The hotel's old style look is just what I expected, also friendly service was there almost all the time except the spa however lacking a/c costed us a one night sleep, next morning I went down to reception asked for the duty manager, Peter ( not the d.m ) came and quickly resolved the problem by upgrading us to a river view room which had a/c, as a hotelier I can say that this showed great example of empowerment, this is what guests want, quick resolution to problems, also I really enjoyed breakfasts and location is very good. The rooms are old, Wi-Fi works good everywhere in the hotel however I must say it is a great ambience with all those retro things

This hotel is gorgeous and just what you'd expect from staying in a 4* hotel and period building.

Classic in style and just what you need with air-con, towels, toiletries, free wifi, dressing gowns, access to the attached spa etc.

I cant sing the praises of this place enough, it really is a case of you get what you pay for, and to be honest you don't may alot more for here than you would for any of the run of the mill apartments in Budapest -it worked out an extra £15pp for me and the boyfriend for here rather than the run of the mill apartment we were considering.
I would definitely say you get value for money here!

Service wise, the staff are really great and cannot do enough for you, I don't think I had to wait for anything during my stay- be that in the bar, restaurant, spa or at reception.

Talking of the bar- its worth a visit if only to see the beautiful Art Nouveau style of it!

The Brasserie next door is worth a visit, and if you wish to add your bill to your room tab you can, also NB if you have a Budapest card, you get a discount here.

You also get a discount in the Panoramic Terrace restaurant with your Budapest card which is useful. Re the restaurant, it was always busy, so be braced for this. Note this also tells you how great it is, as people not staying at the hotel want to eat here too...

Views wise, definitely ask for a river view- chances are you will get it, same goes for wanting a smoking room, or not!

Room Tip: Ask for a river view- we had 208 which was spot on!

Proper old style hotel.
All interior is old style.
You step through the doors and you feel like you are in the 80-90's.
The light switches, the doors, the shower, everything very dated.
But not in the bad way!
If you are not too fusy or crazy for modern style, if You want to have a glimpse of how luxury used to be, I would highly recommend thia hotel.
Even though the interior ia dated, the hotel looks awesome. Got the Gellert Bath right next door.
Location is amazing.
Breakfast is overwhelming with ons of selection and they are all tasty.
And most importantly the service is 5 star!
(Pls note, due to the fact that the building is like a heritage site, there are only mobile a/c in the rooms. And not in all of them. So make sure....).

From the moment I crossed the bridge and saw the hotel I was mesmerized by the architecture.
The location is prime, right on the Danube. The front desk staff were personable and accommodating , Telling me that I had a Danube facing room with breakfast and Gourmet dinner included " wow for $400 US Dollars" for 3 nights. The restaurant staff was excellent, as was the food, my wine glass filled almost after every sip.
As others have said " go before renovations are done , and this true gem is converted into something beyond the reach of most travelers." The spa is also first class. I have had the privilege to visit 32 countries and this Hotel is in my top 3.

I stayed at the end of july for 3 nights at the Gellert. I was impressed by the look of the hotel and thought that I could cope with an outdated room......not true, my single room (375) was located on the 3rd floor. Furniture and fittings had lost their charm for quite some time already. Absence of airco resulted in tropical inside temperatures and the open window gave way to a lot of noise during the night. Especially the ongoing sound of plastic containers being handled in the court yard and trams squealing through the curved rails as well as bypassers talking, screaming or singing kept me out of sleep. Breakfast (included) looked nice but lacked fresh juice, fresh fruit and seemed made up of mostly canned and conserved food.

Service however was friendly and the (old) thermal bathing facilities made up for some of the discomfort.

Dear cosmashoefnagels,

We are pleased that you have chosen to stay in our Danubius Hotel Gellért and we thank you for taking the time for a feedback on TripAdvisor.

I am very sorry I did not have the pleasure meeting you personally because I would have definitely offered you other room options. Yes it was unusually hot, but we have rooms overloking the hillside with no noise at all and much cooler.

We appreciate to read your comment "breakfast looked nice...service however was friendly"

Hopefully we will have the pleasure to welcome you again in the GELLÉRT, and I promise to help to find a more suitable room for you.

We stayed here from 13 - 17th July and were very happy with just about everything. Check-in was made easy by the friendly, smiling staff. Even a few words of Hungarian can be a daunting task for the speaker of English, so it was just as well that everyone... Everyone... we had dealings with at the hotel, from management to cleaning staff, spoke English well enough to make us, once again, ashamed at our own inadequasies when it comes to The Gift Of Tongues. Much has been made in previous reviews of a need to update and upgrade this hotel. Yeah, OK, it could do with a little refurbishment {couldn't we all?} but I hope any developments in this area will be sympathetic to what has gone before because, despite any shortcomings, this is still a magnificent and very comfortable structure. Please, Danubius, don't change much...
With temperatures well into the 30s {even at night} a portable air conditioning unit was a welcome addition to our room.
Hotel Gellert also run a welcoming cafe just outside {and to your left as you're looking into the hotel from outside the main entrance, the coffee and cakes make a welcome addition to any afternoon, and the staff, once again, tend to smile a lot {special mention of Horvath úr, a gentleman not without a sense of humour!} as well as a more formal restaurant on the other side of the courtyard. Mention should be made also of the baths which, while no longer actually a part of the hotel, can nontheless still be accessed from within the hotel and enjoy an arragement with Danubius which allows hotel guests a one-off free access and further half-price entrance. Once again, the baths are a touch faded, but still spectacular. The staff here, too, are friendly and approachable. All in all an enjoyable stay and one very definitely for a return visit.

Room Tip: Select the best room you can, it's worth the stretch, and you'll be glad you did.

Arrived late at night to be offered a much appreciated upgrade to a deluxe suite. What an enormous and beautiful room, with panoramic views across the Danube. Made me feel a bit like I was on set of The Great Gatsby. Everything was spotless and very comfortable, a real 'home from home'. Breakfast was excellent with a wide selection of pastries, cheese, meats, fruits and cooked breakfast. Staff throughout the hotel were professional and courteous, nothing seemed to be too much trouble. Easy access to the spa was the icing on the cake, being able to wander down in bathrobes made it a relaxing and memorable experience. This is a beautiful, classically elegant hotel, which I wouldn't hesitate to stay in again and would highly recommend to friends.
