“Decent place with a good price for the budget minded traveler”
Reviewed 14 August 2011

We stayed four nights at City Hostel Buda during a recent backpacking trip through Central Europe. The price was great. The room was simple, no kitchen or toilet in room but we had two twin beds, a sink and a shower. The toilet and kitchen were near our room in the hallway.

This hostel is not in the 'happening' part of Budapest (see their sister Hostel, "City Hostel Pest") and it takes a few public transit rides and a short walk to get to the hostel. But what it lacks in convenience is made up in great price and peace and quite. If you are looking for a simple and affordable stay in Budapest- this is a great option.
By the way, the prices change during early or mid August due to the Sziget Music Festival and it may be booked up so try to avoid that time or make a reservation.

I stayed in the hostel for just one night. I quite liked it. It's not the fanciest place you can hang out, but if you just want to have a decent and clean place where to sleep, go for it! The place is actually a student dorm used in summer as a hostel. So yeah, you can imagine long corridors with rooms side by side.

The rooms are quite small, but they have very comfortable beds, clean sheets, clean floors, clean walls, decent furniture. The bath in the room had only shower and sink. For toilets there's a bathroom at the end of the corridor. The toilets were all very clean, they had toilet paper and liquid soap and hands dryer.

All in all, i liked it. For a night, we payed 25 euros for a double room, which was a very good price for what they offer. The place is full of youngsters from all over the world. They have internet access on the reception. The staff was quite nice with us. Maybe we were just lucky... I recommend it!

This place felt like a hospital, really! The guy at reception didn't know his head from his thumb and was incapable of giving me proper directions. I packed my bags the next day and left!

Budapest is a fun place and this hostel is far from being fun!

To begin with the place looks like an old hospital/mental institution . The rooms are extremely tiny and have really dirty walls and floors. When we awoke the morning after. our arrival we were astonished to find the place crawling with ants - hundreds of them. When we were eventually relocated our next room was the same size with blood on the walls . You also have to pay for a fan . To make things worse the hostel is halfway up a mountain on the buda /old side of town so it really doesnt live up to its name . Worth 15 euro per night? no way I wouldnt stay here even for free if i was homeless.

It's not because 'newly renovated' means that they're still in the progress of renovating and are actually situated next to a buildingsite. Or because the 'green part of Gellert-Hill' means it's quite a hike to any of the interesting parts of town. Or because the place has the atmosphere and characteristics of an empty hospital. Or that the little amount of toilets were mostly dirty and out of paper.

The thing that tipped me off about this place is that it was simply unfriendly. From the moment you walk in, you're told to obey the rules through print-outs with an abundance of exclamation marks: checking out late? Pay up or you'll be forced out of your room!!! Parking on their property? They'll call the police!!! Smoking in the room? They'll call the police some more!!! Making noise after 22:00? Police!!!

Sure, any hostel needs rules. But they are not enforced by threatening your guests through pamflets in every room. Especially not when the staff seems incompetent to actually enforce those rules themselves. (It was quite noisy at night). In fact, the staff seemed incompetent to complete the simpliest of tasks. They demand you leave your roomkey at the reception when you go to the city, but fail to ask for ID when returing, thus handing out keys to whoever shows up at the reception with a random roomnumber. Paid services they advertise are doing the laundry or fixing breakfast. None of which they got right a single time we asked (and paid) them to.

They provide beds for an ok price. That's about the best thing about the place. Don't go here if you're looking for a nice, friendly place to hang out. Because then they probably will call the police!!!!
