The citadel itself isn't anything special, but it is on top of the Gellert Hill, you can walk up which can be hard if you have any health issues so you can take a bus up.
Worth the visit even if only to look at the view from the top of the hill

Definitely worth a visit and walking around to take photographs. The views from the citadel, what the Hungarians call the Hungarian Statue of Liberty are just simply breathtaking. One of the best places of interest to visit. Had lunch there too of traditional Hunargian sausage, lush albeit somewhat expensive.

There's playground with nice slides half way up the hill.
Less than 30 mins to reach the top.
Nice night view from the top. There were a few stalls selling souvenirs, food, ice cream and beer.
Can be a bit dark after the sun set.

I was very confused about how to get inside and concluded that you actually can't (after walking around the building and looking on the internet at the same time).

The Liberty Statue area on the east side provides great views and should definitely be a stop. The area on the north side of the Citadel has amazing views as well so that whole stretch is worth walking.

Otherwise, the actual citadel isn't that interesting - just the vantage point it provides to view the rest of the city!

This is a must see if you’re. visiting Budapest for the first time. To get to the top of the hill take the series of steps, or take the traversing pathway which is a bit easier. Once at the top you get a wonderful view of the Danube and the city in all directions.
The Buda part of the city and St Gellért hill is where German forces and their hungarian supporters had retreated to be finally overwhelmed by the encircling Soviet army in February 1945.
Usually very busy but well worth the climb.
