“Good enough for 2 nights!”
Reviewed 16 July 2013

I booked this hotel because I didn't want the hassle of lugging my luggage around after hopping off the train in Budapest. It's literally (and slightly diagonally) across the road from the main train station. However, there are building/construction works around the station at this time so you'll most likely exit the train station on the left hand side, and you would walk around to the front and then cross the road. (A side note: Google Maps somehow took into consideration the construction works, and actually showed me the path to take. So just double check beforehand.) Look for the green sign with white writing. When you enter the building, there is a security guard there and you will take the lift to the 5th floor to reach the hotel's reception.

Fast food joints, supermarkets, a currency change place are close by. The area is slightly dodgy at night as there were homeless people, and men lurking around. That said, being a girl and travelling on my own, it wasn't too bad for me when making my way back to the hotel; just don't talk to anyone and keep looking straight ahead :)

The hotel itself is adequate. Nice and helpful staff. Clean rooms - although my bathroom needed some refurnishing as there were cracks in the tiles. A good selection of food at breakfast. Good wi-fi reception. I got a reasonable last minute deal so I paid 48 Euros per night. One minor comment is that when I made the booking, I was asked to select whether I wanted twin beds or a double bed. I chose a double bed. However, it turned out to be twin beds pushed together - which is apparently common in Europe. But this was not a huge bother to me.

I would stay here again purely based on location, and provided I can get a cheap deal.

Staying here once again, unfortunately, access is restricted thanks to the continuing works outside and between it & Keleti station. Friendly staff and welcome. Rooms are comfortable and there is wi-fi available in rooms. Staff are helpful, especially if asked for assistance to get somewhere, purchase something specific and even to get something done in the room. The Housekeeper was smiling and very friendly and her assistance appreciated. The Breakfast staff also always smiling and doing what they can, even if English is something they know little of they listen intently and pick up on one or two words and know what you are talking about. Especially helpful when they know one has a gluten intolerance. They were prepared for me! That sort of personalised service does not happen very often. During this trip, so far, twice in 5 weeks! It is not five star but the friendliness and staff are! Laundry needed to be done and back as soon as possible because my departure was after 2 nights, so they had it done and returned in a matter of hours. Also needed a form printed and it was no trouble and hopefully in the morning it can be scanned as well.
Just impressed because they always try very hard to satisfy their guests. Congratulations to all staff I have had dealings with as they were fabulous.

Room Tip: rear rooms are so quiet when windows closed. Non-Smoking rooms.

Take care if going out at night and keep an eye on anyone who appears to be over friendly as they are very likely not. A number of occasions we were approached by pick pockets but this was very late at night. There is a lot of building work being done around the rail station which is only 100 metres from the hotel. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful

I have stayed twice in this hotel in September 2011 and 2012 and on both occasions I did so because I arrived in Budapest by train at the Keleti station. After the journey I wanted to "hit the hay" quickly and without much delay which I was able to do as the station is 2 minutes walk away. In September 2012 my room faced the station and I could see the statues of the famous English inventors, James Watt and George Stephenson framing the station entranceway (see photo).
Because of the low tariff, it is attractive to groups of young people, but the hotel staff gently dampened their exuberance at night.
Another handy feature is it closeness to a hop-on hop-off bus stop which is great for seeing Budapest. The stop is in front of a neighbouring swankier hotel which has good restaurant, though the waiters will try for an additional tip on top of the 10% service charge added to the bill. There is also a gypsy restaurant down one of the side streets across the road and interesting bistros around the corner. The area at night may not be suitable for your maiden aunt. Additionally the authorities seem to be taking years to finish the roadworks outside the hotel.
Baross's included breakfast is filling and adequate. The rooms have wooden furniture somewhat reminiscent of the silky oak furniture where I live.
There are a choice of window rooms facing the street (and the station) or rooms facing the central courtyard from which there can be sounds from other younger guests if they carouse on their balcony.
Wifi is free, an essential offering of any hotel nowadays.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the internal courtyard could be noisier.

Location: 3 mins walk from train station (keleti). Has grocery, budget king, McDonald's, KFC and a 24-hr convenient store within the 80m radius. A bit of a far walk from the 1st known tourist spot (about 10 mins) but you can just take the metro (though I prefer to walk since you'll see a lot of things).

Breakfast: same everyday but for e price of the room inclusive of breakfast, who am I to complain. They have cereal, diff breads and spreads, cheese, ham, sausage, coffee, juice.

Staff: we were there when the weather was hot and was placed in the corner top room with close to no wifi and Aircon was not functioning. The following day, after talking to e reception, we were transferred to a much nicer room on the 4th floor.

Room: I don't like the corner room on the 6th floor as it is already the roof. avoid it if possible since it is not ok to open the window, it is not the normal straight type but an attic type when it is almost like part of the roof. But transferring to the 4th floor facing the insides is simply great. Not a 4 or 5 star but ok for 3 star. Clean enough as well.

Wifi - free but not that fast.

Room Tip: Choose the ones facing the inner sides or at least not faing the street since it is noisy with polic...

We had a giant room that had 4 beds in it. The bathroom was around the corner and the shower had poor drainage. It actually drained right onto the floor with some water going right to the door where you could see some water damage. The wooden floor in the bedroom could use a good sweeping. Other that this, our stay was ok. The beds were comfortable, there was a/c, the food was good. It is close to the metro too. Watch out for local taxes!!!!! Any time you are traveling in Europe, ask if there are any local hotel taxes you will need to pay.

I booked on the internet. Passed through Budapest on the way to Romania and checked out the hotel having read some not too great comments about it. Room I was shown looked fine.
The room I was given on the 4th floor when I checked in two weeks later was not good. Stained filthy carpet, shower curtain unsavoury. I had to cover the pillow with a towel, so old it was smelly.
Shifted rooms the next day...much better.
The beds are very hard indeed and pillows in both rooms urgently needed replacing.
I gave the location a good rating as I did want to be near Budapest Keleti.

Room Tip: Don't settle for a dirty room
