Based in the Castle Royal Palace we had a really interesting couple of hours here learning all about how Hungary was created and the origins of both Pest and Buda cities. There is an amazing collection of clocks and oriental objects as well as the exposing of the earlier castle layouts / rooms in the basement areas. A must visit.

The displays were very well done, and as English speakers (and Russian, but that didn't help us at all) we had no problem reading everything presented.

It gave a very good background to the history of Budapest, with many items on display to illustrate each era.

We visited with two teenagers and a 10-year-old boy, and they were all quite interested in the entire thing.

I recommend that if this"1000 Years" exhibit is still open, go to see it on your first day. It will give you an excellent perspective on the historical sites around the center of the city and their significance in Hungarian history. I came out of it understanding a lot more than when I came in.
The rest of the museum is kind of pedestrian - lots to see but very little explanation (except if you understand Hungarian). Some renovation work was going on the corridors, so the entrance fee was discounted form 1800 to 1000 forint.

While this museum undoubtedly covers a lot of the history of Budapest (from prehistory up until modern times) it does so in rather a strange way. In some exhibits there is hardly any explanation of what you are looking at. There were quite a few artefacts with only Hungarian information (of course it is unrealistic to expect perfect translations, but a little would go a long way here!).

That said, the museum is not expensive and, if you have trekked all the way up to the castle, you could do worse than spend a little time learning about the city.

Located in the Buda Castle complex the museum is a good introduction to the history of Hungary seen in the microcosm of Budapest. There is a wide variety of exhibits from the earliest prehistoric times, up to the present. It will help the visitor understand the city, its architecture, art, culture , struggles and history better. There are also English texts on the displays. You can easily combine it with a visit to the National Gallery (a must!) and St Matyas Church and the top of Buda Hill.
