“Excellent location, disappointing service”
Reviewed 19 October 2013

Although still the premier, centrally located hotel in Sopron, I confess we were a little disappointed.

The arrival, unloading and location of nearby parking is all fine.

The hotel is located in one of the town’s splendid old Baroque houses complete with carriage entrance and garden (not obviously open during our stay). The room we occupied on the first floor was roomy with a good bathroom, albeit a bit dated in style and décor. Unlike so many modern conversions, however, the heavy wooden shutters were still fully functional!
Although we were greeted by an enthusiastic, friendly member of staff, unfortunately her colleagues did not match her commitment. Even if you lack the language skills, surely a smile can go a long way.

The breakfast was adequate. Whilst there were hot options, they were not offered but had to be requested and sadly were not wonderful. They also attract an extra charge. Although formerly offering guests dinner and wine-tasting packages, these are now limited to Groups only.

In fact the whole place felt as if it had ‘dropped a gear’ in recent times, and did not seem to be the same place as visited by previous reviewers. I wonder if there has been a change of ownership or certainly a fall onto harder times?

Dear Guests,

Thank you very much for your opinion which is very much valued. Because our hotel isn't very large and can only accept a smaller capacity of people we always serve hot options at breakfast freshly which is why they are not part of our breakfast selection.
It is very important that our staff show equal enthusiasm and comittment towards the guests. If you feel this did not happen we express our sincere apologies.
Our restaurant -which currently only holds events for goups- is adapting to the current economic situation which is the reason why it is only open for groups.
Once again we would like to thank you for your review and despite the negative experiences we hope to see you in the future.

Best regards,

Hotel manager

I could write a good bit about the many reasons we found this hotel so nice...but the offer of the owner to allow us to borrow her and her husband's coats because of the abnormally cold fall day was reflective of our entire stay. Staff was very friendly and rooms were clean and well organized...unless you are looking for a large convention/tourist hotel, you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: Better to stay on the courtyard if you have the windows open...late night revelers might wake you ;)

I was with a group of 13 people cycling from Prague to Budapest and got here in the evening with the group. Its a small but quaint hotel in the center of town run by a husband and wife. Tr e property itself is very beautiful - they have a restaurant on the ground floor with a seating area on the outside, they have a large garden on the first floor where you can sit and enjoy your coffee/tea in the morning. You can walk to the major attractions in Sopron from here - the fire tower was a 5 min walk from here. We did dinner here as well and the food quality was very good. The service is excellent as well. I would definitely go back if visiting Sopron. Oh also, the rooms are very nice and comfortable as well :)

Room Tip: lower floors as there is no elevator - its a 2 or 3 story hotel

The Hotel Wollner was a good choice to stay. The owners of the hotel were very kind and helpful. All the reasonable request will be accepted. The location was in an authentic baroque old town with its pros and cons. (Beautiful old houses, very good location but because of the narrow streets it was a little noisy.) The hotel itself was an old baroque building with a matching interior. It's a very good choice if you are a hotel-gourmet.

A couple with a little boy.

In an conflict with cab-drivers the rezeption endorsed not our guide (as a guest of the hotel) but the hungarian cab drivers. I had the bad impression, they tried to ripp us off.
Dinner for the group in the evening was not, what yout might expect from a hotel of this category. I was glad to back to Austria, to have a nice service again.

I stayed in Hotel Wollner for one night. The room was large. Decoration was a bit old fashioned but both the room and the hotel were comfortable.

Location is excellent. The hotel is located in the center of nice town of Sopron. If you driving, you can park in nearby streets.

Service was very good too. We arrived pretty late on Friday evening, The receptionist was very helpful in advising the local restaurant scene.

Overall, Hotel Wollner offers very good value for your forints.

Dear Tygrys,

Thank you very much for your detailed review. Our hotel is built in a style that represents the historical essence that Sopron has to offer, which to some may be regarded as old-fashioned, however we continously try to maintain the balance between old/ historical and modern- with an elegant exterior and interior design in which our hotel was originally re-built combined with the efficiency of modern technology. We hope to see you agian in our hotel in the future and wish you all the best!

After reading reviews here as well as on other sites we decided to go to Hotel Wollner.
The room we had was great. It was basically a suite. We found out that to get a true double bed in Europe, not just double beds that are pushed together. One needs to request a French double bed. Thanks to the reservation staff for enlighten us to the peculiarities of European double beds.

The furnishings were tastefully coordinated and we felt right at home with the very friendly staff. Since the hotel is located in the center of the formerly walled city their is very little traffic and NO pollution. You are allowed to drive up to the hotel and unload. A parking garage is a very short walk away.

Breakfast was included and they had a good selection of tasty foods. Fresh breads, pastries, cheeses, and vegetables of better quality than most.

If you come in after hours you basically let yourself in the main gate.

The price was high season and it was still cheap compared to what we paid in a 4 star hotel that I would barey rate as a 3, ie 90 EU compared to 240 EU.

Only negative thing was the Sauna was not working. However if we had asked earlier they would have gotten it ready for us.

I will definitely stay at Hotel Wollner when I am next back in Sopron
