, the noise from the Meduza has made us think that we will try another hotel should we find ourselves in Portoroz again.

  • Liked — Good water features, both within hotel and at nearby beach.
  • Disliked — Loud live music from nearby premises
  • Tips/Secrets — Check out the other hotels on the seafront. The Riviera and Slovenija are part of a group of 6 hotels there with the same owners, so all will provide access to the same good facilities. They are not all in the same UK brochures though, so I expect this needs some research.

We stayed at the Hotel Slovenija in June for a week. Our room had a balcony which overlooked the sea, and had a very nice view. The curtains in the room were very thin, and only covered half the window, which meant that we had to close the shutters every night, and the carpet was also stained and dirty. The dining room is very large, it looked like a works canteen, and all the meals were buffet style, which meant that the food was only luke-warm, and didn't taste very nice. The orange and apple juices for breakfast were very weak, and any vegetables that were left over from the night before, went into the salad bar the next day. Every night the dessert was sponge cake cut into squares or water melon. As we were on half-board, we put up with the meals for 5 nights, hoping that the food would improve, but it didn't, so the last 2 nights we went to the Hotel Marko down the road, and had a la carte meals which were of a very high standard. As the Hotel Slovenija is rated as a 4 star hotel we would not expect this poor standard of food. We complained about the food to our rep. who told us that was the main complaint with the hotel, and we also complained to the hotel. We would not recommend this hotel.

We have just returned from a week at the Hotel Slovenija.

Our room was large and faced onto the hillside at the back which was a nice view. There was a 7 ft double bed, a large settee and a small table and 2 chairs in the room so better than average seaside sized room!

Bathroom was large (no bath, just a shower) and the whole hotel was scrupulously clean. The lifts were efficient too.

Food - excellent range and full buffets. Pork was on *every* night! Other meats alternated and there was always a fish/pasta/veggie option.

Swimming pools. We had differing opinions on this. I found the system tedious but my travelling companion liked it as it made the pool 'secure'.

Basically you have to go to the complex and get a swipe card and go through a turnstyle. There were communal changing rooms inside. No shoes allowed in the pool complex so you leave them on racks provided or carry them.
You then have to go through a footbath - and the floors thereafter are VERY slippy.

The indoor pool complex is superb - and shared with the Hotel Riviera who have an entrance from the other end. There are two pools (one large with a bridge over and one round which is much warmer and leads into a grotto)
No pool goes deeper than 1.35m - and no diving or underwater swimming is allowed.

You have to go through all this rigmarole with the swipe card to get to the outdoor pool - which is basically a paddling pool (very disappointing) and there is VERY limited space around it. I would imagine it would be HELL in high season. No reserving of sunloungers either. If you are not THERE (or in the pool) you have to vacate your lounger.

There's not much room to turn them round either when the sun is in a different position.
The next sunlounger is nearly on top of you.

I found this aspect disappointing.

So the alternative is the beach........except there isn't one. Complete misnomer there. The beach is a concrete promenade with steps into the sea. There is nothing for a nervous swimmer (or non swimmer) to hold on to.

This is pretty much the case along the entire Slovenian coastline, there are places to sit on grass and a couple of man-made sandy bits but basically there are NO beaches - and I wouldn't recommend anyone to take young children to anywhere on this coastline to be honest. I would be worried sick with small children.
There are very few facilities for youngsters and I think teenagers would be bored stiff.

Portoroz and surroundings are entirely destinations for couples.

The bus service along the coast is excellent and there are some lovely walks.

If you go into Koper (Capodistra) and then catch the bus on to Trieste be SURE to get your tickets at the bus station ticket office or they won't let you on and drive off and leave you :-(

If you go to Trieste you need your passport - they are VERY keen on checking them at the Italian border and guards get on the bus.

The Slovenija had conferences on while we were there - I find it a bit disconcerting to be trailing up wet and bedraggled from the pool to meet a suited business type in the lift! Maybe that's just me!

The staff in the hotel are superb - efficient and well organised and very friendly. The place runs like clockwork.

There are lots of facilities in the complex (there are 6 hotels in the LifeClass complex) including a newsagent, a bank, boutiques, hairdressers, jewellers etc and several different cafes & bars and a pasticceria and gelateria. All quite expensive!

All in all we had an excellent stay there and enjoyed it immensely. Everyone seems to speak excellent English.

We would recommend Slovenia and the hotel Slovenija to couples. It's high standard and elegant. Be warned - if you took children they would be fed up pretty quickly!

We stayed here for a week and it was all we could hope for-it was lovely and clean. The food was great-lots of choice and new food to try
. Our 5 year old enjoyed the club across the road.
The staff were lovely.
Swimming pools were great for all of us
We went to Venice which was an added bonus. The only thing is there are not a lot of shops in the area if you are into that ( we wern't)
Would come back again

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 March 2005

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Slovenija in Portoroz for two weeks in mid-September 2003. Having spent a very hot July fortnight in Bled a few years earlier, and not being very fond of heat, we thought September would be cooler. It was still extremely warm, however, and there was only two days with any rain, which soon cleared up.

The hotel was everything we hoped for when we booked. Extensive buffets for breakfast and dinner with plenty of choice, and even though we are vegetarians we had no problems finding something we enjoyed. In fact, we ate far too much! (Local ice-cream parlours were also a great attraction...)

The rooms were clean and comfortable. We choose a Superior room with a sea view, because they are larger and the view is much better. There was some noise into late evening from the bar across the road, but the band was very good so we didn't mind! The rooms at the rear of the hotel are apparently noisier because of a nearby club. We were there at the end of season, so it was quieter than it would be in the summer.

All the staff were so kind and helpful that we were very sorry to leave them behind when we left!

The hotel also contains a conference centre, so there was generally an interesting array of delegates at mealtimes. They were not in any way intrusive, and the hotel is also popular with locals and Italians.

An interesting phenomenon was the Saturday apparition of newly-weds, in hooting cavalcades of decorated cars, travelling the length of the seafront and back. (And, on one memorable occasion, of motorbikes, with the bride's headress streaming out behind and her dress hitched up over her knees!)

Not being athletic, we didn't try out the leisure facilities, but the two pools Iindoor and outdoor) appeared excellent and very clean indeed.

There are plenty of days out to be had from Portoroz and it is close to both Italy and Croatia. We spent much of our time on boat trips, as well as walking to the beautiful town of Piran (and back). A visit to the Postojna Caves is a must and it is possible to take a day trip to Venice. A local boat service calls at all the coastal towns and villages, and the local capital of Koper contains many old and interesting buildings. There are also plenty of local buses.

We travelled with Crystal Holidays, and their Slovenian rep was excellent. I suffer from heart problems and she was enormously helpful with arranging a clinic visit for me when I was unwell. The clinic at nearby Lucija was first-rate and cost me nothing, with the E111 form.

Slovenia is a lovely country. Very beautiful, and multifaceted. It is extremely clean - much cleaner than the UK - and the people are charming and kind. The area around the coast is very different from the Alpine part, both scenically and culturally. We will definitely go again.
