“Amazing hotel!”
Reviewed 23 April 2014

This hotel is SO good! We had just seen 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' before visiting, and were astonished by how much we felt as though we were in the film! Beautiful interiors, breakfasts to die for and fabulous, attentive staff. The spa facilities / pool are wonderful - make sure you visit.

All the staff are friendly and helpful, the lobby is glamorous but inviting and the rooms have everything you need. The location was excellent, with restaurants and bars and hop on bus and transport just minutes from the hotel. We found the area very walkable and safe. Unfortunately, because we were trying to see as much as we could, we didn't make the best of the hotel and didn't eat in the restaurants. We did manage breakfast in the coffee shop, which was reasonably priced and lovely and a palinka in the bar.
Fortunately, I had seen comments about the heat in the rooms and emailed the hotel prior to our visit and they arranged for us to have a room with a window. Not sure we would have managed otherwise. The separate shower was great - felt like little fingers massaging my shoulders, and the hotel is very generous with shampoos etc. Fabulous hotel.

Room Tip: As others have said, if you like a cooler room, ask for one with a window.

We loved almost everything about this hotel. Our rooms were spacious, beautiful; all the furnishings were luxurious and in perfect condition. Communicated with concierge before our arrival and every day we were there - they were incredibly professional and took care of every request. Do not miss the pool area - the photos don't do it justice. Only small complaint - service at both the Brasserie and Rickshaw was very slow, although the food was excellent. We would definitely stay at the Corinthia again.

This is situated just off the main road leading to Heroes Square in the pest part of Budapest. Beautifully renovated building with very elegant interiors and huge statement staircase. Staff very friendly and all speak impeccable English and nothing is too much trouble.
Room very well appointed with an elegant bathroom with bath and very powerful separate shower.
We only ate breakfast but such a wide variety of food was on offer we did not eat again until the evening. Some hot food cooked to order, I would recommend the omelettes and although the daily special was sometime slightly weird it always worth it. Waiting staff incredibly polite and friendly and nothing too much trouble.

Nice touches were a daily news sheet in a variety of different languages and a weather forecast posted by the entrance to the restaurant.

The spa is well worth a visit with spotlessly clean sauna and steam rooms, jacuzzi and pool. Treatments on offer include some serious massages. The spa was very well staffed again by young people who went out of their way to be helpful and all of whom spoke English. The spa has a separate lift from the normal lifts so you can go down in swimwear and the complimentary bath robes and slippers direct from your room.

The hotel was in a very safe busy part of pest and we felt very happy walking back to the hotel in the late evenings after an evening out.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back away from the main road and tram stop which is directly outside the hotel...

The politeness, friendliness, helpfulness and courteousness of the staff cannot be faulted and is most definitely 5 star.
The breakfast buffet selection is great. I didn't use any of the restaurants but the bar twice, which was ok.

The things which are definitely not 5 star:

- the ashtrays at the front of the hotel were emptied only from time to time, one could see the same rubbish sometimes even after days in the rubbish container
- staff smoking at the front of the hotel, it seems they were mainly from the adjoining club
- a bar menu which was torn and certainly more than a year old as it was crumpled and slightly sticky
- the gueridons at breakfast were sometimes so hot that the contents stuck to the bottom or, like the scrambled egg, seemed to be fried and were dry on top
- some of the restaurant staff do not know the difference between cutlery on the plate that is crossed and cutlery which has been put side by side on the plate
- fingerprints on the glass balcony door were never cleaned
- hair longer than mine and of a different colour to mine in the bathroom sink (I travelled alone and had no visitors)
- the shower was not properly cleaned
- the carpet coming loose at the door to the room
- the wallpaper was getting loose in many places and seemed to cover over cracks in others
- no working heating. The guy from maintenance said, that the heating in the whole hotel didn't work and when entering my room agreed that the room was very cold and then brought me an electric heater
- a whole bottle of white wine served without a wine cooler
- to have the room safe at the bottom of the wardrobe might make it impossible to use for people with mobility issues
- a dirty glass left standing on the desk for 2 days
- a very slippery marble shower floor, be careful or try to get some mat or similar or use the bathtub which has a mat
- the radio alarm is joined with the general circuit which switches off as soon as you take the keycard out, as a result you would have to reset it again when coming back to the room. At the time of writing I don't quite see why suddenly it doesn't work at all anymore, just like that!
- being served in quick succession by three different people in a more or less empty bar is overkill/bad planning/bad organisation
- if you really want to be a 5 star hotel, you should know from which side to serve and from which to remove the plates, also, the lady should always be served first, then the gentleman (but that is maybe too old fashioned for today's times)

All these things and some more are not tragedies in themselves but contribute in my eyes to the hotel not being worth 5 stars.

Another thing: if you require, like me, a room with windows you can open and directly to the fresh air outside (otherwise headaches, fatigue and blocked sinuses will occur), you have to ask for it directly. Otherwise you might end up in one of the rooms to the atrium which only has used/processed air from the restaurant and lobby below.

Would I come back? Yes, if I want a 4 star hotel, definitely no if I want a 5 star hotel)

If you visit Budapest and don't stay here then you are robbing yourself of a fantastic experience and your trip will not be complete. The rooms are spacious and spotless, the spa facilities are first class and the buffet breakfast is the best you will ever experience! The location is perfect to access the whole city with everything within walking distance but the train and tram stops are within minutes walk from the hotel if required.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
First opened in 1896 as the Grand Hotel Royal; a hub for the elite of nineteenth century society, and painstakingly restored to its original glory some hundred years later, the Corinthia Budapest – located in the heart of the city - brings together classic hotel opulence with the finest five-star luxury of modern times. While the gracious frontage, marble floors, sweeping staircase and breathtaking, six-story Atrium preserved from the original building offer glorious hints of a bygone age, the levels of comfort and convenience are all reassuringly up to date.A particular feature is the hotel’s original Royal Spa centre, with 15-metre pool, now extensively refurbished by the current owners to reflect the very best in 21st-century spa luxury while retaining the grandeur of the past. Without doubt the finest hotel in Budapest. Built in classic French Renaissance style, the Grand Royal became a beacon of luxury in the days of Emperor Franz Joseph 1. Designed as a centrepiece of Hungary’s celebrations to mark its first thousand years, the hotel’s grand-style architecture and unrivaled guest facilities were seen as state-of the art for the times. Much of the building was destroyed in the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and despite re-opening in more modest form in the 1960’s, the Grand Royal remained a shadow of its former self until the 1990’s; when new owners Corinthia Hotels gave the green light for an extensive restoration project that would retain the best of the old, while sensitively adding the new. Once restored to its original splendour, the newly named Corinthia Hotel Budapest re-opened its doors, as a five-star luxury property, in 2003. ... more   less
