“Stylish and unique”
Reviewed 2 June 2014

I enjoyed my stay at Brody House for four nights this past May. I think it is a very unique hotel and definitely would recommend it to anyone wanting something more unconventional than a typical hotel. The breakfast looked nice, but I never stayed because I felt there were too many (and certainly less expensive) options for delicious baked goods and/or fresh fruit by leaving and exploring Budapest. I had no issue with the lack of an elevator. The stairs are very shallow and there are only two flights. They also offer to carry your bags for you.

Pros:
- The space. It is a beautiful building and all the furnishings are eclectic and tasteful. It feels very contemporary. It is spacious, airy, and comfortable.
- The room. Again, spacious and comfortable. Well stocked with towels, toiletries, hair dryer.
- The service. The girls at the front speak excellent English and are very warm and friendly. They are a big reason as to why I would recommend the hotel.
- Location. Easy walking distance to absolutely everything – even the Castle District, etc – and also very close to the Metro.
- The extras. The honour bar, the free tea, water, the communal spaces to hang out in. All much more welcoming than a typical hotel.

Cons:
- Noise can be an issue. If other guests don’t recognize that you can hear everything in the corridors, you can be rudely awakened.
- The lack of night staff. I never felt unsafe with no one there, but if something were ever to go wrong, having someone actually there as opposed to a phone call away offers greater peace of mind.
- Inconsistencies. Nothing major went wrong, but there were some issues with air conditioning and missed room clean/towel change. I was awoken by housekeeping one morning and said I wasn’t yet up. They never came back. It wasn’t worth mentioning at 730 pm because reception closes at 8 and I was leaving the next day. But in a hotel so small, how do you not come back?

One of the most exciting places I have ever stayed in-

Great location, delicious breakfast, amazing building, friendly helpful staff... And an 'honesty bar'- i.e.. you take what you want and write it down in a notepad to be charged later!

The lounge is flooded with natural light from the large windows, and you could stay there all day having tea or coffee…or in the magical internal courtyard with ivy hanging down the sides...

Extraordinary, individually designed rooms- stayed in the 'Printa', a huge suite with a bedroom and sitting room and kitchenette divided by a long corridor- beautifully furnished, simple and tasteful fittings.

Can't wait to go back to Budapest and stay there- it's a very special place!

Room Tip: All rooms are special!

This was a break for my partner's 60th birthday - a pressy from his elder daughter so can't comment on value for money! What an amazing place, quirky and definitely for art and craft lovers - everywhere is packed with interesting items. Very well situated within walking distance of all the major attractions and brilliantly helpful staff, nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was really good. Our bedroom - Alex Tinei - well what a luxury to have a bath in the bedroom - a gold bath on claw feet, what an experience.

Room Tip: Alex Tinei if you want to have a gold bath in your room!!!

I stayed here with family recently and what a lovely quirky place to stay. Very safe and secure and good location. Staff very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Wanted to do a cruise on river and one staff member helped me book and was a great experience, would definately recommend. We stayed in the bullet room. Lovely large bath to soak in after a day walking. Want to go back. Thanks brody house.

From our first contact by email to our last farewell this was an incredible experience.
It was so good to be greeted every morning by smiles throughout the hotel from staff who obviously enjoyed their work.
From reception to whoever cooked the best ever Eggs Benedict, the service was the best.
And as for the bedroom and sitting rooms etc there is only one word, wow.
A definite 5 star from our first ever review and we will be back!

As an artist, art lover, and travel enthusiast, I truly appreciate Brody House. The design of the hotel combined with the art work displayed throughout creates a beautiful haven within Budapest. I stayed at the hotel with my sister and we had a fabulous stay. The staff was friendly, the eggs benedict was delicious, and the overall impression was beyond satisfactory. I hope to return soon.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Printa suite. It was incredibly spacious.

I liked Brody House, but it is a bit frustrating - like an inch you can't scratch. They do some things very well and then drop the ball in other areas.

The good stuff:
a. Staff are so helpful + friendly
b. Great art and cool/funky design
c. Good location
d. Nice bed, good sleep (unless woken by noisy neighbors)
e. Great "club room" for lounging around and relaxing

But there are a lot of oversights/gaps:
a. There is no elevator so you have to climb up two very high floors (more like 4 normal floors) every time to enter the hotel.
b. Other guests can be very noisy - I got woken @ 06:10 by people discussing their night time endeavors in the corridor
c. There is no shaving mirror, tea/coffee making/fridge or TV (that’s right, no TV or other in room entertainment)
d. The toiletries are lame for a "designer" hotel/guesthouse
e. The water was tepid at best for my shower one morning - unbearable!
f. You only get two complimentary bottles of water per stay regardless of the number of nights
g. Housekeeping don't change your towels - it seems you must keep them for the duration of your stay!

So, I would stay at the Brody House again if I was visiting Budapest alone but I don't think it is the sort of place you could take a partner.

Dear Bert - Apologies for the slow reply. Your review slipped through the net! We appreciate the positive comments and take note of the perceived oversights and comments as follows: a. No elevator: We are in an historic/heritage building for which the stairs are a key architectural feature dating from the time the house was built (1896). The stairs are at all steep - after all, they were intended to be manageable for elegant ladies with long dresses!
b. noisy guests - sorry to hear that you had night owls as neighbours; no normally an issue we have to deal with. Did you ask them to be quiet?!
c. no shaving mirror, tea/coffee making/fridge or TV - we have deliberately elected not to have TVs in each room. Budapest is a super city and we hope people will explore it. Besides, most of our guests did into our books, honest bar or, if they need digital entertainment, use their own electronic kit (tablets, laptops etc) for which wide-ranging WIFI seems to be more important.
d. 'lame' toiletries - sorry to hear you did not like the products; we chose them because they are local, not tested on animals and fit the values with which we wish to operate. e. Tepid water - did you raise it with reception? some guests have mentioned the opposite that the water is very hot!
f. You only get two complimentary bottles of water per stay regardless of the number of nights - we have an honesty bar operating 24/7 from which you can access water anytime. Often people don't drink the water in the room so we think it makes most sense to centralise this resource. Again, in the interest of being sparing.
g. Towel change - did you ask for new towels?? We typically change every 2-3 days (on ecological grounds) and this seems to be fine for most people. We always supply an extra towel free of charge if a guest asks for it.

We hope to see you, if you are in Budapest again!

Best wishes,
The Brody Team
