“Great location ; friendly staff”
Reviewed 14 February 2014

This hotel had small rooms which are a bit dated. There is no drawer space, just shelves in the closet. Lobby extremely small. The location is perfect and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The breakfast allowance for the restaurant was good and the food very tasty.

This little 'French' style boutique hotel made our trip to Budapest. The decor in the room was opulent but refined, the free mini bar helped to soothe away the cares of a day's sight-seeing in the city. Breakfast was a generous allowance of €12 each and not once did we manage to exceed the allotted amount! Totally recommend a stay here!

Beautifully decorated rooms in the grand Hungarian style and a wonderful location within walking distance of - but not right on - Vaci Street (the strolling, shopping, eating tourist hub),Domany Synagogue, The Danube and Andrassy, Kiraly Street (younger, bar vibe).

The receptionists slash concierges were always willing to help and show their passion for Budapest.

However, the restaurant was a little snooty although the breakfast allowance of EUR12 was more than adequate. The breakfast itself comes off a fairly diverse, if not overwhelming selection. It tends towards continental rather than a more solid eggs and bacon based one. Hey. It's Europe. On arrival, you're given a free tea drink voucher for use in the restaurant. If you use it without ordering a cake or snack look out for sarcastic comments or resistance. There are so many other, cheaper, more authentic choices in the area that I wouldn't bother with the restaurant for for lunch or dinner.

Note that as at January 2014, the hotel was undergoing renovation and there was loud banging and drilling from approximately 10am to 6pm.

Room Tip: Choose one with a balcony - Yes even in winter. It's quaint. There are only two, I believe.

We stayed for 3 nights in early January and loved the hotel. It was very comfortable, very accessible to transport to get around Budapest and to shopping, restaurants and other entertainment. The hotel itself was lovely with great character, small and friendly. Just loved the huge claw foot bath in our room as much for myself to soak in as for watching my tall husband trying to manage the hand held shower!! Most amusing!! Food was also excellent. Staff were very helpful. Would recommend it to anyone visiting Budapest on holiday.

Its a very sweet hotel in a great location for wandering Budapest. Our room was lovely, the staff was friendly and helpful. It was a little noisy with the window open, but they are double windows and with them closed it was nice and quiet.
Breakfasts in the restaurant were delicious. Dinner was also good although I was not crazy about the harp player. Friends who live in Budapest love the cafe and go there all the time. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

This was our first time in Budapest and we had many questions about how to make the most of our 4 days. The front desk staff was incredibly helpful and responsive even though they work very long hours. It made a huge difference and I might just second another reviewer's comment that they also respond promptly in perfect English during the booking process. Even though we arrived at midnight, we had no doubt that the driver would meet us at the airport and our room would be waiting for us.

Room and bathroom were on the small side but perfectly adequate. Furnishings and linens were high quality as were the shampoo and soap. What we loved: the complimentary mini bar (we looked forward to our little bottle of sparkling wine with homemade cookies before bed), the croissants in the café each morning, harp music in the café most nights (our room was above the café and that's all we heard and it was delightful). We felt the pricing was more than fair but of course this is central Europe, not Paris. But there are moments when the Gerloczy feels like Paris.

We found the service in the café to be a little choppy probably because of the small misunderstandings of our requests in English. Once the servers got to know us and our preferences, they were very friendly and accommodating. There is a mandatory 12 euro charge per person for breakfast and we never spent it all. Didn't really mind the charge since it was convenient to go downstairs for breakfast and the café is very charming and comfortable. Ate one dinner in the hotel and no complaints but we wanted to experience other venues. In extremely cold weather, it would have been wonderful to not have to go out of the hotel for dinner.

The hotel is very well located close to the river, the pedestrian shopping area, and to all forms of public transportation. We got around by foot mostly only once taking a taxi to Buda. We even walked to the Rudas baths one morning. We would have gone to more baths if it they had been a little easier to figure out and get to.

If you are interested in the services of a guide, the Gerloczy can arrange for you to see the City with Zsofia who is incredible. I wanted to explore the neighborhood in Buda where my grandmother grew up, and I had a very enjoyable and informative morning with Zsofia. She is very well prepared, personable and fun. A tour with Zsofia is one of the options in the Gerloczy Perfect Days package.

All in all, we had a great experience at the Gerloczy which made for an extraordinary time in Budapest.

Room Tip: Rooms have either a shower or a bathtub, but not both. If you care, it's important to specify...

This being my first visit to Budapest, I was completely taken by it.

The hotel is reminiscent of a by gone time when grace came before competition, attention came before dollars. The staff are attentive and quietly spoken and the manager is keen to know how to improve service and environment. We stayed only 4 nights and by the time we left I felt 'part of the family'. We enjoyed a large balcony room, which enabled plenty of room to move. Fittings were either the real deal or reproductions and luxurious curtains to help keep out the cold. A mini bar free of charge.

The rooms sit atop the cafe which one enters via a time warp. Pre Cold War style, and good wholesome food (I recommend the Goulash). At night a harp player performs his unique renditions while the resident canary sings along. Charm, charm, charm.

This hotel reflects a willingness to assist travellers and a yearning to come in to "the 22nd century" as our Manager intimated...however, I asked him not to step too far into the 22nd century, because we have lost a lot as a result.

I would recommend this hotel. There are the few tiny things such as having tissues in the room, but this is nothing compared to what the hotel achieves.

Room Tip: Balcony room overlooking the square
