A wonderful hotel in an excellent location both for sightseeing and relaxing.
It is easy to get to the hotel from the airport by using the airport shuttle, you will be delivered straight to the hotel door. And, if this is your first visit to Budapest, then the shuttle will be the easiest way to get you to your hotel whilst giving you a mini city tour en route and allowing you to gain your bearings.
Once you are settled you will find the No 16 bus the perfect service for getting across the river and to the main Metro, tram & bus routes in Pest. The bus stops a couple of minutes’ walk from the hotel and runs regularly so you never have to wait long, even if you just miss one.
Now to the hotel. We visited Budapest for the Christmas markets and this hotel was a dream to stay at. The hotel was cosy and the staff welcoming and very helpful. The rooms were excellent, we were on the top floor overlooking the inner courtyard as we had asked for quiet rooms and I had feared a room overlooking the road might be noisy because of the cobbled streets. I can’t comment as to whether it would be, all I know is that it was so wonderfully peaceful, no noise apart from bird song in the morning.
The room was spacious and nicely decorated. The bed was very comfortable with good pillows. There were very good tea & coffee making facilities and ample wardrobe space. The bathroom was wonderful, large and modern. A very good sized bath with plenty of hot water. Best of all was the toasty warm heated floor which was bliss to walk on bare-footed even in the middle of the night ! And very useful if you need to rinse out any clothes and have them dry over-night. For once, leaving your towel on the floor after showering is a good thing as it will dry whilst you are down at breakfast !
The breakfast room is small but we never had a problem finding a table. Breakfast is sufficient and has a good choice of fare, enough to set you up well for the day. When the weather is warmer you can eat outside in the courtyard.
Once breakfast has finished the room is closed for a short time for cleaning then it is re-opened so that you can sit there to rest and help yourself to hot drinks. A very welcome respite after a busy morning’s walking & sight-seeing.
There are a number of good restaurants close by so finding somewhere to eat in the evening is not a problem although the No 16 bus runs till late (around midnight I believe) if you wanted to eat more centrally. We found it quite easy to eat late, which is useful if you prefer to eat after you’ve been to the theatre/ballet, or if you are late back from a day’s sightseeing.
It feels very special to be staying up in the Castle area, no more so than at night, when the area empties out and you can walk around peaceful streets and have the stunning views of Pest, lit up against the night sky, all to yourself.
The hotel is also well located for all the sites in the castle area such as Fisherman’s Bastion, St. Matthias Church, the Labyrinth, Cave Hospital, Castle Museum etc. There are other smaller museums, galleries and shops worth a visit too.
The National Dance theatre, about a 5 minute walk away, is something to add to your itinerary as they have a regular programme of dance with very cheap tickets. Shows in the evening and also on Sunday mornings, a nice way to start the day. It’s a nice venue with a little café inside & loos (always very useful to know where they are !). There is also a very good restaurant - Rivalda - next door.
We’ve stayed at several top hotels in Budapest including the Gresham Palace & Kempinski Hotel Corvinus. They are both lovely hotels but we felt more comfortable and cosseted at the Buda Castle Fashion Hotel :-)
