Heyduková the street may look a little run-down but to me that adds to the charm. The building itself is quite old, the front door is very sturdy and heavy and the security is excellent given that you need and are given no fewer than 4 keys to unlock 4 doors between the street and your apartment.

It certainly isn't in a bad area and is an ideal location being on the edge of the old town and not too far from the railway station. It is also only 5 minutes from Tescos which is actually quite useful when you consider that the accommodation not only includes a bedroom and en-suite shower room but also a small fitted kitchen with 2 hot plates, an ample fridge-freezer and a microwave oven. There is also cutlery, crockery and a few glasses. The accommodation is spotlessly clean, tastefully appointed with a shared balcony looking onto a private courtyard.

There is also a desktop fan which is essential given the summer heat in Bratislava where the average maximum July temperature is around 27C - the same as the French Mediterranean.

My wife and I agreed that we would likely return to Bratislava in the future and would probably look to stay here again if we did. The owners Martin and Tatiana were helpful, friendly and spoke good English. Arranging our transfers to and from the airport with them at reasonable rates ensured that the start and finish of our stay as well as the duration were hassle-free.

Room Tip: Arrange your transfers with the owners. Lugging cases on trams/buses is no fun and taxis can be ludi...

This was pretty a much like a nice hostel in a terrible looking building. When we first arrived there we were getting worried that it was a dump.. that is the impression you will get once you walk down the road and enter the building.. however everyone was quite surprised how nice it was inside.

The way the apartment is set up is a bit strange because there is no reception. I suppose it is what it says on the tin, an apartment/flat. I was hoping we'd get tips and advice from a reception about the area and where to go but had to do all the research myself on my phone. The owners live somewhere further away so you'd have to wait for them to come and see you if you need anything. We had to wait a few minuted before we were greeted by I think the owner? He gave us two keys and then we left as the check in is at 1pm and check out annoyingly is at 11am.

One word of advice though, this is not a place for a lads holiday. I mistook Bratislava for a Prague and we struggled to find anywhere or anyone out after 10pm in the city. It is a place that you can maybe enjoy for 2 nights max.. even then you'd struggle for things to do. So if you are planning a stag or just a city break away with friends then I'd suggest Prague as the much much better place.

Back to the hotel, it was reasonably clean and the sleep was comfy.. very quiet area so no problems sleeping. There were 1 massive bed, 1 double, 2 singles and a sofa bed so plenty of room. A kitchen, sitting room and a toilet. That pretty much sums it up. You are basically renting a room from someone more than it being a hotel or even a hostel.

The area itself is very very quiet like i said earlier although we did go on a Monday to Wednesday in January but still did not think it would be so dead. There were literally only 8 people max on one of the nights on the streets. It seemed to get busier by Wednesday night so I am assuming weekends would be ok. There aren't that many night clubs but there are drinking bars. There is one just next to the apartment as well, which is decent but the smoking in there can be a problem if you hate the smell. Smoking is allowed indoors in Bratislava.

The hotel is around 10/20 minutes depending on traffic. I would suggest to book it with the owner as it is cheaper than getting a cab from the airport.. it costs us 18 euros through him but 28 euros through an airport cab.

The sleep quality was good, there were enough beds for all 4 of us but i actually quite enjoyed sleeping on the sofa which was comfy and big. There isn't much noise so that's a good thing and it isn't cold in the apartment and that is a bonus.

So.. to conclude.. go to Prague instead! But as for the review in hand, the apartment is recommended for couples, lads holiday or a family and it obviously works out cheaper than a hotel because you can cook your own food. As people normally say, a home away from home... just a shame the place was dead in general.

It is very convenient to have a little kitchen, a place to eat and much space, rather an a simple room in a hotel. This apartment is outside the historical old town but very close to it. A 5 mn walk and you are in the heart of the old city. No need to use public transportations.
The road and the outside of the building are really sad looking. So is also the entrance of the building. But once you are inside, your feel very lucky to discover your very nice and space full apartment. The 3.5 meters high ceiling and the thick heavy walls remembers you that you are in an old building. We had absolutely no noise from neither the road nor the neighbors. It was very quiet.

Having just got back from a Central European trip, I was not surprised to see the mixed reactions for the apartments.

My friend and I thought they were great - much, much roomier than hotel rooms would have been, very cheap relative to hotel options and (this is where opinions no doubt vary), they have a lot of genuine shabby charm, forming part of old apartment blocks amidst a part of old town that is definitely not the heart of polished tourism.

We really liked it - for travellers on a budget I would recommend this unhesitatingly - for others, will depend on your tolerance for having a slightly less polished environment.

If you stay, check out the Slovak pub - good food and beer in a traditional-if-twee environment. Good value too.

Oh and a quick word for the (I presume) husband and wife who run the apartments - unfailingly helpful and very easy to deal with.

Stayed here for 5 days with a group of friends. Greeted at the Airport by the owner Martin who was very friendly - also arranged for him to take us back (worked out at 5 euros each in total). The rooms we were in slept four - they were clean, warm, and comfortable and had everything we needed. Although not in the old town as such it was just a two minute walk away - ideal really, as set in a quiet side street but just 100 metres from lots of shops, restaurants, pubs etc. Would definately use again. Check out the Storm Bar - just a couple of doors away - mainly used by students but very laid back with cheap drinks - even by Bratislava prices (in there every night for a nightcap).
