“Great hotel and service”
Reviewed 7 August 2012

Location: Right in the city centre, even if not the closest hotel to the Chain Bridge. Anyway, the hotel is located at just few steps from the metro and the tram stops, they pass every minute so you will have no problems in moving everywhere around the city. Don't miss a visit to the sunday little market near the hotel.
Room: we had a standard room, it was very big and spacious, one of the biggest I ever stayed in. Forniture design is deco style. The elegant bathroom is very, very spacious too, there are both shower and bath tub. They change bathrobe and towels everyday if you request it (we stayed only two nights so we choose not to have them changed).
Lobby and common spaces: all is very elegant and astonishing, with huge sky windows and marble everywhere.
Breakfast: very complete and satisfying, with great choice of cakes, fruit and also smoked fish (delicious).
SPA: the swimming pool is very elegant and big as you can see in the website pictures, but the water temperature was too cold so we did not use it. When I asked to increase the water temperature, they replied it was 30 degrees, but nobody was having a bath so I suppose they were cold as well as me. Anyway, the spa rooms are clean and functional, there are two little jacuzzi whirlpools, steam bath and turkish bath.
Service: staff is always very attentive and professional.
Value for price: we got a promotional rate that was terrific, so the value for price was amazing.

Budapest was hot and humid this July. Beautiful city but didn't spend as much time outside due to the heat of the day. Corinthia is a grande historic looking hotel. The surrounding area is not as trendy or picturesque as the Kempinsky by the river but I don't think the Kempinsky has a full size spa with indoor Pool, Jacuzzi, Sauna wet and dry all included with your hotel stay. Even the prices for massages were reasonable for Europe and for a 5 star.

My room had the executive club benefit, you check up in a special area upstairs and you have access to the club with free drink and snacks etc all day basically. This was nice my only comment is breakfast in the club wasn't so great due to the limited size. I didn't ask if I could eat breakfast in the main area downstairs so it might be an option.

The room was nice, the bed was very comfortable, the TV sucked. A small CRT TV, I forgotten these things existed. Really for 2012 for a hotel of this level, it should all be flat screens. Also with the Suite, there was no TV in the sitting room, this is pretty unacceptable as well. Really if they would remedy these two things then I wouldn't have much of a gripe at all. I did use the Jacuzzi and Sauna at the spa and found it to be a relaxing time.

Overall I would definitely recommend this as a nice alternative to the hotels on the river due to the spa and other amenities.

Room Tip: I didn't find the Suite worthwhile as there was no TV in the actually sitting part however there...

As the vast majority of reviews have stated this is an excellent hotel to stay in. After a long day sightseeing the hotel offers fantastic facilities (jacuzzi, sauna, swimming pool). The staff are very helpful and friendly and another treat is having breakfast in the Atrium (brilliant selection available too).
The hotel is about a 20 minute stroll to the Danube, tram stop is right outside the Hotel and 5 minute stroll to the Metro (underground).
Would be hard to beat!

We arrived here before check-in time, but were very pleasantly greeted by a charming young man at reception, who told us that we were getting a complimentary upgrade. We were shown to an executive suite, that was spotlessly clean, very well decorated and very spacious. The entrance to the hotel is stunning, with beautiful marble floors and very elegant furnishings. We ate in the bar on our first night, and the steaks we ordered were delicious. The breakfasts were amongst the best we've had, and included a huge cold buffet offering everything from fresh fruits, cheeses, meats, yogurts, dressings, salads bread and pastries. A good hot buffet was also available and omlettes were cooked to order with a choice of filling. The staff were all very professional and helpful and the icing on the cake for us was when we got back to our room after our first day of sightseeing, and found a complimentary bottle of wine, box of chocolates and fruit waiting for us - a lovely gesture. All in all this is a very well run hotel, lovely to look at, and lovely to stay in, and if we ever return to Budapest, would not hesitate in staying here and sampling the spa, which we never got around to doing. Thank you.

The Corinthia exceeded out expectations in every respect. It is a beautiful building and, as other reviewers have said, the executive upgrade is a must. The rooms are large and well equipped and the executive lounge on the mezzanine is a lovely environment to have a relaxed breakfast or a drink and a snack. The hotel staff are really friendly and helpfu. We got great advice from them about what to see and do during our stay. In terms of location the hotel is slightly further away from the main attractions but it is very handy for shops and a good selection of retaurants and bars. The only slightly negative comment I have is that the hotel taxis were quite a lot more expensive than the ordinary cabs. They are executive cars however and the service was great so for short trips it was probably worth it for the convenience.

This hotel is luxurious in the least. Booked through Travel republic as last minute deal. The service was extremely courteous and not in that unctuous supercilious manner of most top hotels. Didn't get the once up and down by the receptionist and there was no feeling of condescension. The spa was easy to use - again it's use was explained in a matter of fact way. The food was fabulous - the breakfast choice was huge and of very high quality. Even having a evenign coffee in the bar was an experience. Furthemore the staff were extremely polite and helpful. The chambermaids said good morning if you passed them in the corridor. A stroke of luck was having a room opening onto one of the atriums. At night we left the window open and go to sleep listening to the soft strains of the piano drifting from the bar below- unforgettable. The only down side was the surrounding area - not as smart as the hotel but perfectly all right- close to metros and major transport links and good shops. Good choice of reasonable eating place in Liszt Ferenc Ter nearby. Make sure you eat in the pastisserie next door.

Room Tip: get a room overlooking the piano bar

We stayed here for 4 nights and it is a great hotel. The building is grand, reception beautifully decorated, our rooms of good size and pool/spa complex superb. It is located on a ring road with excellent public transport options (tram outside the front door and underground a 5 minute walk away). There is so much to see and do here and the concierge was fantastic in recommending restaurants and day tours and organising our transfers to/from train stations and airports. The city has just launched a Welcome Card which gets you access to a variety of venues and all public transport at a discounted price - unfortunately we didn't come across it until after purchasing our 72 hour travel card. Free walking tours leave from Vorosmarty Square at 10.30 each day and I'd highly recommend doing one - the guides are all Hugarian and have excellent knowledge of the history and contemporary life of this city and country.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
First opened in 1896 as the Grand Hotel Royal; a hub for the elite of nineteenth century society, and painstakingly restored to its original glory some hundred years later, the Corinthia Budapest – located in the heart of the city - brings together classic hotel opulence with the finest five-star luxury of modern times. While the gracious frontage, marble floors, sweeping staircase and breathtaking, six-story Atrium preserved from the original building offer glorious hints of a bygone age, the levels of comfort and convenience are all reassuringly up to date.A particular feature is the hotel’s original Royal Spa centre, with 15-metre pool, now extensively refurbished by the current owners to reflect the very best in 21st-century spa luxury while retaining the grandeur of the past. Without doubt the finest hotel in Budapest. Built in classic French Renaissance style, the Grand Royal became a beacon of luxury in the days of Emperor Franz Joseph 1. Designed as a centrepiece of Hungary’s celebrations to mark its first thousand years, the hotel’s grand-style architecture and unrivaled guest facilities were seen as state-of the art for the times. Much of the building was destroyed in the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and despite re-opening in more modest form in the 1960’s, the Grand Royal remained a shadow of its former self until the 1990’s; when new owners Corinthia Hotels gave the green light for an extensive restoration project that would retain the best of the old, while sensitively adding the new. Once restored to its original splendour, the newly named Corinthia Hotel Budapest re-opened its doors, as a five-star luxury property, in 2003. ... more   less
