“Good position and not bad for a 3 star”
Reviewed 17 August 2013

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights and found it was perfect for exploring the city. The reception staff were very helpful and booking in was easy. The overall feel of the rooms is one of light and spaciousness and are full of charming solid furniture and the bathroom is ok too. However, on closer inspection the hotel décor is 'tired' and some cleaning had been overlooked eg grubbiness around light switches, dust in the corners, plastic flowers etc. Also the bed mattresses were uncomfortable and appeared past their best. Service people were not discrete and it was not unusual to find a pair of step ladders abandoned in a corridor. The downside was breakfast... this was fine if you are looking for a 'European' type breakfast, but lacked fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereal choice etc. It wasn't good, and the waiting staff not particularly welcoming. The coffee was good though (no English tea!) Overall, this is good value for money, but don't expect too much... a freshen up and a lick of paint would work wonders...

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights. It was pretty cheap considering it's location. High ceiling rooms, nice little clean bathroom with a bathtub, air-conditioning worked funny but managed to lower the temperature in the room. There was a safe and a mini-bar, as well as the TV with international channels. Breakfast was included in price and very versatile. The receptionist was very pleasant and helpful. The only bad thing was the bed. We got one king size bed(as we wanted) but the mattress was horrible. You could feel every metal wire inside it, I woke up few times each night in pain. They should really work on it. And their Wi-Fi was poor, we could barely open google with it. As for the other things, everything was in place.

Our room was very spacious with a hallway bigger than our small bedroom. A bathroom led off with a bath/ shower over, double basins and toilet. The bedroom also led off the hallway. With a double and two single beds, TV, fridge, dressing table, cabinet and still plenty of room to move about. Unfortunately I can't remember the room number but it was a corner room as we also had a double aspect view out the windows. All the rooms however were not as grand; a friend who was staying too had a room for two that looked a little more like a broom cupboard! Well actually I think our hallway was bigger, so it is luck of the draw. Breakfast was good with a vast range of breakfast items, continental and hot. Budapest well worth a visit and this hotel was quite central to reach everything. There are open topped tour buses, trams or we walked everywhere.

I must admit I was expecting far worse when I saw the pictures of the hotel online and checked the street pictures on GoogleMaps.

The hotel is located quite close to the city center and there many restaurants nearby.

The rooms are clean and very spacious.

My girlfriend and I stayed there for only one night but I would definitely recommend the hotel for a longer stay.

I don't think we could find a better 3-star hotel for such a low price (we even had the breakfast included, though we picked the "room only" option).

We chose to visit Budapest for a long weekend, arriving on Saturday and leaving on Tuesday.
The people, food and general atmosphere are all great. We had a memorable visit. The only disappointing aspect of the visit was the Hotel Unio. The hotel is advertised as three star and their own write up claims to exceed this standard. I do not expect much from a hotel, it is somewhere to sleep and as long as it is clean and reasonably comfortable then I am happy. What little I expect from a hotel is not to be found at the Hotel Unio. The Hotel Unio is like a cross between Fawlty Towers and the Hammer House of Horrors. I was half expecting Peter Cushing to step out of the lift at any moment, or to discover Basil Fawlty dressed as Count Vlad Dracul behind the front desk. The hotel is run down and badly maintained. There was a smell in the lift that was sometimes like a bad public toilet and at other times smelt like over boiled cabbage. The staff that we had contact with were friendly and mostly helpful but…….. Budapest wakes early, the city is bustling with life before 6 am, butchers, bakers and coffee shops are all open and the Hotel Unio expects the same from its guests. There were two doors on our floor marked SERVICE. I have no idea if they were cupboards or rooms but at 6:30 on Sunday morning and at 6:00 on the other days these doors were opened and slammed repeatedly. We were never late up.
Our room was very hot and stuffy. There were air conditioning controls in our room and adjusting them did vary the sound that the fan made, but no air moved and the temperature did not change at all. When my partner told the receptionist that our room was hot she was told to open a window. When she told him that we already had he just shrugged.
There was a mini bar in the room but we did not use this. There was no kettle, so we bought bottles of water from the shop round the corner and kept these in the room.
There is a safe in the room, which is a big plus point.
The food at breakfast was not very appealing, fried eggs that have been kept warm for a long time are never attractive, we did not try the restaurant at any other time. The coffee was good.
The best thing about the Hotel Unio is its location. Two minutes walk to a tram and less than five minutes to the metro.
We loved the people in Budapest. Everybody was friendly and we found that learning how to say please and thank you in Hungarian goes a very long way. A simple “cussunum” (thankyou) is met with a delightful smile.
We will be visiting Budapest again, but we will be staying elsewhere.

The hotel is very dark, very hot and very creepy.
Good points - location - it is close to the tram stop and a short walk from the metro station.
Bad points - the hotel.

Stayed for three nights. If this is a 3 star I dread to think what the lesser star hotels are like. Our unexpected ' alarm' noises woke us each morning between 05.30 and 06.00 thank you to the cleaning staff for that. The previous nights leftover cake and meat was a breakfast extra thank you to the chef for that.

Some of the staff were friendly.
Can you tell I'm struggling on the good points ?
I loved Budapest and shall return but not to this hotel.

Room Tip: Difficult. If the room is near a door that says Service then expect to be up around 6 am. Also adv...
