Not the cleanest, very busy and so touristy it took away from the authentic atmosphere that I think is meant to be there. The World Cup was playing and plastic sun loungers lined the outside baths. Felt more like an all inclusive holiday than a traditional thermal spa. Despite this, good to say you’ve been as it is one of the hot spots of the city, but wouldn’t return

We spent about 3 hours here chilling. There are about 15 pools but felt more like 50. Great outdoor big warm spa pools with waterfall and water jets to do your back. Super indoor pools.

All this in stunning architecture. A touch of fallen grandure perhaps but wonderful for all that.

There are other baths but this was great. We popped into the nearby zoo afterwards.

We visited Budapest on our mini-moon and we had such little time to plan, so we arrived unorganised and with zero knowledge on what was to do and where you could go.
One of the attractions I knew about was the thermal baths. whilst I was chilling in the hotel room I did some research and I found a lot of it very uninformative, just a compliment or a complaint. Hopefully this helps you have an overview on the szechenyi baths.

We pre-booked our visit online which come with two private cabins (only one needed really). Too note, the cabins can be oversold so you could end up having to use a locker, personally I don’t see a problem with that unless you bring lots of items with you (lockers are similar size to uk leisure centres), however, we left valuables and belongings by our sun beds for hours and nothing was taken.

We entered via the entrance opposite the circus, turned right and walked towards the help desk, 3 or 4 smiling women were serving, one checked our email, issued us with two locker keys which wrap around your wrist and then directed us to where the cabins were, simple. we then got to a locker finder where a member of staff was standing on hand to assist users to find there lockers or cabins. I thought this was a great touch.

We found our cabin easily, changed and trotted off to find some thermal baths. I took my sliders (flip flops), my wife went bare foot, it’s not a necessity just choice.

We found a map and made our decisions on where to go and started to scout out the inside. There was so many pools to choose from, all different temperatures. We tried many of them out and thoroughly enjoyed them.

We also tried the beer spa out costing around 15000huf (7500huf per person), this was a 45 minute bath, with unlimited self serving beer. Me and my wife gave it a shot and loved it, so much fun and it does get you rather tipsy.

We met a local and he was charming, he gave us some information on how to use the thermal baths, what order to use them and also some history on Hungary which was great to listen to.

We went back to our cabins and grabbed our belongings and found a couple of sun beds. We then spent the final hours in the outdoor pools watching the World Cup which was a great experience.

Important info to note.
The baths were clean, there is a foot bath when you enter the indoor pool halls and the outdoor pools.

The signage isn’t brilliant but you can work it out soon enough.

The indoor thermal pools are open until the end, it’s only the massages and extra costing areas that close.

We arrived just before 4pm and the place was busy, we couldn’t get a sunbed but you don’t necessarily need one, there are benches and floor space to relax until one becomes available, we did get one after our first hour or two in the thermals.

Drinks and food are fairly priced.

Staff are friendly and helpful.

You can pre book massages or book on the day.

Overall we had a great experience, it was our favourite part of our time away.

Hope this helps

The whole place was dirty - paint hanging off the walls, a funny smell throughout and bits floating in the large pool. When entering, there’s barely any signposts so it’s unclear where the men and women’s changing rooms are. There are more lockers upstairs, which again, aren’t clearly signposted and was even harder to find as everyone else didnt have a clue where they were going. I wouldn’t recommend coming here - many people I’ve spoken to said it’s better to go to the smaller ones, as they are better looked after and less crowded.

When visiting in Budapest, make sure you have local Forint. Generally euros are not widely accepted, if accepted you get lousy rates. Ensure you change at a valid money changer, as bigger shopping districts is safest but be mindful they extract a sales commission.

To get there, we took the metro to Szechenyi furdo station. A single one way ticket costs 700 Forint each. Be sure to validate your ticket at entrance of station. They are conductors who check your tickets, so really, go buy one okay!

We went towards the evening whereby the crowd was lesser. Tickets go at 5500 Forint per adult and must come with a locker. Locker rooms and open shower rooms are open to both men and women. So the shy ones might want to just towel off after and shower properly back at your hotel.

They give you a wrist band which you can use to tag open and tag lock your locker. You can choose any empty ones. Make sure you bring your own towel if you are not prepared to rent one there. They also have wooden changing rooms, shared hair dryer and even a swimsuit spinner/dryer.

You are expected to do a quick shower before you hop into the pool. After all, it is a shared pool for public - a little bit like Japanese onsen prep. The indoor pools have temps ranging from 20-40 degrees. Might want to soak in lower temp ones before trying the warmer ones. These pools are smaller inside. But there are 2 big soak pools outside. One is about 30 degrees at one end. Both soak pools are separated by a middle swimming pool. On the other end, they have a pool filled with jacuzzis. Middle portion of the pool has a "group spinner". Dive in there for some group fun.

After a day of walking to tourist sites, the thermal pools are a relief to the whole body. Apparently they have medicinal properties. Enjoy.
