Danubius Hotel Gellert
Ranked #101 of 336 Hotels in Budapest
Reviewed 5 July 2014

The free, direct access to the Gellert Baths is the selling point for this hotel (The hotel and baths are connected by a bridge). The baths are a prime example of Art Nouveau architecture, with beautiful stained glass and mosaics (the only other baths that even remotely come close are Szechenyi baths around Varosliget, further afield). The hotel itself was a grand hotel in its hey day, apparently, the maharaja graced it with his presence, way back when. Now it offers rather basic amenities which are reminiscent of the days of the iron curtain. Little renovation has been performed: There is no air conditioning which can be a bit of a challenge for pampered tourists expecting more; the breakfasts are also quite modest and not worthy of writing home about. The bathroom is rather old in design but has a bidet. No sleek designer hardware here, this is not Germany, and that's okay. The location, however, is sublime and most major sites are walking distance. You get a view of the Danube or a view of lush Buda Hill. Szabadsag hid/bridge is right in front of the hotel, leading to Pest. Nagycsarnok, the Great Market Hall is at the other end of the bridge on your right (in case you decided to pass on breakfast options at the hotel or wanted to acquire your necessary souvenir sachet of a variety of paprikas). Vaci Utca, the ever-so-popular pedestrian street with its many restaurants, cafes, shops are past the bridge on your left. On the Buda side, you have access to most main tourist attractions such as Budavari Palota, Halaszbastya (Fisherman's Bastion), St. Matthias and so on. You could walk to the citadel on the buda side in 8 minutes. The rest of the Buda side attractions are about 20 minutes away. The Pest side attractions start at the end of the bridge with Nagycsarnok and Vaci utca 5 minutes away, Iparmuveszeti Museum is about 17 minutes away, Nagy Zsinagoga (the Great Synagogue) is about 20 minutes away. For places like Varosliget and Margit Sziget you can take public transit which is readily accessible with a streetcar stop right in front of the hotel. If you do not drive and don't want to spend too much money but still want to feel surrounded by history, this hotel is a fantastic option. I would definitely stay here again. The service was friendly. Cleaning staff did not speak English, which was a bit of a challenge, but they were highly motivated to make things work calling upon other staff to provide translation services. I have yet to meet a unilingual Hungarian so the more languages you speak the higher the likelihood that someone will understand you (many Hungarians speak German, French or Russian, if not English. The older generation, mostly speaks Russian). There is a convenience store right next to the hotel which sells everything from adaptors to sandwiches to toothbrushes to Scotch whiskey. I would definitely stay here again. Buy yourself a Budapest card as soon as you arrive and take advantage of all the wonderful sites around you.

Room Tip: Specify whether you prefer a view on the Danube (my preference) or a view on lush, green Buda Hill...

We loved our stay at the Gellert but you do need to be prepared for basic amenities in the room and an atmosphere of faded glory. We had booked a more expensive balcony room and were not disappointed in the spaciousness of the room, the comfortable chairs and the fabulous view from our balcony. We did need to order more pillows for the bed and the bathroom looked like it had been last renovated in the60s.
Breakfast was good, the omelette was so big it would feed a family of four. We loved the grandeur of the public areas, the doormen were polite and helpful and we loved the easy access to the fabulous baths. What a great way to relax after a day of intensive sightseeing.
Best of all we loved sunset drinks on our own little balcony watching the world go by.

Room Tip: Book a balcony room

4 lumps in a case do not a pillow make. That about sums this place up. A grand old place like this will cost zillions to renovate, but meanwhile there are things they could do. Breakfast is chaotic (not enough trained staff to clear tables for the waves of guests) and we ended up sitting at a dirty cloth and clearing plates ourselves. And in the middle of summer, when the central market is full of the most delicious tomatoes, cherries and strawberries, there were none on offer - I only tinned fruit!
The rooms could have decent toiletries and a shower cap; drains and vents can and should be clean; vases of single flowers could have fresh water and a flower to replace rotting ones - in the FOYER!!! In short, client service and attention to the basics would make the Gellert bearable. Only a thorough makeover of the rooms can rescue it from rejection even by relatively un-fussy guests.

Staying at the Hotel Gellert is like stepping back in time, as in the movie "The Shining". The lobby and public areas, decor and furnishings are well preserved and maintained with historic accuracy. The rooms however (judging by ours) were passed by for several renovation cycles. There is no air conditioning in the rooms, (strange for a Hotel which is built atop thermal springs,) but we were given a rotating floor fan for the duration of our stay. The plumbing is about up to communist era standards. The thermal baths and outdoor pool are very nicely done, but you only get one free admittance per stay. The location is excellent for walking the Liberty Bridge to Pest, hopping on the Trams to reach any destination on the Buda Embankment, Pest Embankment, City Center or most attractions, and the new Subway Line's futuristic station is just across the street. The breakfast buffet is also excellent. Stay once (in mild weather) for the experience.

