“AVOID THIS HOTEL!!!!!”

We travelled to this Hotel with my Family, to spend a long weekend here. We really love this part of Hungary, and this Hotel is situated in a very beautiful location. Unfortunately that is all the best, I can tell about Hotel Fagus.
Let me explain:
Pros:
- location, surroundings
- activity and trip possibilities around Sopron
Negatives:
- MATTRESS: the worst sleeping experience ever!!!! We were in this hotel some years earlier, and they told us, that the mattresses will be changed. Well, the mattresses haven't been changed since then. They are really bad, simply unable to sleep on them. We had planned many things to do in Sopron, and around, so after 1 night we bought a rubber mattress, just to be able to sleep a little bit. It's a shame for a 4* hotel...
- SHEETS: they were dirty!!!!! And smelled like somebody (or more) has alrady slept in it, and after them the sheets were only ironed out, but not washed out. All the pillow sheets smelled like oily hair. Pfujjjjj!!!!! We had to buy new pillow, and new pillow sheets in order to be able to sleep. It is a shame.
- SMELL: the rooms smell like a tired old canteen room, when You enter, and unfortunately You simply can not get rid of the terrible smell. You can smell it in the bathroom, also. Hated it!
- WELLNESS: You can feel like nobody cares for it, the water, that came out from pools was never wiped out, it was really slippery, and extremely dangerous. And You could feel the dirt here, also.
- FOOD: from the cheapest ingredients do not expect fine food, but when something ran out, they did not replaced, which is also not acceptable.
-STAFF: You can recognize the same feeling in Fagus, everywhere, they simply don't care. Feels like there is no owner of this Hotel. We met a rude receptionist, when we asked the code of wifi, she just simply poked her finger to a small board, - without saying a word -, from what we could read the code. Yes, we can read, but I think this is not the way a receptionist could deal with a guest.
- SMOKE: probably it was the 2nd worst part (1st was the mattress) of our stay. They designated the smoking area at the back of the reastaurant, just under the rooms. So You could smell the smoke in the restaurant, and in your room. We travelled to this hotel for its location, for the fresh air, but we rarely could smell some fresh air, because of the constant bad smoke smell. Smoking area should be situated far from the place where the majority of the guests would like to eat and sleep. But....as I have mentioned, they simply don't care....
- BATHROOM: you can find towels inHotel Fagus with the name of another hotel: Hotel Magnus.... Excuse me!? Feels like they bought some old stuff from a bankrupt hotel, and they think oh, these are good for guests of Hotel Fagus... In the bathroom You could found nothing but just liquid soap. No shampoo, no conditioner, no body lotion, nothing, just liquid soap... The bathroom was dirty, also, specially the WC, it even smelled really bad.
Finally this is a hotel, which location, the surroundings are beautiful, even the facilities of the hotel are good, but it leaded in a very negligent, careless way, which comes out from every part of it. This is a shame! It should be closed, or the management should be changed in a very short way!

Room Tip: There are NO good rooms. At all.

Thank you very much for your review. Of course we are not very pleased to read only negatives about the hotel and the services, but if you felt you have had not any positive experience, we have to accept it , though , we're very sorry about it.
Thank you for your constructive criticism too, we’ll put away the smoking area from the exit of our restaurants. So far was not reported this problem to us by our customers. Receptionist colleague 's behavior is truly not acceptable, we do not fit the guests, so we apologize to you for her name.
Unfortunately, in a lot of things I need to give you the truth, as one of the owners of the hotel operator company. It took over one and a half years ago, the hotel operation to contract our included in the hotel's owner - MKB Bank”s related company - immediately starts on the basis of our original renewal list the nine -year-old hotel has been continually delayed renewal (mattresses, textiles, wellness, maintenance - air -conditioning, ventilation, heating, etc.) processes.
Unfortunately, this has not yet begun, and we can not be budgeted without the owner’s assistance the costs of the renovation.
We regret that due to the above mentioned problems, did not turn in to rest, as planned, so on behalf of the owner and of course in our own behalf we apologize from you.

The hotel is not a five star but you get what you pay for. The price is very good in comparison to what you get. A spacious room, a nice little spa, beautiful gardens with a playground and play room is fine too. Breakfast has every thing you would need with kids. As a family we prefer to have our lunch and dinner out of the hotel anyway. We had lunch in Austria and it cost as much as one night in the hotel. Really Hungary is affordable and this hotel is great as a base point to discover Austria and Bratislava.

We went there for the weekend with my wife and little daughter. Service is nice, people are kind and always open to help. Food is average, and it seems that the hotel would need a renovation..the room for kids is not very good, need some cleaning, new toys. At least that is what we expect from such an hotel.

