“Great value for money”
Reviewed 30 August 2014

I stayed here on two separate occasions with my Fiancé over a period of 10 day. The first room was an upgraded comfort room and was very spacious and well equipped, it was nice to see a kettle and tea making facilities. Always a nice touch to see this when you are English! The staff were always helpful throughout both our stays and the desk is always occupied.

Our second room for the last night of our trip however was a lot more disappointing. The room itself, even though it was just a standard, was in my opinion much better than the upgraded comfort room and for 45 euros it seemed to be a bargain...until we tried to sleep. As we were on the landing below the comfort level rooms, we were open to all the noise from outside and also the shopping mall from below, it was one of the worst nights sleep I have had ever. Which is such a shame because the room, the staff and the hotel is actually really very good.

I would recommend the upgrade to the comfort room, it will be more than worth it. The hotel itself couldn't be more centrally located and for that the price does not reflect which is nice. Two other downsides is that there is no lift and also they only take cash.

Room Tip: Always upgrade to the comfort room.

We booked this hotel the night before. We felt like it was a great deal after the price we paid in other cities for European hotel chains. The hotel is in an old building in the old town, so you will walk up multiple flights of stairs carrying your luggage, this might be problem for some people. The hotel only took cash, and I didn't have enough Euros, but there was an exchange booth just down the road. Once you walk out the door you are in the heart of the old town and you can walk anywhere you want or take one of the little motorized tours or wander out even farther. This hotel should be ranked higher, but some of the reviews we read cam from people who didn't know what to expect and were shocked when they arrived.

I experienced a theft by an employee for which I have proof. As a result I also experienced a totally incompetent manager who provided no assistance, only defensive reasons that the theft did not happen. I don’t believe this review should go into the details, but let me know if you would care to have a copy of the police report.

Other than having to climb four (4) high European floors without a lift to reach the reception lobby the hotel is located in the best location in Old Town Bratislava. The entire staff that worked the front desk spoke English, were friendly and very helpful from providing directions to nearby dining recommendations. It is a first rate front desk staff.

However, the management does not contribute to guest’s safety and especially comfort. The manager has nickel and dimed anything to do with guest comfort or convenience to save pennies. The following are per his direction: The light at the reception is not allowed to be on so you don’t know if staff is on duty unless you came up to the counter, the display cooler with drinks from wine to water is turned off during the day to save money. What he doesn’t realize is when turned on it cost him five times as much to bring the temperature up to cool the drinks. Even though my booking said the hotel accepted credit cards, so the manager would not have to pay bankcard fees myself and another guest on two different dates were told the card machine didn’t work and we had to go to an ATM when checking out.

The two rooms I was in were very noisy throughout the night because of the numerous cafes and bars at street level. I do not recommend staying at the Old City Hotel regardless of the cost unless the owner's replace the manager.

Room Tip: If you like walking up four (4) floors with no lift to the reception area this hotel is for you. Al...

In the room there is no closet, the bathroom door can not be closed, because the door is higher than the frame and the front door are improperly cut and there is hole. In the bathroom there is no hairdryer!

Stayed at the hotel for 4 nights early April 2014. To note is that the hotel is located on the top floors of the building without a lift so if you have problems taking the stairs with your luggage this is not your hotel.
For location the hotel is situated slab in the middle of the old town. The two people at the reception were both nice and helpful the few times I needed something.

The room (no 4) was ensuite, spacious, clean and had a nice decor. The room showed signs of wear and tear, but nothing too bad. The bathroom was okay, shower a bit small, but clean and enough for the few days of stay. The wifi worked great, even able to stream tv-shows.

Only point that I really disliked was that the room door was crooked so that some light and a lot of noise from the corridor came to the room. There was noise coming in from the streets especially on the Fri and Sat night, but nothing too noisy.

All in all I would recommend the hotel to anyone looking for a budget place to stay in Bratislava.

Just returned back from a 3 night trip stopping at the old city hotel. We had two rooms both with ensuite. The hotel is on the top floors of a 3 or maybe 4 story building. Our rooms were through a spiral staircase in the converted loft and it was just our two rooms on this floor which was great. The rooms were tidy and spacious and had a decent bathroom with shower. Tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms with clean towels. The location of the rooms are great you step out of the hotel onto a pedestrianised street in the heart of the old town. You couldn't ask for better. There are plenty of bars and shops around and you won't go thirsty or hungry. The drinks in the bars are cheap. We paid around 1.50euro a pint if Zlaty/pilsner etc. for a group going for nightlife we went to Alize which was decent and also Channells. Both busy with good music. Sat night was very busy, Sunday and Monday much quieter.

I would recommend visiting around Christmas time when the Xmas market is there. This is set up in the main square around 100 yards from the hotel. Lots of stalls selling cheap food and mulled wines.

Overall a good hotel, great value for money and fantastic location. Ignore the reviews about the stairs, yes there's a few flights to climb but who cares, noisy around the town on weekend nights yes but why capital city isn't!

i rate this 5 stars ONLY if you take the comfort room.
for the other slightly cheaper rooms i would rate it less.

now we are in the comfort room after the last 2 nights in the cheaper rooms. its way better, bigger with separate lounge area, no noise can be heard from here.
but the last 2 nights we were in another room 1 floor down, theres music from the bar below until 5am with music and people and it is so hot inside that if you want to open the window, you can't because the noise is too much.

i would def def pay for comfort room! its so nice, location is best , you can't do any better and for the price, i would definitely recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: room 6 is very nice and no noise can be heard
