On checking in we were asked if we wanted to upgrade our room to a Danube View room for 18 Euro and we were thankful we did. The room had spectacular views over the Danube, Buda Castle and Mathias Church, something we enjoyed every single day. The hotel is right opposite the Chain bridge and one minutes walk from the main square with all the shopping & restaurants, and 15 minutes walk from the Jewish Quarter and Andrassy Street where the high-end shops are, so the location is perfect. The hotel architecture and decor is absolutely first class, it actually looks and feels like a Palace but of course it never was a palace.
The rooms are incredibly luxurious in a traditional style, very spacious although not huge has a desk, minibar, flat screen TV and plenty of room for a roll-away bed for our daughter, never once did we feel cramped. There is a large luxurious marble bathroom with single large basin, plenty of room to put toiletries, separate shower and an alcove containing a toilet & bidet, and an endless supply of L' Occitane amenities. The hallway off the room leads to the bathroom, and has a large cupboard and shelving, and the very large hallway allies suitcases to be placed out of the way. The bedding has to be felt to be believed, soft down pillows and the smoothest of cotton bedding and a super comfy duvet. The type of bedding you want to buy and take home! The room temperature is controlled by a simple temperature dial and 3 speed fan setting, and we like our rooms quite chilly at night and this was easily achieved without being at all noisy.
The service though is what really sets this hotel apart, the best we have experienced, nothing is too much trouble, from emailing us prior to arrival offering a choice of limousine transport options from the airport ( very expensive!!, we chose to go by taxi instead), offered to arrange tours, which they did ( more about that later). The staff get to know you by name almost immediately , recall your breakfast choices of juice, coffee and meals, all the little touches that are too many to describe including having a bottle of water and towel ready for my wife as she returned from her morning run, to a card placed in the bathroom each evening at the turndown with a description of the temperature and weather conditions for the following day. There was no delay at all in getting the suitcases delivered up to the room and the roll-away bed brought in, all achieved within 5 minutes of arriving in the room. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her massage at the spa, which also has an indoor pool, coed sauna, and separate gender change rooms and steam rooms.
The breakfasts were very good but not exceptional, but again the service elevated it to another level.
My two criticisms of the hotel are:
a) the free Wi-Fi allows only a single device, and the speed was the slowest we experienced all over Europe at 750Kbps, incredibly frustrating, but we bought a 3G SIM card for our iPad and obtained speeds over 10Mbps. The hotel limits the speed to try to get you to "upgrade" to the paid service with allows an additional 3 devices and a speed 4 x faster which would be the minimum that would be usable. In this day and age, where we had free Wi-Fi for unlimited devices and speeds 10-15 x faster in every hotel, including those costing a fraction of the price we paid at the 4 Seasons, it is quite unnecessary and frankly disgraceful for a hotel charging nearly NZ$1,000 a night. This is something the hotel management needs to reconsider seriously.
b) there is no plug socket next to either side of the bed, for plugging in smartphones/iPads, a deficiency in the design, but hopefully something they can think about rectifying. There are plenty of other plug sockets in the room, but many people use the alarm function on their smartphone to wake up to and it's rather inconvenient if it's plugged in across the other side of the room.
Tips:
1. Vodafone offers 3G SIM cards for iPads at 3000HUF(10 Euro) for 3 Gb- there is a large Vodafone shop just off the main square, and T-mobile offers 4G which I believe is just being rolled out. The 3G at Vodafone gave me speeds up to 15Mbps which is incredibly fast, but the network doesn't allow hot-spotting.
2. The hotel concierge pre-arranged a private tour guide for a 3 hour walking tour of Budapest and the Jewish Quarter, and he was the most knowledgeable guide we have ever had, his knowledge of history was incredible, his English excellent and we enjoyed it so much we extended it to 6 hours. His name is George Galambos, cell no 36 309 428 588, email budapestguide@gmail.com, we give him our wholehearted recommendation.

Room Tip: Must have a room with a view of the Danube.

Thank you for your amazingly detailed and generous feedback regarding your recent stay at Four Seasons Gresham Palace in January. I really appreciate you taking your valuable time to share your experience with all the readers. It was great to learn that you took great pleasure in the décor and architecture of the Palace, the result of a careful restoration of this beautiful building and enjoyed the Four Seasons atmosphere.

Thank you for pointing out that based our availability our Front Office staff offered you the option to be upgraded to a Danube View Room, however please kindly note that the additional costs of this difference between room categories was likely 80 EUR instead of 18 EUR (to avoid confusing future guests.)

I was excited to read that from your check-in, through exploring the city with a professional tour guide, to dining with us and resting in our comfortable beds after a busy day with sightseeing, your family enjoyed the whole experience very much. We also appreciate your tips in regards to the Vodafone cards and your highly positive feedback in relation to the Private Tour Guide’s professional service.

