Owner description: Hungary’s capital, Budapest, is famous for its hot springs all over the world. Many people visit Hungary’s famous thermal baths, but only a few know that the hot water rushing up from deep underground created something else too. In the limestone mountains, under Budapest, the heated water formed a huge cave system, which is thought to be more than 100 km long. The spas and caves of Budapest are planned to be declared part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The longest cave of Hungary is the more than 30 km (20 miles) long Pál-völgyi-cave system located in the Duna-Ipoly National Park. It is a real multi-level labyrinth system with most of its chambers under the residental districts of Budapest. If you aren’t claustrophobic you can apply for our regularly scheduled cave tours which are guided by qualified caving guides. During the 2.5-3 hrs long tours you will often have to climb on walls and crawl through narrow passages so you have to be prepared for adventure. You will be supplied with overalls, helmets, and lights. You don’t need to have any previous experience in caving.

This was was an amazing experience and nothing like we had done before. The caves were very impressive. Our guide Lottie was awesome, he made our trip a lot of fun as he was so energetic and interesting to listen too. The trip was definitely value for money (24 euros per person). It can be a bit cold in the caves so I would suggest taking a light warm layer to put on underneath your overalls. I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone who is up for a challenge and wants to feel slightly out of their comfort zone.

This was a day to remember! It is very interesting and our guide spoke excellent English; he was funny, helpful and an all-around good guy. This is a great way to spend a day, and an even better way to do something you'll always remember while visiting Budapest. Now, there are a few things to take into consideration: 1)this is a big draw for the 20-something year-old backpackers--we were the only people there over the age of 30, and certainly the only ones who brought children. Everyone was very nice, but we should have gotten a hint on how challenging this might be just by the age of those in our group. 2)You wear proper equipment (a jumpsuit and hard hat with lamp) but there is no padding, so be prepared for you knees and elbows to be scrapped raw and there will be plenty of bruises! If I were going again, I would take knee pads for sure. If you are older, please be sure you're in good shape--THIS IS HARD WORK! You will climb using just your upper body to pull you through, you will belly crawl through tiny openings, and you wedge yourself between slippery rocks where it's difficult to get footing. I'm a 40-year old who runs four miles several times a week, and I found this very challenging. 3)If you are taking children: make sure they are in good shape and do not scare easily! Again: 40-meter ladder climb, tiny crevices, dark, etc., and everything is single-file, so no hand-holding. I took two boys, ages 14 and 10 (the caving age limit is 10-55 years old), and they had a blast, but it was hard work and I could see where those who are not "tough" could easily get scared when they get stuck (and you will get stuck) or just generally have a difficult time of it. So, yes--awesome experience. So glad I did it once. My boys will always remember Budapest for the caving--but please sign up knowing that it is a great deal of work, is very challenging, even for those who are fit, and you will be battered and bruised at the end--but all in good fun!

Caving under Budapest is an interesting option to those who enjoy having new experiences. The site is not very close to the city but it is worth the trip.

Just absolutely amazing. We really didn't know what to expect but it was well worth it. The tour guides are brilliant and clearly love what they do there, and there's just such a great feeling once it's over from a sense of accomplishment. Highly recommended.

Having not been caving before, I didn't know what to expect, however, I was completely taken away but how much fun this caving experience was.

The guides are fully trained and organised people into groups (it appears they place people of similar build/athletic ability so that each group has a reasonable amount of difficulty so that no one gets bored or to avoid some obstacles to be too tricky for some but not others).

Very safe at all times, although a lot of fun to be had. Just do it.
