“Pleasant and central”
Reviewed 9 July 2014

We spent five nights in Astoria, in the Fifts District (center of the town).
Our room no. 611 was on the sixt floor, well isolated from the noise of the street,so we enjoyed quiet nights or afternoons. Also has good acustical insulation.
WiFi distributed in the room as well as al overl the Hotel.
Good breakfest with traditional Hungarian dishes.
Staf very helpful and polite.
Recomended to all visitors of this beautyful town.

Room Tip: Inner room in high floor is the best choice

We stayed here for three nights. Our original room had a horrible stench...we had to move rooms. Overall, the hotel is in desperate desperate need of renovations. The furniture is outdated. The bedding looks decades old. The bathrooms are small and also in need of some updating. Wifi is only available in the lobby area unless you purchase use for your room...we did, and it was unreliable. The breakfast buffet was fair. Because the hotel is the oldest in the city, a nice renovation would make it a great place to stay.

This trip was actually August 2009 but I sent quite a few past clients here in the following 3 years to my trip. This historical hotel is very centrally located in Pest with a Metro station literally outside the side door and shares the same name. The multi-lingual staff was very helpful and friendly. The décor of the lobby/bar/restaurant was quite charming. The buffet breakfast was quite abundant offering a wide variety of items not typically found in the morning such as a rich stew of meat with paprika served over noodles, cabbage strudel and slices of various tortes from Gundel Restaurant. You will certainly NOT go hungry. From this hotel you are within a short walk to the Synagogue and only 10-15 min. walk from the incredible Vásárcsarnok, the great indoor market occupying a whole city block on 3 floors, adjacent to the Szabadsághíd (Independence Bridge). My favorite restaurant, Alfődi Kisvendéglő, is only a few blocks away on Kecskeméti utca

Dear Jason Y,

Thank you for leaving this very positive review from 2009 about your stay.
The main attractions are still very close to the hotel and we offer a rich variety of delicious cakes in our Cafe Astoria Restaurant. Gundel Restaurant is a member of the Danubius Hotels Chain, we have its specialities as well.
I look forward to your next visit and hope you will choose us again.

We very much enjoyed our short break at the Astoria. It is an impeccably clean, centrally located hotel with an old world thirties charm. I would not hesitate to recommend the hotel to anyone travelling to Budapest.

Rooms: we booked an ordinary double, which was very clean, large and well appointed. We were on the first floor with a lovely balcony looking out over the Main Street. The double glazing is very effective: although we were on the main road, we were not disturbed by any noise. Note the one downside, which is that there are no tea or coffee making facilities in the room. However, breakfast is served from seven and the hotel is so central that it is easy to nip out for a coffee at any time.

Staff: English speaking, rather reserved but perfectly helpful.

Food: we did not have dinner at the hotel, but did have breakfast both days. There is a very wide selection of hot and cold food. I thought the cold selection was best: melon, fruit, nuts, cheese, cold meat, cereals, rolls, desserts etc. I found the hot selection rather odd (including, as it did, cooked vegetables). The hotel clearly caters for a wide variety of tastes and cultures. My husband, a vegetarian, had no problem with the choice on offer.

Location: I thought the location was great. The hotel is right opposite a tram stop and a short walk to a stop for the Red tour buses. Budapest has a fabulous public transport system (it could teach London a thing or two...). We used the trams a lot. You must buy a ticket before you board, so either buy a Budapest card or make sure you buy a book of tickets from a newsstand (and validate the ticket once on board). We used the metro too during our stay. All very easy.

Sightseeing: Central Market Hall is easy walking distance. As is Gellert spa and the cave church (across the river). Embarkation points for the Danube river cruises are also easy walking distance. Most of the top visitor attractions (Parliament, Buda castle, Fisherman's bastion, Heroe's square and the museums) are a longer walk or a public transport ride or two away. We enjoyed walking around and getting to know the city.

Conclusion: this is one of the best value hotels I have ever stayed in.

This is a nice hotel for a short break. Its a ten minute walk from the Grand central market and Liberty Bridge. Its also close to various restaurants and the main square with nice shops. Its very close to the synagogue. The hotel is very clean, the staff are all friendly. I did not try the hotel breakfast as I wanted to eat in local cafes. There is free wifi in the lobby. Complimentary tea/coffee with a croissant is offered (but no one told us this- I found this out on the last day). Overall a great stay at this hotel.

We have just returned from a very enjoyable four nights at the Astoria. We chose the hotel because it was Hungarian and sounded interesting. It was full of old world charm with amazing chandeliers in the restaurant, enormous comfortable bedrooms and large modern bathrooms. There was an excellent variety of hot and cold food for breakfast, including delicious cakes and the staff were attentive and helpful. The hotel is in a very good position, close to bars, restaurants and shops and five minutes walk from the RiverDanube. Trams and the underground metro stop right outside the hotel which is very convenient for travelling around the city .

I was recently in Budapest for a conference and enjoyed my 2 night stay at the Danubius Hotel Astoria. It's centrally located, right next to public. Everyone who worked here was extremely friendly and helpful. The room was a bit small, but fine for one person. My only complaint is that there was not free internet access in the room, though it is apparently possible to access free wifi from the lobby. Breakfast was included with my stay and I found it to be good/above average -- nice selection of pastries, fruits, yogurt, eggs, etc -- typical European breakfast buffet. Although the hotel was located on a very busy street, my room was on the inside and super quiet.

Room Tip: Stay on the inside for quiet. No pool or gym.
