Saw madame Butterlfy - good opera but no English subtitles - so be familiar with the story. The interior is very beautiful! I can recommend this to everyone - also no opera lovers!

A small, marvelous opera house. Easy access by subway, a classic, beautiful venue with great acoustics. Enjoyed many great performances here.

We were only in Budapest for a day and thought we would check out the highly recommended opera. We thought we would do one of the tours they give most days at 3 or 4 pm. But we were on the fence about taking the tour when we found it cost about $15/person (including the optional "mini concert"). We asked someone leaving the earlier tour and they said it was wonderful so we paid our money and took the tour. And we were glad we did.

The large (huge) group of people was efficiently broken up into smaller groups by language and size of group. Our group of about 20 had a wonderful/enthusiastic younger woman guide who was quite knowledgeable about the history of the opera and explained it's history and highlights in an entertaining way as she took us through the many different areas of the opera house.

The real highlight was at the end when we did the "mini concert". One of the lead female soloists came into a smaller lounge area (with tremendous acoustics) and performed two songs for the group of about 50 who had chosen this option. Hearing her perform "close up" was one of the best vocal performances I have ever heard and certainly attended. In the second number she was using an empty crystal glass as a prop for the scene the song she was singing was associated with. I kept waiting to see if the glass would shatter (like in the old "is it live or is it Memorex" commercials). Overall highly recommended.
