“Nice hotel, good thermal baths, indoor aquapark”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 August 2011

Hi,
We just returned from Debrecen where we spend 5 days in Aquaticum Hotel.
The hotel is situated in the old thermal baths building surrounded by a beautiful park.
The building is like a labyrinth: a lot of doors and corridors to different pools and medical and SPA facilities.
The room is clean but replicates somehow the building design: a lot of doors for a small apartment.

Somehow annoying fact is the parking. It cost you a lot but is far away from the hotel. Difficult to manage for families with small kids with a lot of stuffs to get in the holiday.

The thermal baths looks bit old, but the water is good and you can choose from pools with different temperatures ( from 20 to 40 Celsius degrees). There is an outdoor thermal pool as well.
The indoor aquapark is quite new and is very noisy: the sound of different water systems is high and the kinds using the water tubes screams a lot when they collide with the pool. The light is strong and the sunglasses needs to be used during sunny days.
The restaurant is good, with a lot of traditional Hungarian dishes (quite spicy sometimes).
The overall feeling after we spend some days in Aquaticum is good.

Room Tip: the appartments can accomodate up to 4 persons

We have just arrived from Aquaticum Debrecen Thermal and Wellness Hotel. It was a short holiday which could have been better (for the price). I have been to the water theme park before and thought that staying in this hotel was the most convenient way to spend 2 nights. I was wrong in only one thing: price/value.

Main focus for us: the rooms and the hotel were clean!

Parking is not free (~7 EUR/night) and the place is quite busy. Free and more spacious parking place would be better. The staff is helpful and do they best to navigate you empty places which is hard because of some strange guests who park one car into the place of two cars.

You have to go through a restaurant's "garden" to reach the thermal bath's main entrance. The building itself desperately needs a renovation. The reception is on the second floor which is strange but understandable. Reception staff is kind and helpful either at check-in or check-out. They give you RFID wrist watch for the spa, voucher for the welcome drink, towel card and a plastic (RFID) door key. I really don't know why can't one use the wrist watch to operate the room doors.

Be the way, welcome drink. You can choose to have a small bottle of champagne or a soft drink. It is a valuable gift regarding the prices of everything in this hotel.

The rooms are ok if you want to use the room only for sleeping and dressing. They are definitely not 4 stars. If TV is a question for you be prepared the the device in the room is really small. We did not use it at all but can't imagine how one can see anything on this small screen. From the bed...

Spa towels can be obtained on the third floor at the wellness reception. They change these towels in 3 days which is ridiculous. So you have to dry yourself or pay for the extra changing. 4 stars, eh? You get uni-size bath robes which is good for the "big" guests. One of our robe was hollow. We didn't really care about the design, the colors, the furniture but the personal impression is 3 stars at most. Except the prices.

All the prices are extremely high and the 8% compulsory service fee is not included. They have one kind of beer on tap, the wines are expensive but tasty.

The breakfast and dinner are served in the "basement" in a small restaurant. Prepare to wait for table and food in high time. The food tastes well but the selection and the replenishment are poor. Dinner is served till 9pm, but after 8pm the service becomes even slower.

To summarize our experience: The spa is superb and fun even for adults (especially couples) but the wellness hotel is 3 stars at most with a very high price level. I doubt we try it again the hotel but we will be back to the spa.

Room Tip: All the same. Try to get one on the second floor closer to the spa entrance

There is nothing really wrong with this hotel but it definitelly not feels like a 4 stars hotel.

When you arrive you need to walk a lot from the parking location (despite they ask a high fee for the parking). After you passed through the old and overused building of the spa area you reach the reception on the second floor - uh weird isn't it. So the first impression was a huge disappointment.

The crew is nice and they are trying hard to give you the impression of staying in a real 4 stars hotel. If you close your eyes you may belive them. If you open it, you see a tastlessly designed cheap interior. Our room was no different. It was small but full of ugly furnitures (in good condition) and it was so badly designed. When the armchair was open (as a small extra bed for children) there wasn't space to put down our baggage. The TV was small and terribly placed you couldn't watch it from the bed. Strange enough but the bathroom looked airy and pretty nice - especially compared to the rest of the room.

