We arrived early but were able to go straight to our room which was good. No lift so not a choice for less than able bodied. A simple room: clean, decent size; good bathroom; comfy beds. Sadly the windows didn't open - health and safety I guess. No hospitality tray in the room which was a disappointment and, though we asked, we could not get coffee or tea to take up to the room. This very basic facility - even via a machine - should be available and must be a disappointment to so many visitors. No hair dryer in the room either. We heard a guest asking for one at Reception and she was told 'it' was booked out. Clearly there must be just the one to be shared.
Fronting the hotel is a pedestrianised street so no traffic noise. At night however, well to be precise, in the very early morning, the noise from deliveries outside to the pub next door, presumably the hotel and the supermarket opposite, as well as banging from the kitchen went on for ages and really disturbed our sleep.
Breakfast - a self serve buffet was provided from 7-10 in a beautiful, high ceilinged, very elegant room was very average. We went one morning at 9.30 to find no hot selection at all. When we finally found someone to ask about supplies we were told there would be no replenishments. The kitchen, which opened on to the room, appeared to be devoid of chef.
Another day, we arrived as the first guests at 7.15 and realised why the hot food had run out! In the 'hot box' there was only enough scrambled egg for two and about 12 mini 'weiners'. Not appetising but not plentiful either. The continental selection of cheeses, breads etc was OK; the toaster appreciated and the coffee great.
The weird thing was that the coffee came from a press button, self serve machine - so why not make this available in the lobby? Even at a small charge, the facility would be a great addition for guests.
The reception staff were friendly and very helpful. Apart from the entrance lobby there are no communal areas to sit outside of the bedrooms. The hotel is basic but, at the price, is generally good value. The location is great - an easy walk in any direction to a site, transport, people watching location. One to consider for location and if budget is a real consideration.
