The caves are beautiful. There is a guided tour every hour, it leaves every 15 minutes after a round hour (10:15, 11:15, 12:15, etc...). You cannot go inside without a guide. I recommend calling beforehand to see when they have a guide in English. We didn't do that and got stuck with an Hungarian guide (we didn't understand nothing...). But it was beautiful never the less. The guided tour costs 2600 HUF. The tour is about an hour in which you will go down and up stairs, and you will go inside the mountain for about 500 Meter.
It is beautiful and very recommended

This 45-min tour is well priced, a bit northwest of Budapest on the Buda side. The guide takes you down quite a way and explains a lot about how the caves and formations came to be. Amazing when you think how very old these caves are. There was some climbing of stairs, so I would say one needs to be in at least fair condition to make the trek. Not good for bad knees. NOTE: the pamphlet we received with our 72 hr Budapest card said we'd get a 50% discount, but when we got to the place, they said they no longer have that scheme going on. Regardless, the tour was worth what we paid. We used the travel card to bus out to the caves.

Palvolgyi caves are a good way to spend an hour admiring the natural beauty and having some fun / adventure simultaneously. You can go there by taking bus 65 from Kolosy Ter bus stop. At a price point of 1200 Ft for adults, 960 for students, the tour is a total steal. I recommend taking the combined Palvolgyi and Szemlohegyo ticket and doing both the caves in a day - it is not tiring at all. The Palvolgyi tour can be completed in an hour. there is another adventure tour that needs climbing, crawling and may get your clothes dirty. My friends did this and were really happy.

The only downside of the one hour tour was that the tour guide only speaks Hungarian and you will be given a paper which has concise summary of each point at which he speaks. That can be a bit of a downer. You can bring your camera or DSLR along - it wont get damaged as there are rarely any narrow passages.

The tour only has one ladder otherwise is pretty much a smooth sailing.

The cave has very interesting forms of stones. It takes about an hour to visit. For them, who like this tipe of caves (the water is forming the stones very slowly.)

The caves are in Buda, beneath the "Castle district". We were the only English speakers amongst many Hungarians. It is cool so bring a sweater. You go down about 125 feet and must traverse 400 stairs and a ladder that is about 21 feet. it is not particularly strenous and it is well lighted. They do not give you a suit or a helmet but you don't need them, just a sweater or sweatshirt. The tour was in Hungarian but they give you a sheet in English to follow along. Our tour was 50 minutes. We arrived by taxi and had the driver return about 1.5 hours after since the tours begin at :15 of each hour beginning at 10:15.
