Burg Hotel
Ranked #122 of 333 Hotels in Budapest
Reviewed 15 December 2013

This is a small boutique hotel with about 28 rooms. It is in a fantastic location across the square from St Stephens Church and Fisherman's Bastian. You can easily walk to all the attractions in the old section of Buda. The hotel was clean and comfortable and staff are friendly and very obliging. The breakfast is included in the tariff and is quite sufficient.
Hotel is built over 3 levels and does not have a lift. It can be a bit of a struggle with luggage but staff are willing to help. There are a good variety of cafes in the area. We had an evening meal not far from the bottom of the Fisherman's Bastian called Gong. The food was simple but very enjoyable. The hotel direction can give directions.
Overall, considering location, convenience, breakfast and tariff the Burg Hotel is excellent value. This is our second stay and we would book the hotel again if returning to Budapest.

Room Tip: Try and avoid the top floor

With magnificent view over Matthia cathedral and square our stay was spoilt by lack of sleep. Our first floor window was directly above the bus stop which commenced at 4:45 am and continued until about 2 am. Our mid October stay coincided with a relative heatwave meaning we had to open the window.
Breakfast was a bit limited too, but the staff were very friendly and helpful.
We were offered a 5% discount for settlement in cash, to help with a "cash flow problem".

Room Tip: Rear rooms will be quiet but overlook an unattractive enclosed courtyard. Front rooms have great vie...

We stayed Sept. 8-12 2013.(Husband and wife) We were on the 1 st floor (second floor USA). We always visit Google Earth to get an Idea as to what places look like, views, location and distances to attractions. Zoom in on Google Earth and you will choose this hotel also. This is a very nice but but not a fancy hotel. Everything was up-to-date and neat. The room was very clean with a spectacular view of the church and the hotel is as described on its website. Very nice breakfast was included. It was not a fantastic breakfast but was very good. The staff members were all friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful. Our primary contact at the hotel was Mark (very nice man) who provided answers to all of our questions as well as some great suggestions. The hotel is in the Castle area which is busy with tourists during the day and quiet in the evening. The Church is within 50 yards of the hotel and the bells ring on the hour between 7am and 7pm. . We were not bothered at all by the bells or street noise. If you want to sleep late this may not be the place for you. We were up by 7 and off to see the sights by 9 every day.
The bus stops right at the hotel and it will take you to the local metro (underground) station which is also a hub for buses and trams to everywhere. Very easy and no problem at all to get anywhere in Budapest.
Many restaurants within 300 yards. Hilton Hotel is about 100 yards away. We thought it was an easy walk to the Chain Bridge and across to the Pest side.

Room Tip: We requested a room with a view of the square

I'm finding it more difficult to review Hotel Burg than I usually find it to review hotels I've stayed in. On the one hand, there are some very strong pluses about it that I want to acknowledge. The location is simply superb. Every room in the hotel has a fantastic view of Matthias Church and Fishermens' Bastion on Castle HIll in the old Buda side of the Danube in Budapest. The No. 16 Bus, which stops at the front door of the hotel, will whisk you directly to the center of town if you take in one direction, or to the closest Metro stop if you take in the opposite direction. There are many really great restaurants within a 5 minute walk of the front door. The rooms are spartan, but comfortable enough; the bathroom serviceable; the breakfast edible and included in the price; the WiFi free; the front desk friendly, English-fluent, and helpful; and the price for all this quite affordable (particularly for the choice location).
But on the other hand . . . in the case of this particular hotel, every one of these pluses (except the beauty and convenience of the location) has a downside. In the first place, the hotel itself is rather unattractive. Built in the 1970s by the Communist Government in power at the time, it is a concrete brick structure that is purely functional at best, and unsightly for its location. There is no elevator at all, so everyone has to lug their own luggage up the stairs to their room. The staff never offered to help with this chore, either to ourselves or to any other guest that I noticed. I mentioned that the rooms are spartan, but comfortable. That is the best I can say. There were no comfortable chairs in the room we had -- just one hard wooden one. Of the windows, one was broken, the other very difficult and cumbersome to open. And we had to open it, because the room was otherwise unbearably hot and stuffy. Contrary to what others have said on TripAdvisor (and in Frommers' guide as well) the room was definitely not large or commodious in the least. To the contrary, it was quite small, as were the twin beds. The miniscule pillows and duvet were barely adequate. The bathroom was 70's vintage, and the fixtures -- both shower and sink -- were in definite need of replacement. The breakfast, included in the price, was pathetic. Aside from an automated coffee machine and some bread, butter and jelly, there were eggs that managed to be both watery and greasy at the same time; foul-tasting sausage; uninteresting muesli; packaged yoghurt; and an anemic selection of cheese, cold cuts, and cold veggies. This never varied, and was depleted pretty quickly so if you didn't make it before 9 a.m., the selection was even scantier.
I mentioned the convenience of public transport, specifically the bus that stops at the front door. That convenience comes at the price of the noisy bus stopping and starting immediately outside your bedroom all day and all night. The Matthias Church is beautiful, but the bells that are rung early in the morning and at night are loud and not always welcome. The WiFi is free -- but weak and very spotty in the rooms. We were often frustrated by the poor connectivity we were able to get. Finally, while the guys at the front desk were friendly and tried to be helpful, I was struck by how little information they actually gave us. Although I repeatedly asked for restaurant suggestions, they all, to a man, kept recommending only one place. We tried that place, and it was pretty awful. On our own, with the help of TripAdvisor and Rick Steves, we found three wonderful restaurants just down the street. Strangely, none of the people at the front desk thought to suggest those places themselves.
I hate giving a hotel this economical, clean, and basically serviceable a bad review. But I have to be honest, and call them as I see them. I'm giving this place an "average" rating out of recognition of the friendly staff, the convenient location, and the affordable price. Just be aware that this is a budget hotel that happens to have a wonderful and beautiful setting -- no more, and no less.

If you want to stay on Castle Hill, this is a great spot. Easy access to Matthias Church (right out your window), Fisherman's Bastion and all of the beauty of living within the Castle walls. The lookouts over Pest are incredible, a photographers delight. There are several restaurants in the area, a delightful coffee house with scrumptious dessert cakes and easy bus access to Pest.
Our room was large, clean and somewhat dated, but the bed was very comfortable and the room was quiet.
The front desk crew were very helpful and spoke excellent English. I would strongly recommend that you talk with them about choosing a restaurant as they know the area well.
An excellent breakfast was included.
Would we stay here again? You betcha!

Hotel is cosy, quiet and very well located on the hill with outlook of Budapest. Breakfast is in the nice light room with the view of the square. Room was quite OK and comfortable. Parking possible for free in the square in front of the hotel. You need to have the parking bill ( from the machine at the entrance to the center of Buda) validated at the reception, then you will not pay anything. But better ask receptionist how it works now.