The sleep quality was terrible for me. They said they are using medical matresses - unfortunatelly it wasn't compatible with my back, I couldn't even stand up at the morning. For the rest of our stay I dealt my bed with our 5 years old son and I slept in his little extra bed :). This was definitely the worst part of this hotel but I survived it and I am back to home.

My wife tried the massage service in the hotel area. The massage room was very cold they haven't used any blanket or towel to cover her but cold oils. The whole massage was poor she said.

When we first left the hotel area to enjoy the spa part of the building the hotel stuff gave us towels - one for each person. They strongly emphasized they will not change these to clean ones just on every 3rd day (uh, 4 stars hotel?)

The bigest advantage of this hotel is its easy access to the spa and the other water facilities. Easy means you can reach them in bathrobe - but you better don't leave your GPS behind if you want to find anything in that labyrinth. The spa itself is great. It has two main facilities, one is a thermal bath with a lot of medical services. It looks overused and is crowded but not bad at all - I really enjoyed it. The other part is a roofed water theme park, great for the kids. It is safe and the stuff is carefully watching everywhere. This is the best part of the whole spa complex.

The food in the hotel is acceptable. I usually eat better tasting dinners in other hotels but there is nothing I can blame here. After spending a full day in water you are happy to eat anything aren't you?

As a summary: this hotel was a big disappointment for me but mainly because my expectations were higher. During the last years I had a chance to try other 4 and 5 star 'wellness' hotels in the area and those were much more exclusive.

Our family has joined me for two business trips to Debrecen. We stayed at the Lycium once and most recently at the Aquaticum. In both cases we experienced very good customer service. Though the Lycium is more updated, our "apartment" unit at Aquaticum more than fit our family of 5 very comfortably. The front desk staff was attentive and spoke just not enough English that we could communicate sufficiently. Our family loved the very ample breakfasts. It could be the time of year but we had no problem with over-crowding in the pools or breakfast. There's easy transportation to and from the Aquaticum into the Debrecen city center using the trolley that stops right by the hotel. All in all, we have no problems recommending the Aquaticum or Lycium to families visiting Debrecen.

Stayed here two nights. The hotel caters to families and people who come to use the thermal baths for health purposes. The place was packed, especially with tourists from neighbouring European countries.
The facilities look tired - rooms are comfortable but worn. No Internet except for a lone PC in the lobby. Pools are packed.
Breakfast buffet packed with hordes of people.
Located at the edge of the city so you need to take the tram in to town. Only takes about 10 minutes, you can get tickets from the hotel kiosk and there is a stop right outside the hotel car-park so not a problem. However , make sure you validate your tram ticket on-board in the punch-hole thingy - ticket inspectors are frequent and not sympathetic to confused-looking tourists.

We stayed here for Easter, we had a 3 day welness package - Pampering days... and we had a great time.
The first impression was not so great, when i saw the hotel from the outside I thought I chose a bad hotel, it does not look so good from the outside. We entered and I had the same bad feeling about our trip, even though the cars parked there were numerous and expensive. We took the elevator to the 2-nd floor to the reception...and we had a big surprise: it was very nice, as if we have entered in other hotel.
Stuff - super nice, welness package - the same, we felt like royalty there. The room was nice, but we didn't have a nice view, this was not a problem, because our room was just for shower and sleep, we didn't have much time. They programmed our massages and baths, so we were very busy. The food was great, the restaurant is nice, even if it doesn't seem like a 4 star restaurant. The baths are excelent, it is not possible to get bored in 3 days. With this packege we took they gave us also tickets for the Zoo, it was nice there too.
All in one - I can't wait to go back!

The four star Aquaticum Thermal and Wellness Hotel is situated in a conservation area on the edge of the great forest. The Hotel is decorated and maintained to a high standard. Book an apartment very good value. You can also book Fitness and Wellness packages. Staff are very friendly and helpfull most of them either speaking English or German. There an indoor swimming pool, indoor and outdoor thermal pools, a mediterranean water and sauna centre and in addition all the beauty and therapy treatments you could wish for. Hotel is approx 10 min tram ride from outside Hotel to the centre of Debrecen, or a 30min walk down a tree lined boulevard. Debrecen is a university town so there are lots of bars and resturants. Highly recommended, give it a try. I've booked again for 2007. Have a look at their website. www. aquaticum.hu