Your remarks regarding the slow wifi and the lack of plug sockets on either sides of the bed were also well noted and will be for sure looked into and considered in the future.

In spite of the above mentioned criticisms I was so proud to learn the quality service you received in our Hotel sat it apart. This is very motivating for us to continue delivering the highest level of service and a personalized guest experience. We have been fortunate to amass a group of individuals who truly care about our guests and take great pride in their own performance.

I am sure many who plan to visit Budapest will find your review a valuable source of information.

I sincerely hope that we will have the opportunity of welcoming you back in the near future.

Sincerely,

Passions come and go, but a good atmosphered place is always treasured. As a regular visitor of the Gresham Palace, can share millions of moments spent with friends and business partners. The stuff is always very welcoming, knowing each of us by name on the spot and treating as family members, cause thats exactly the atmosphere keeps me running back on daily bases.
On a rushy day a nice stop with a cup of tea or a freshly squeezed juice of any taste desired and with the creativity of the stuff makes me feel in heaven, forgetting the noise of the city, not to mention the excellent view of the chain bridge and the castle.
The business lunch gives you an excellent variety of tastes, you can easily match your own lunch details from the provided list or even further more, they are delighted to complete any of your wishes straight away. There is a complimentary slip of soup, every day different, just a small surprise from the chef, that is making your waiting for the food more special.
The sunday brunch is exceptional with its Italian tastes, big variety of different starters, pasta, fish, high quality of integers, bakery and desserts, fulfilling everyones caprices. Special treatment for the kids is provided with a separate corner for toys, food and guidance, which makes the brunch a family enjoyed place, but not disturbing for the couples or solo guests.
The service is very quick, pleasant time value. The waiters never disturb with they present, discretely giving you space, but they are right there when its needed. They always know by a simple look, wether Im in a comfy dessert or in a sporty fresh juice mood. The name Fours Seasons for me is always a guarantee for a great service and pleasant stay no matter where I travel around the world...

We just got back from two days at the Four Seasons Hotel Budapest and it was really the highlight of the City. Budapest was a little sleepy this time of year, likely post new years pre-going back to work lull. The city was also very cold and gloomy, that being said it was not our favorite destination in a line up of Paris and London, both more vibrant cities any way but in particular this time of year.

If you are going to Budapest though, this is hands down the best place to stay in town, and was our personal highlight of the city. The location is phenomenal for site seeing, and also boasts beautiful views across the river to the castle hill (stunningly lit up at night for a great nighttime walk). This is also near a lot of great restaurants and even some nightlife and shopping.

The hotel is in a historic building that has been expertly converted into a hotel with a great attention to history and detail. The lobby with its glass ceiling is remarkable. I do not care for the swirly whimsical mosaics and carpets, but I think they are in line with the architecture of the space so I let it go for this property. The guestroom corridors are beautiful and all of the original staircases are preserved. The lobby bar is cozy and beautiful, and the main restaurant is great too with a lot of natural light, and probably even better in the spring or summer.

The guest rooms are very comfortable if a little bland. While the bedding was high quality, the rooms décor was very beige with little visual interest, especially when compared to the rest of the hotel. The room did not have the same character or sense of place, it really could have been a four seasons or high end hyatt or starwood property anywhere. The entry way, and bathroom however were very luxurious and unique. Some of the front facing rooms featured balconies and direct views of the bridge and castle hill and may have been a little more special than our side facing room with little to no view. All that being said, the room was quiet and comfortable and had every feature you could need.

The real highlight besides the downstairs public spaces was the spa and fitness center. A top floor indoor infinity lap pool, hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, and a very large and well equipped fitness center were all great and barely used. This extensive and high quality fitness/spa area seems a rarity even in Europe's finest hotels. The indoor spa and pools here were our perfect alternative to the public bath's that Budapest is famous for. The public bath's while interesting historically, in actuality were VERY crowded this time of year (likely due to the cold weather), and not particularly clean or restorative feeling at peak times. We left the jam packed Szechenyi baths within a few minutes and decided to have our own personal spa experience back at the hotel which was GREAT.

We did not have dinner at the hotel, but around the corner the concierge suggested a place called AZSU. It was not particularly busy and the design looked a little dated (typical for Budapest in our opinion) despite the restaurant being just 6 months old so we were worried; however, we were not disappointed. The restaurant's food and service was some of the best of our 8 day trip that included restaurants in Paris and London. All dishes were expertly prepared, and served without any attitude (common in some of the other aforementioned cities) . The dishes all sounded heavy on the menu, but in reality were very light and unique. Everything was delicious including the Hungarian wines, which tended to be moderately priced too. This meal was a highlight, so I would encourage visitors of the Four Seasons to try it, and ask the concierge for other dining recommendations too as they seem very in tune with what their guests will like. This was recommended over Costes (longtime best restaurant in Budapest), as it is a little less formal with the same food quality and you don't need to do a 5-8 course tasting menu.