Room Tip: Look the room over well before accepting it. Avoid southern window orientation in warm weather.

If you want to experience Old World grandeur, the Gellert is the perfect place to stay. We were fortunate to be upgraded to the Richard Nixon Room, a huge chamber with a large foyer, big bathroom and a lovely balcony overlooking the Danube. Our son's room, next to ours was equally spacious. Silk wallpaper, an antique armoire, wing-back chairs and a lovely sitting area completed the feeling of elegance. The beautiful reception area has a fountain surrounded by orchids (in June anyway) and plenty of comfortable seating. Reception staff is multi-lingual, knowledgable, efficient, and very nice. The cafe off the lobby and the terraces are lovely places to enjoy tea or something stronger. The pastries at the Gellert (and everywhere in Buda and Pest are incredible.) The fabulous stained glass continues for four floors up the grand staircase telling a myth. (Wish I had a translation). Ornate carving and gilt-work, antique mirrors, and decorative screens and wordwork abound. Yes, the carpet is a bit worn in spots - ignore that! Everything else is magical, so focus on the exquisite! The main dining room is large and gracious - with yet more views of the Danube and its remarkable bridges. The breakfast buffet is included in the room and has an astounding selection - eat well and skip lunch! It's a buffet, so there are few servers, you get your own coffee, etc. Easy and efficient - and very tasty! The baths are exquisite with ornate tile work - and surprise! a wave-making machine in the outdoor pool. The Hotel was built over and around thermal baths used for healing powers for ages. (Saint Gellert started it all.) One entry is included in your stay (half price for additonal swims) and the ease of changing in your room and using the Hotel's plush bathrobe to wander down to the spa makes staying here all the more worthwhile. Odd that you have to wear a shower cap in the indoor pool - which they give you-- tying your hair up in a ponytail is not enough. Several pools from chilly to very warm indoors and out. A sauna on the upper deck has an ice bath next to it. Gellert is ideally located, too. A brand new metro stop can zip you under the Danube, trams stop at the front door to take you in any direction, and a 5-minute stroll across Independence Bridge takes you to the huge market (food, lace, crafts) and to the start of Vaci Utca, a bustling shopping / eating /walking street. Stay at the Gellert to enjoy life and travel as it once was! I will be back as soon as I possibly can. Much thanks to the hotel staff for a truly remarkable stay in exceptional elegance.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the Danube are large with prettiest views. Great black-out curtains. Ours had soundproo...

Don't stay at the Gellert if you want 'spin' or frills. But if you want genuine style and elegance of old Hungary, this is the place to stay. Riveting.
And, wow it would be difficult to beat the charm of ancient Budapest.
Just returned from a week in the Gellert, 2nd floor room overlooking the wonderous Danube. Travelled alone. Explored every day, buses and trams, river trips, took the waters, ate out in town and on the hotel's brasserie terrace.
Friendly staff, good welcome. Met the guest relations manager Mihaly Vasony, kindness itself.
One day the hotel will be modernised. Hope there are not too many frills.

We had an enjoyable three day stay in June. The hotel has an enviable location overlooking the Danube and is well placed for both walking and public transport. We booked a superior river-view room and were rewarded by the huge "Andrew Lloyd Webber" room, which has apparently been used by the great man on a couple of occasions. It had been refurbished to a high standard and had a small balcony. Despite the space and quality fittings, it had a drab appearance because of the dowdy colour scheme of the bed coverings. We like a hotel with a comfortable lounge bar but the bar at the Gellert was just a little kiosk off the entrance lobby and, although there were comfortable seats in the lobby, it was not the best place to relax with a drink. Service in the dining room at breakfast was disorganised. Both the tea and coffee were lukewarm and the coffee machine ran dry on one occasion. Each guest had to collect his/her own hot drink which meant a great deal of coming and going - a health and safety issue perhaps?
We enjoyed using both the indoor and outdoor thermal pools, although they are small compared with others in the city.
We were curious as to why the Reception was, with one exception, staffed solely by male staff during our stay. They were all courteous and helpful but it seemed slightly odd not to see lady receptionists.

Room Tip: River view rooms do come with noise from trams and other traffic but, if you don't mind this, th...
