Don't stay at the Gellert if you want 'spin' or frills. But if you want genuine style and elegance of old Hungary, this is the place to stay. Riveting.
And, wow it would be difficult to beat the charm of ancient Budapest.
Just returned from a week in the Gellert, 2nd floor room overlooking the wonderous Danube. Travelled alone. Explored every day, buses and trams, river trips, took the waters, ate out in town and on the hotel's brasserie terrace.
Friendly staff, good welcome. Met the guest relations manager Mihaly Vasony, kindness itself.
One day the hotel will be modernised. Hope there are not too many frills.

We had an enjoyable three day stay in June. The hotel has an enviable location overlooking the Danube and is well placed for both walking and public transport. We booked a superior river-view room and were rewarded by the huge "Andrew Lloyd Webber" room, which has apparently been used by the great man on a couple of occasions. It had been refurbished to a high standard and had a small balcony. Despite the space and quality fittings, it had a drab appearance because of the dowdy colour scheme of the bed coverings. We like a hotel with a comfortable lounge bar but the bar at the Gellert was just a little kiosk off the entrance lobby and, although there were comfortable seats in the lobby, it was not the best place to relax with a drink. Service in the dining room at breakfast was disorganised. Both the tea and coffee were lukewarm and the coffee machine ran dry on one occasion. Each guest had to collect his/her own hot drink which meant a great deal of coming and going - a health and safety issue perhaps?
We enjoyed using both the indoor and outdoor thermal pools, although they are small compared with others in the city.
We were curious as to why the Reception was, with one exception, staffed solely by male staff during our stay. They were all courteous and helpful but it seemed slightly odd not to see lady receptionists.

Room Tip: River view rooms do come with noise from trams and other traffic but, if you don't mind this, th...

It's the baths that make the difference. Not the bathrooms in the hotel (which would be a disappointment even in a cheap B&B in Folkestone) but the beautiful, atmospheric, thermal baths next door, whose entry is included in the room price. In fact the main reason for staying here would have to be those thermal baths - and the convenience of being able to walk straight there, half-naked, from your room.
True, the location is stupendous, right next to the Danube, at the convergence of several trams routes, and almost on top of the metro station on the shiny new Line 4. The hotel exudes olde-worlde charm from the moment one enters the lobby, and is full of professional, efficient, and consistently friendly staff right through from the Receptionists to the cleaners. The breakfast buffet is also excellent - with something for everyone.
The problem, however, is the rooms. I stayed on the top floor, in what I assume was one of the cheaper rooms (not surprising at the price I paid). The room was clean, the bed was comfortable, and the TV was modern - but nothing else was. In fact it was like one of those hotels you find in France, with a poky, dated shower-and-sink, and a little loo cubicle elsewhere. There was no air-con, which in view of the range of adult movies available on the hotel's entertainment system, seemed unfortunate to say the least. In fact the only sign in the rooms that this was an upmarket hotel was the fact that (just like in the Hilton) you had to pay for the WIFI (though it is free downstairs).
That said, although the rooms lacked a certain 'wow-factor' (to say the least), I slept well. A visit to the baths forgave, like baptism, all the hotel's sins, and the the prompt vigilance of the cleaning staff who told the receptionist, within seconds of me leaving the room, that I'd left my mobile charger behind, made sure I left with a smile on my face and a desire to return.

Room Tip: The rooms are not a high point of this hotel!