Room Tip: Try one of the front facing rooms, some with small balconies. They may be more expensive but are li...

Thank you so much for this fantastic, detailed feedback regarding your recent stay at our Hotel. I am sure many who plan to visit Budapest will find your review a valuable source of information.

Your great description as to what one can expect when visiting Budapest and Four Seasons Gresham Palace is highly appreciated. I was extremely happy to read that you felt so well in our Hotel and that you thoroughly enjoyed your stay with us as well as managed to discover so much of what our beautiful city has to offer in spite of the fact that this time of the year Budapest was not as vivid and warm as you would have expected.

I was also happy to read that you were thrilled by the architectural details and the beauty of our Palace and that you enjoyed the spa area, the gym and the infinity pool on the 5th foor.

Your positive feedback about our facilities and employees, especially highlighting our Concierge making excellent recommendations on what to do and see and where to dine, are much appreciated. Thank you again for taking the time to share your personal Four Seasons experience with all the travelers around the world and we will have the pleasure to welcome you back soon!

We booked a room at the Four Seasons Budapest after reading that it was a top hotel in the world. The hotel is everything you would expect from a Four Seasons. The building is a former office building renovated in the 1990s after the fall of communism. The renovation was done beautifully. You feel like you are in a special place. Our first room had a horrible view (of a wall) but I complained and the manager Andrea moved us to a suite with an incredible view of the Danube and did not charge us any extra. Included was the New Year's Eve Dinner which was over the top gourmet food and entertainment with a band, singers and dancers. The concierge got us tickets for the Opera House which were great seats (6th row). We opted not to book our tours through the hotel because the rate was three times as much as an independent tour guide. The breakfast buffet was mediocre, but you can order off the menu as well. There is a Sofitel and an Intercontinental very close by that also look very nice.

Room Tip: Many rooms are facing small courtyards with only a view of a wall, so be sure to book a room with a...

It was great to read on Tripadvisor website that you celebrated New Year’s Eve with us, which turned out to be a great success.

I was also delighted to read your generous remarks about our Hotel. It is still a great feeling to learn that you were fascinated by our beautiful Palace, especially with its restoration and décor and that you enjoyed this unique combination of historic elegance and modern comfort. The transformation of this Palace into a Four Seasons Hotel was a tremendous task and the result is truly breathtaking, indeed.

I was glad that you found our staff courteous and very helpful particularly Andrea, our Front Desk Manager was able to assist with allocating you a more comfortable and spacious room with a fantastic view to the Danube, the Chain Bridge and the Castle area.

Please be assured that beside your very positive comments we also noted your criticism as well in regards to our breakfast buffet. Be assured that we have taken it very seriously.

We hope should your travels bring you back to Budapest that you would continue considering Four Seasons Budapest your hotel of choice

The hotel is in a great location, right next to St Stephen's Basilica and next to the famous chain bridge. All in all I would recommend this hotel but suggest you avoid all the extras which is where they take your money. We asked for a room with a view which we were told was an extra fee, (Four Seasons make you pay for every single thing, no special treatment or bending of the rules) but that's what you have to expect from them. We paid it and the view was magnificent even though the room was very small. We avoided an overpriced breakfast at the hotel and instead walked to Cafe Central which was great and had history (not a short walk but there are other places closer). One night we had a water and a cocktail at the bar which came to $24.00!! So we did not repeat that experience and instead went out locally. I liked that you could walk to the trendy Jewish area with all the bars but were far enough away from it to be not be disturbed by the chaos. The concierge was very helpful and kind for info about sights and events, even our tour guide mentioned that they were one of the better concierges in town, although the restaurant they recommended was the worst one we ate at our whole 4 days there so I would stick to the internet and Lonely Planet for better guidance on restaurants (Menza was great) as the concierge's other restaurant suggestions were all super expensive and not local (I didn't come all the way to Budapest for sushi) which made me feel that they were a bit out of touch.
All in all, the staff were nice, service was good, the bed was very comfy and the bathroom nice if a bit small, the clientele was a bit dodgy, but it is a solid choice for luxury accommodation in Budapest. I would recommend the hotel but advise to stay there wisely as before you know it, it could burn a hole in your pocket.

We would like to thank you personally for taking the time to share your experience and your impression of our hotel on the Tripadvisor public website. We understand your time is valuable and it means a lot to us when our guests provide us with feedback.

I was glad to read that there were many aspects of our Hotel that you apparently enjoyed; however I was sorry to note that you left the Four Seasons Budapest not feeling like you had a perfect stay due to the fact that you found our accommodation, restaurant and bar prices too high.

Thank you also for mentioning that not all our Concierge’s recommendation met your expectation. We admit there is always space for improvement and that we can benefit from our guests’ feedback. Please be assured that we have taken good notes of your comments.

I sincerely hope that you will grant us another opportunity to welcome you back to Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace should you travel to Budapest any time in the future.
