“Great Hotel”
Reviewed 3 September 2014

Great hotel, staff very helpful, location is outstanding. Hotel is on the banks of Danube, within walking distance to Great Synagogue, Market Place, and fine dinning. Breakfast at the hotel is a must.

We were placed into the Intercontinental Hotel on the banks of the Danube River in Budapest because the locks were malfunctioning and we could not access our Vantage tour boat on time August 1, 2014. It was disappointing, for a short time, but the outstanding room overlooking the River and Palace on the Buda side of the River made up for it all. The entrance is imposing and the lobby area is outstanding as well as warm and inviting. The staff spoke excellent English and were all quite pleasant. The food, served by buffet for both dinner and breakfast was outstanding in quality as well as service and choice. The room was spacious, nice clean bathroom and large shower..... except that I could not access the shower to actually operate....so washed up while in the tub. I have no idea what the actual cost was as it was part of our Vantage boat package.... but I would elect to stay here again if ever I returned to Budapest.

Room Tip: ask for a room overlooking the Danube River... a magnificent sight in the evening when the River, th...

We had a very pleasant stay at the Intercontinental in Budapest. We had a breathtaking view of the Danube from our room. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We stayed here prior to a Viking River Cruise and discovered our room overlooked the dock Viking uses. The location was ideal to the main sights of Budapest.

We stayed here for 3 nights towards the end of August 2014. We booked a river view room (well worth the additional spend or you would have absolutely no view save for a dingy building at the back of the hotel). We were greeted warmly. The hotel is wonderfully located near the Chain Bridge with lovely views across the river to the palace and Citadel.

Our room was spotlessly clean and perfectly adequate for our purposes but a bit small with dated (and quite boring) décor. Ok you don't spend lots of time in a hotel room when you're on holiday but it could have done with a bit of a refresh and modernisation. We had a bath with a shower overhead which was fine for us. There wasn't a lot of room in the bathroom for storing toiletries but there was a plentiful collection of hotel toiletries which were restocked regularly.

I didn't discover the Budapest guide provided by the hotel until the final day - it was tucked away in a draw with no obvious signs of its existence. A small grumble was that there was only one "comfortable" chair - no great for a room of two. I also hated having a king size bed (two beds pushed together) with two separate single duvets. If you're going to do this as standard, at least provide the option of having a single king-sized duvet. Tea and coffee in the room was provided but there was only a single tea bad of earl grey, English breakfast and red berries but I'm sure you could have got additional tea-bags if required - staff were very amenable to assisting guests.

Breakfast was ok - fresh (rather than tinned fruit presented as fresh) would have been welcome as would more vegetarian (hot) options. It didn't quite live up to our expectations of breakfasts at other intercontinental hotels for instance the orange juice we were given one morning was fermenting (not nice)!

We had drinks in the bar most evenings (ok but there are cheaper options locally) but did not eat in the hotel in the evenings so can't comment on food other than breakfast.

General conclusions was that this was a reasonable hotel, well located with welcoming and helpful staff. Rooms were a bit on the pricey side for what they were and would benefit from a face lift. Breakfast was average. Overall if I were to stay in Budapest again I have to confess that I might consider going to the Four Seasons (just up the road) which looked rather more luxurious notwithstanding that I am an ambassador on the IHG loyalty programme and therefore generally stay at Intercontinentals if I can.

A few tips:

Hotel can arrange airport transfers for a fixed price of HF 8500 each way.

You can also buy hop on hop off tour tickets at the concierge.

We liked "Kiosk" (towards pier 8 and the Elizabeth Bridge) for drinks (it's a modern bar) and the look of both Restaurant 21/Pierrot in the Castle District.

Room Tip: Choose a river view room.

I regret that we could not exceed all your expectations although all your comments are valuable for us for future development and for targeting perfection at each and every detail. Me and my 19 year old daughter stayed here for 4 nights in August we had a wonderful time.I dont think we could find any faults with the hotel. It was clean all the staff were great nothing was any trouble and everyone was happy to help they spoke very good English. The hotel had many different nationalities staying in it. Its location was excellent right by the chainbridge the views were spectacular especially in the evening. The hotel has a lovily spa which stays open till 10pm we visited it a couple of times to relax after our hectic day.Breakfast was excellent too with everything you could want fresh cooked omlelettes were very popular you had to que up to get one cooked. We didnt have any drinks at the hotel as their is so much choice nearby we wanted to try. There is an English pub behind the hotel the food was ok but seemed alittle expensive. We went on the opentop bus which gave us our bearings and it allowed you a trip on their boat to which was a lovily trip to Margeret island and we realised it could be used for two days.Budapest is an amazing place would definatilly go back and would recommend the hotel for sure.

Dear debz2765,
Thank you very much for taking your time writing your comment. I am fascinated how you describe your experiences you've been going through with your daughter and it makes me happy to read all about it. Thank you for your compliments about the hotel staff speaking very good English and being helpful every time. I am glad that you mention your recreation time in the Spa InterContinental and how much you liked the excellent breakfast with fresh-made omelettes. Four days are quite a convenient time for sightseeing but still not enough to see all the beauties of this city from historical times. I am looking forward to your return.

The Hotel is close to many places of interest. the Royal castle is just opposite on the other side of the river bank. it is advisable that you upgrade to higher floor rooms with a view of the River . fantastic views of the opposite bank and chain bridge.
Breakfast is well stocked and even has sushi for breakfast.
All the staff are very friendly and accommodating. The porters are very knowledgeable on the surrounding areas and places of interest. if you thought you missed something ask for their help. Must try the baths,(old Ottoman baths) you will find these everywhere. You will need a pair of clean clothes and a towel.

Room Tip: High floor room with River Danube view is a a must. Supplement charged is worth it.

Dear KKKenan,
thank you very much for taking your time for your notes. The riverside high floor rooms are providing a truly unique experience to look out from the window. I am more than happy that you had useful and friendly recommendations from the front desk staff. I could also just recommend to visit a bath in Budapest since it is a city of abundant thermal water.
