We visited here yesterday and wanted to save our feet on the walk up, so purchased a 1 way ticket for each of us. We were going to walk down, but decided we might aswel hop back on here down the hill.
However when greeted by one of the rudest Hungarian lady we decided to walk. This wasn't because of a lack of understanding, rather she had no time to offer any help when asked a question, rather she pointed to a sign and walked out of her office. Disgusting

Although it's a quick way to get up to Castle Hill, it's pricey; better to take a stroll up the shady, windy path.

It's not needed, it's not cheap but it is a lovely Funicular taking you up to the castle area from the chain bridge. Everyone on it was a tourist and it costs 1100 HUF one way. Nice views (but you get this from the castle area anyway. If you're short of funds, just have a look at it, walk up the pathways which thread up the hillside, crossing the funicular on bridges. You won't miss much by not actually riding on it.

The funicular railway is a wonderful way to climb Budapest Hill. The views on the ride up are simply stunning and you are not disappointed by the surroundings when you reach the top. There are some delightful cafés and restaurants plus numerous superb buildings to see.
I can heartily recommend this as a novel and fun way to see a very special part of the city.

OK you can easily go up to the Buda castle on foot, but I would reccomend to use a funicular at least for going up.It is very short journey but fun and interesting. And then you can walk all the way down .
