The location of the hotel is perfect and it is very quiet. Once you enter the hotel, you feel like you entered a museum.
The elevator is spooky and do not freak out it you encounter a cockroach. It walked freely until I committed a murder, but the hotel luckily did not ask for an extra fee because I killed its pet. Also, there was neither shower gel or shampoo in the bathroom, nor soap in the toilet.
The good things are that the bed was too cozy and it has a perfect view.
Overall experience is that it was not too bad if you remember that it was 150 years old and you get the impression you run away from the present time.

We spent three days in Debrecen and stayed in Civis Grand Hotel Aranybika. We had our holiday with our grandchildren (3 and 5 years old girls), so we got a family room. It consisted of two rooms and had a kitchenette, too. Although the furniture was old, the rooms and the bathroom were very clean. The hotel itself looks nice, the entrance hall and the corridors have been renovated, repainted. The staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel is still under renovation but we could not see or feel it. I am sure it will be a wonderful, smart hotel by 2015! Good luck!

Room Tip: Our room faced inyard, it was calm, no noise.

The building is undergoing renovation and should be shut down during this. It's like a building site, not a hotel right now. The room (superior...as if) needs a complete overhaul, especially the stained bath, the persistent smell from the toilet, crammed bathroom, flaking paintworn, worn & stained furniture. The staff were helpful but as this was a business trip an appropriate level of English for a city hotel should be apparent.
What I am especially annoyed about is that the photos and statements on their website are so far removed from reality. It did not look the same, it did not provide the services (wifi, wellness) that it promised.
A Hungarian, who has never been to the hotel, recommended it based on what she heard in the past. I think she would be shocked now, if she saw it.

Beautiful building but desperately needs help. Our room was large but contained random, unmatched, worn furniture-the arms came off the chairs if you tried to move them. The room was clean but didn't feel like it. The view from our room (facing front, 3rd floor) was fabulous but the noise level from 12:30am-4:30am kept us from sleeping-many, many inebriated young people out and about in front of the hotel. (hopefully this was a one time occurrence). Breakfast, served in a beautiful room with a stained glass ceiling, was adequate except for the very, very slow coffee machine. The staff did the minimum expected. The hotel's location is perfect for walking around the city and people watching on the plaza in the evening but I would not stay there again.

This hotel is a total disaster. Located on a main square of Debrecen, looking stunning from the outside and the original parts of the building still hold up nicely. We were told that the hotel is on a market for sale. The main building has outdated rooms you can see on the website. The "new" building, the additional wing to the original built in the 1970s, is where our room was located. That wing and the rooms should not be rented out to visitors. Dark hallways, tiny rooms, no decor, less then hostel accomodation. The breakfast was sufficient. The staff do a minimum that they're expected to do. The hotel offers a parking for a very high price behind the building. Don't use it!!! Park at the city parking lot for half a price. If you stay over the weekend, the parking is free from 8 PM on Saturday and all day on Sunday.
We used the spa facility once during our stay. Enjoyed the pool and the sauna. The steam room and the hot tub didn't work properly.
Insist and book a room in the original building, facing the square.

It was very disappointing to find out there was no wifi in the room. The outside building and the surroundings looked nice, but the inside was so outdated. They can use a renovation inside; need upgrading ASAP. The room and bathroom were clean and okay size. For me not having WIFI in the rooms was deal breaker.

i choose ex communist hotels for their location only!having read the reviews and from previous eastern european experince,i got exactly what i expected for the price.my room,in which i only sleep and wash was quite good and spacious.everything worked.breakfast seemed to be appreciated by some, hungarians i imagine.i neede the hot water and milk for the tea which i carry with me around europe.the rest i can get elsewhere.the restaurant was adequate.100yards from everywhere, was the main selling point from which i could leisurely stroll around town foer the few days i was there.