Difficult to rate a hotel like this. Once upon a time, "The Hotel Gellért" must have been a proud and fancy hotel. If you see the hotel from a distance the exterior still looks very promising. However, the moment you step into your rooms, you will see that the hotel has not been renovated since 30 or 40 years. Instead of running a professional renovation, they tried to just cover up the many critical spots whenever a disaster happened. Even I could have done a better job! You can not see this on their website pictures nor on they brochures.
Towels and sheets were clean in my room but our daughter's bed had a hair string left on the pillow. Rooms we stayed. 104 ("suite" they call it but it's just roomy and not fresh at all). Switched to room 312 (drainage system stank). Finally moved to room 215 (did not stink but the air conditioner did not work well so it was terribly hot in the room while the outside temperature was 40 degrees C). Daughter room 305 ( found a hair string in her pillow)

The most disappointing part was that the hotel closed down the "Direct" entrance to the SPA with the thermal water baths. Instead of letting the guests go down directly to the baths, you have to get in from the "public" entrance and go through a maze (laberinth) to get to the beautiful bath. The bath is probably now owned by the state or by another company. This is why you can not go into the baths like before.

The beautiful bath is hidden and is very difficult to find. I nearly gave up. But this bath is really worth trying. You must look for it. There is a non see through glass door that hides the bath so you will most probably miss it if you don't know how to get there. The staff at the bath are not well educated and can not help much. The signs at the bath are difficult to understand. But if you are able to finally find this bath and sit and meditate in this thermal bath and go back to the hotel in your "bathrobe", you must think that it was worth staying at this hotel. The fact that you can go to the bath and come back in your bathrobe to this hotel is the highlight of this hotel. It takes patience to find it but it is a very nice bath.

Another good thing about this hotel is that they have the "Santevita" Health and Beauty on the ground floor (reception floor). There is one masseur with a shaved head who hardly speaks English but is a most professional and intuitive masseur. He can feel where you need the treatment so you don't have to explain anything. Highly recommend him! And if you want to have your hair set to go to the opera or a fancy dinner, a hairdresser named "Attila" did a great job making my hair look like a model ready to have some photo sessions. He washes your hair and blow dries it and can set it for you too if you ask him to do so. In my case, I showed him a picture of how I want it done and he fixed it exactly as in the picture. Very satisfied. the price was also much cheaper than in Sweden (apprx 16-18 Eur).

I did not like the attitude of the receptionist at the Thai massage in the hotel/SPA. She was unfriendly. The friseur "Attila" recommended the facial massage at the SPA located down stairs at the SPA entrance ground floor.

At the back of the hotel, you can find a dm drogstore which is really handy and across the street there is a supermarket where you can buy water and fruits etc. It was also very convenient. The tram and also the metro (underground) is right at your feet. If you're staying longer I would buy a 10 ticket pack at the metro station. Location is very good!

The concierge was kind. She seemed over loaded with work so she did not have the "capacity" to come up with unique customized ideas but I could see and feel that she was doing really her best.

Reception: Some were very attentive and some were not. Some receptionists were kinder than the others. Most of the receptionists were very friendly.

Breakfast: Go there between 7 and 8. Earlier the better. They only fill up with bad stuff so you need to be there early to be able to pick the first round. The mushrooms were nice and also the mini croissants. Coffee was also OK. A kind young lady was there to tidy up and help. The male workers were not so efficient and running around spreading stressful energy.

Cleaning: Basic cleaning. They need to do a "deep cleaning". Dusty air.

The prices were affordable compare to "The Four Seasons".

Room Tip: room 215 and room 117 had better bathrooms. (we looked at 117 and lived in 214). Room 215 had a view...

This hotel located just by the river, we had a room overlooking the bridge and river. Very good location with trams to other tourist location such as the Buda castle, Fisherman Bastion and St Matthias church.
Services are good for European standard, requested for hot water n cup for making tea and it arrived within 5-10mins.
Breakfast buffet spread was good, choices of hot and cold dishes.
The only drawback is the room is kinda old, lack of maintenance. Maybe it need more maintenance and renovation to restore it back to the glory.
There is another plus point, you can enter to Gellert Spa directly from the hotel.
Overall good experience.

Breakfast was very good,

Situated right on the Danube this place has an amazing atmosphere and sense of History. Spa is top notch and authentic, Hotel may be a little dated and if you can get past the pretentious Russian oligarch guests the place is awesome. Friendly staff. Nostalgic feeling of a by gone era.
