I agree with most of the reviews here; the hotel is in a good location - very close to metro line, SPAR supermarket, Castle Area and of course the Danube. The hotel is on the Buda side of the river, which we were worried may have been a mistake, but it was so safe and easy to walk around - a good choice.

The rooms are standard Novotel quality - quite spacious and clean of course. Nightlife is ok - but you have to hunt around. Most of the young locals leave the city in July and August to head to Lake Balaton, so you might want to consider this.

Budapest is a great city - small but perfectly formed. Really safe, great people. Quite expensive at the moment though for UK visitors. Might be best to wait until the exhange rate improves.

my hungarian friend told me this novotel has the best location among the 3novotels in budapest if your primary goal is to sight see. I must say the location is excellent. It is near supermarket, subway station, walking distance to pest and other main sights like paliament.. etc. However, the staff at the reception are so unpleasant especially the ladies... so rude and unwilling to answer quiries about getting from point A to point B. It makes me wonder why they are still stil working there if they are so unhappy. To make things worse, i made my booking with hotels.com and had called their toll free tel no to ask if the price includes breakfast since it was not stated on the internet. They said yes but when i was in the novotel, i was told i had to pay additional for the breakfast. Nevertheless, the room is nice, hotel in an excellent location and i would stay here again if i know i do not need any other services from d hotel apart from a place to stay for the night.

Excellent location within walking distance (20 minutes uphill!) of the Castle district, Margaret Island, the Chain Bridge.
Newish facilities so everything works including in-room Internet access, good plumbing etc.
Nice views across the river from Parliament , but have to pay extra for river view.
Limited good restaurants within short walking distance - need to go across to Pest side or uphill.

We stayed at the Novotel Danube 2nd to 6th July 2008. We arrived quite late but kitchen managed to sort out a really nice sandwich. The room was just ideal, modern and very clean. The staff were polite and helpful and spoke very good English. The real bonus is the location, right next to the Danube, overlooking parliament and only a few minutes walk from the tram, train, underground and buses. There's also a really useful small shopping centre just around the corner. The only downside was the cost of breakfast which wasn't included in the Expedia deal. Continental style breakfast 8 euros but the full buffet breakfast was 17 Euros. We just bought a croissant from the local shop.

  • Liked — Cleanliness and central location
  • Disliked — Breakfast too expensive

I am quite surprised with the good reviews this hotel got.
We got to the hotel late in the evening. Maybe because of the late hour, the receptionist was not in the best of moods. He wasn't rude, but could be nicer. But OK, I can understand that staff may be tired and sleepy at 11 pm. Then, however, we got to our room, which was incredibly small and had no wardrobe. When we put our suitcases on the floor, there was technically almost no space to move around the room.
The bathroom was very nice, spacious and clean and had both a bath and a shower.
In the morning it turned out that we have a beautiful view.. on the wall of a grey building. Down there, there was a concrete square with dustbins and smoking cleaners. I did not book a room with a view on the Parliament, but I didn't expect to get this kind of room anyway.. It was not Novotel-like at all.
Breakfast was fine except one little drawback - there was no cutlery on my table and as I couldn't find any in the area, I went to ask the staff. She was close to rude. Oh, if looks could kill... I wouldn't be writing this review now. :)
The hotel is not far away from the city centre, although if you don't like walking, you'd better find something even more central. The underground stop is nearby.

  • Disliked — The size of the room and the staff
