Hotel Hungaria City Center
Ranked #132 of 333 Hotels in Budapest
Reviewed 17 February 2014

My girlfriend (now Fiance) and I stayed at Hotel Hungaria over New Year where I had planned to propose in Budapest on New Year's Eve. Before getting to the hotel it was almost impossible to communicate with the hotel to try and arrange the perfect trip by seeing if any extras were available.

However, upon arriving at the hotel, we were both greeted by extremely efficient and approachable staff who remained discreet about the pending engagement at all times. When we got to the room, we had automatically been upgraded to a suite and were greeted by a complimentary selection of sweets, savouries, and bottles of water. The room was spacious and spotless and provided the perfect setting for the prosposal before heading off to join in the New Year celebrations in Oktogon. I can't say how grateful I am to the staff for making the perfect trip!

The Hotel itself is ideally located near to one of the two main Train Stations if you wish to travel further afield, and two Metro Stations if you don't fancy the 25minute walk to the Danube. The Hotel was also within walking distance of Oktogon, which was one of the quieter and more informal locations in the city where locals saw in the New Year.

I would have rated the Hotel Hungaria 5/5 but all public areas are extremely tired, and the breakfast service was far from 4* rated. Tables weren't cleared at all and the breakfast buffet station was rarely restocked. We found ourselves looking elsewhere for Breakfast on subsequent mornings.

Overall, I would like to thank everybody at the Hotel Hungaria for making our trip so special and we will definitely be staying there again!

The Best Western Hungaria is old styled hotel located in a good place in Budapest.
All supporters are very likeable, courteous, and made excellent tips about the city.
The facilities included some interesting services for travellers: a spa called Bora-Bora, exchange for a good currencies, breakfest and restaurant that's includes a delicious hungarian cuisine.
The room is clean and very comfortable, because of the queen size bed and smart interior heating.
The cost-benefit is very good; highly recommended!

Over the Christmas and New Year's holiday, I booked and stayed at the Best Western Hotel. It's very conveniently located and reasonably priced. However, when I had an issue that required Imre Toth, Assistant Front Office Manager's resolution, I found him both very responsive and thoughtful in the way he handled it.

Room Tip: Note, top floors, we were on the 6th floor, come with in room coffee and tea maker. However, you ne...

We have just returned from a five day trip to Budapest and stayed at the Hungaria. As other people have commented, it's tired.

Not sure why they supplied a kettle and cups and saucers in our room as they were very reluctant to provide tea, coffee, milk and sugar and we had to ask for a supply every day. Perhaps we were expecting too much.

The view from our window was of a very dilapidated courtyard looking into offices opposite and air-conditioning units and I don't think it was any better from any other room in the hotel.

Talking of air-conditioning, we found our room stifling as we could neither control the temperature or air-conditioning as it did not appear to be working. We had no option but to leave the window open but were then subjected to the noise of the traffic and police sirens. Having said that, we probably should have brought it to the managements' attention but as it was basically somewhere to crash at the end of a couple of tiring days sightseeing and shopping, we simply put up with it.

The bed was comfortable but although it was of King Size proportions, we were given two single duvets and the sheets barely fitted. Also, apart from being able to switch on the main light at the entrance door, the headboard also housed an off-centre light switch for that purpose. Consequently, as I tried to cuddle up to my husband, my pillow kept switching on the main light through all hours of the night.

I really feel like a moaning Minny but in an effort to find a socket to plug in my electric hot brush, I located one behind the bedside cabinet but was rather shocked to find that the carpet was a completely different colour, not from wear and tear, but thick dust. I dread to think what it was like under the bed.

Perhaps we were unlucky on this occasion as we only sampled one room out of a possible 400+.

Budapest is an interesting city steeped in history with beautiful architecture and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend a visit, (or indeed, pay a return visit ourselves), but would suggest researching some of the smaller hotels which hopefully pay more attention to detail.

Thank you for your comment regarding your recent stay at our property.
On behalf of our entire team, I would like to apologize for not exceeding your expectations. Your satisfaction is important to us and we will be using the feedback you gave us to implement improvements to ensure we offer a better experience for guests in the future.
Please be informed that by the Best Western specifications we provide coffe and tea making facilities on request in our guest rooms and in the case of a request we are more than happy to provide this service even if there is a need every day.
By the view we have two different kind of rooms: there are rooms facing to the street and there are rooms facing to the backyard (these are more quiet of course). Unfortunately the shape of the surrounding buildings is not depending on us, we can only advise the owners of them to keep them in good shape.
Regarding the air conditioning: in January the air-conditioning system is not working, usually our guests don't want to cool their rooms, they enjoy the heating system at this period. We are really sorry that you haven't informed us about your feelings on the spot, we would have done our best to provide you another room, perhaps it would have been a solution.
Nevertheless I hope that you will consider staying with us again so that we can have another chance to provide you with a superior experience.
Sincerely,
Bela Csapo

This hotel is completely basic, nice reception but the corridors and rooms are old! It done the job the beds were comfortable. We spent very little time in the rooms.

They don't do room service and the bar closes at 11pm over the weekend, it says 2am on the website.

Great and good looking hotel from the outside and in the lobby. With a good location. I was in a single room which was very small and narrow, fortunately only for one night. The room was dark, he looked old and poorly maintained, needs repair.

Thank you for commenting regarding your recent stay in our property.
In the name of our staff please receive our apology for not exceeding your expectations. The single room is only for one person that's why its size is not big but hopefully its comfortable for one guest. We are selling two bedded rooms for single use as well, next time it would be a solution for your request.
I hope that you will consider staying with us again so that we can have another chance to provide you with a superior experience.

Best Western Hungaria hotel is well located, very near to Keleti railway station.Metro station is very near, also a big shopping mall Arena Plaza.
I have seen three types of the rooms: Imperial suite is wonderful, big and with grat view, and it is situated on the first floor. On the same floor, they are very bad and small rooms without deposit box. But if you are persistant you might get a better room with two bathrooms also on the first floor.
Hotel is clean, breakfast is OK early in the morning when you can find and take fresh cakes.

Room Tip: Ask for Imperial suite, you will not regret.

Thank you for your opinion regarding your recent stay in our property.
We're glad that you were satisfied mostly with our services. Just for your information: we have several types of rooms on the first floor and on the other floors from the single rooms to the suites but no one of them have two bathrooms. We have some Junior Suites in which you find a bathroom and separate toilet. For those guest who don't have safety deposit box in their room we recommend to use the safe service at the Reception (both are free of charge and available 24/7).
I hope you'll return soon to us.