Thank you very much for your review. We appreciated very much your kind words about our services and colleauges. It's true, we have to start the renovation of the hotel as soon as we can. We are applying to start the renovational works since one year at the owner of the hotel.
Partly we managed some works already, but we hope, until the end of the year, we can fulfill every expectations of our guests.

I have been there for several times, and always enjoyed my stay. Nice modern hotel, with perfect breakfast, very nice wellness, so I can really recommend for everybody, who is looking an accomodation in Sopron.

I spent two days in this hotel. It was 2 business days and I almost didn't go outside. Not bad hotel at all. Food was good and we have a lot of choice. If you are average tourist, you will not be disappointed.

2 years ago we were already in the hotel, we heard that there is a new management, so we went back at the end of March. The weather was very bad with snow and cold temperature, in our room was very cold, and there wasn't heating. We told it to the reception, they sent somebody who said we had to wait because the heating is in the wall. After 2 hours the room was still very cold, and then we got an answer, that the heating is not functionning, so we got an another room, which was bigger, it was a big suit. The room was perfect except the drapery, it was short, so we couldn't make dark in the room, which was not good in the morning. We told to the techniker, but he couldn't do anything. The bed-sheets were too short for the bed, the quarter of the bed was without bed-sheet.
The breakfast and the dinner was perfect, so we can say, that the new management did something, it was the first and most important thing to develope to them. Everything was delicious, a lot of dishes, the staff was very fast, they took the dirty plates very fast. Only bad thing was that the management sat down at the dining room and they spoke very loud about the reservation, they read the guests book very loud, so we heard a lot of things about the hotel operation. We didn't understand why couldn't they speak about these things in the office?
We chose a wellness packet, but the woman in the wellness reception said, that many things are still not available in the hotel, for example the hairdresser (there was 2 hairdressers program in the packet) or aerobic (it was also in the packet). So we couldn't get it. First she said that mayb she can give us something instead of these, but we didn't get anything. The wellness area is not so big, and there were more guests from outside (they were not hotel guests) then hotel guests. The new management has to develope the housekeeping, because it is not 4-stars-standard, they didn't clean the room well, and one day I asked the woman in the corridor when will they clean our rooms, she asked me if I really want it or not? So the management has to make attention to the housekeeping also, not only the restaurant.
But I have to talk about the perfect things: the massage what I got was very-very professional and perfect (the masseur was a young woman), she was very kind. And the bar is also perfect, the staff in the bar was also very friendly, and the cocktail was delicious!
Maybe we go back later, I hope for that time everything will be perfect!

Sorry for your unpleasent experiences, we work on it hard, to develeope even the technical backstage of the hotel, as the service level of our facilities and amenities too.
Concerning the management behaviour in the restaurant I am very sorry, we are much more discret already althought the time of the beginning. We take care much more attention do not disturb our guests with our enthusiastic. I hope, you will come again visiting us in a better weather circumsistances, and you will get time to time a better impacts about our services.

It is three years since my wife and I stayed at Hotel Fagus. Having read some of the recent reports about the hotel we wondered what to expect. There are one or two areas where service/facilities are not as good as previously. On TripAdvisor ratings I would rate it as ‘good’ (i.e. Between ‘average’ and ‘very good’) if it were possible. So my overall rating will be 4 out of 5 as I am of a generous nature.

The buffet breakfast and dinner was better than three years ago, a good choice was always available. The chefs (and some mornings senior management) were scrutinising the buffet to ensure replenishments were made. In the evening there is a good wine list. A small bar near the restaurant was available and we generally found it quiet, although a television was always on in the background.

The staff are overall very friendly and helpful. We were always served well in the restaurant, café and bar. The front desk staff were always polite and attentive. One point for English speaking visitors is that the standard of English is not wonderful but this is often true in Hungary. Room cleaning was good but haphazard and sometimes there was a shortage of clean towels and toilet rolls though this was resolved quickly.

However updates to the hotel are obviously “work in progress”. Some of the gym equipment is damaged or needs major maintenance. It would not support a serious work out. The alternative is the pool which is small but ok. Be aware it can get very crowded at the weekend. The garden and grounds have become run down and some extensive weeding and tidying is required. Though the rooms have nice balconies, the chairs are rather uncomfortable and you can’t sit out in the sun for long.

There is a gym, squash court, small pool, spa, hairdresser and even a dentist if required. The hotel is ideally situated near extensive woods for walks and running. This is a good base for a vacation in the area.
