Located in the Buda Castle complex the museum is a good introduction to the history of Hungary seen in the microcosm of Budapest. There is a wide variety of exhibits from the earliest prehistoric times, up to the present. It will help the visitor understand the city, its architecture, art, culture , struggles and history better. There are also English texts on the displays. You can easily combine it with a visit to the National Gallery (a must!) and St Matyas Church and the top of Buda Hill.

Well although i'm not much of a museum guy, I did like vaticano museum but this one was really very boring. Visit the sourrounding area of the palace but better do not enter the museum.

A fairly interesting museum, but there's untapped potential here, particularly in the basement where there are remains of the old buildings but with almost no explanation to explain what you can see. Other exhibits failed to capture our interest, particularly the seemingly endless array of bits of pillar. Most items had English translations, but a handful of more interesting items were unfortunately Hungarian only.

Anyway, we spent about an hour inside and the 1800ft entry fee is reasonable.

Soon after we entered the museum, we noticed a guy following us. Even when we got into the tiny elevator, he ran to squeeze in with us. So instead of enjoying the museum, we kind of rushed through.

Just as we were leaving, we confronted him and asked him why he was following us. He said he works for the museum, and was tracking which exhibits we focused our attention on. Unbelievable! I should have asked for our money back.

We could not figure out where to go in the museum to track with the audio tape (which would have taken two days to listen to!). Nevertheless, the museum had a good collection and really gave you a feel for how many times this country has been overrun! If you can only choose one museum, opt for the House of Terror on Andrassy instead.
