We usually try one restaurant like this on our last day of a trip but the restaurant was closed on that day so we started out with it as our first! I would put it right up there on my list of amazing food, excellent service and extremely well versed on the wines of the area. Not the least expensive place but well worth the money if you are a true foodie...We had a six course tasting menu and enjoyed every bite. They even give you the menu as a souvenier!!!!

This was our big splurge meal of our trip to Budapest and was certainly worth the visit.

We opted for the full menu, thinking it would be a tasting menu - and this may have been a mistake in hindsight! They have 14 dishes on the menu, so you end up (as a couple) with 7 courses each. Full courses. Somewhere around the fourth course we both realised we'd perhaps taken on a bit too much.

The food is incredibly well cooked and presented, with interesting combinations of flavours (venison, beetroot, elderflower for example). There are nice touches, such as a range of flavoured butters to go with your bread (duck fat being a stand out). The staff were incredibly friendly and never overbearing.

On the downside it did turn out to be very expensive (a miscalculation on my part), but I'd still argue it is 'value for money' when placed next to some (inferior) UK restaurants.

Dear plisskin82,

Thank you for joining us. It is great that you have enjoyed dining here, however I would like to assure you that we do adjust the portions depending on the number of courses you have opted for.
As per the value, we can't compromise the quality of our ingredients for a lower price. As you wrote the combinations of flavours were up to your taste, and we can only achieve this result by using the best goods.
Thank you for your understanding, and please do come back during your next visit in Budapest.

Visited this restaurant with my wife and two sons. It was absolutely fantastic. The team were so knowledgeable and enthusiastic taking care to describe each dish and the accompanying wine. We had the 5 course tasting menu with paired wines and both food and wine were exceptional. A wonderful occasion.

Costes deserves its Michelin star. The restaurant decor is modern and wonderfully calm. (We had already experienced the tourist restaurant with gypsy band.) The service from the knowledgable staff was excellent ("Kosonom" Miklos, Bela and Rita). The food and wine were described to us in perfect English throughout the meal. The quality of the table settings was also very good. Good cutlery, interesting plates and superbly fine wine glasses. Everything here combined to enhance the dining experience.
We had to take an early (18.30) booking as it was the last one open on their website, but this was not a problem. Bookings are organised to allow the kitchen time to execute their perfect dishes. We were made very welcome and the menu system was explained. We ordered Hungarian "champagne" for an aperitif and were impressed by the quality of the Chateau Vincent we were served and when the canapes arrived we knew that the evening would be very special. This was the first of several Hungaran wines we had and all showed that Hungary can produce top quality wine. We had the four course menu with matched wines. The aperitif came with canapes and we had an amuse bouche at the start of the meal and petit fours with coffee at the end so the four courses expanded into seven delicious episodes. The dishes were all faultless. Each was designed and executed perfectly. The flavours were intense, the textures were well contrasted and colours were pleasing. Each plate was a work of art with lots of delightful surprises. At the end of our meal we believed we had had a very special experience. The high cost of the meal reflected the care and attention put into it. What price perfection?
One small thing that could be improved would be the temperature control as we found the restaurant to be a little cool at our window table later in the evening.
I wish Costes every success in the future. I hope they will continue to champion Hungarian produce and that they will be an example that raises the standard of dining in Hungary. If you are excited by good cuisine, Costes is a must-do in Budapest.

Dear Ursus-Maritimus,

It was a pleasure to have you both here. We really appreciate your kind words.
Particularly happy for the fact that we could surprise you with some of the finest quality Hungarian wines.
We carefully read your note about the aircon, which we maintained in the meantime, and hopefully you'll have an even better experince during your next visit at our restaurant :)
